A Basket of Love

So yesterday I attended the celebration of life for Cindy's father.

But not until last night did I realize the family was paying for the arrangements through GoFundMe.

And just to show what a lovely person Cindy is, Cindy donated towards Rebekah's GoFundMe on Saturday night.

Cindy's father was already quite ill when she joined our family on July 15, the birthday celebration for Riley and me, since we share the same birthday and a middle name. But she said she wouldn't miss our gathering for the world (and she did need a break, too, she said).

She also brought me a lovely basket filled with lovely gifts.

She brought me beautiful card with an even more beautiful message handwritten inside.

She brought me beautiful bath sponges in my favorite water colors.

She brought me ocean breeze soy candle in lovely watery colors.

Now, I'm not sure what item paired with the Vietnam tag. But Cindy is Vietnamese, so I tucked the tag inside the card.

She brought me coffee mug that reflects our relationship and my love for the moon.

She brought me sharpies in vivid colors, the perfect gift for writers who love colors.

She brought me another special notebook to go on the shelf with the other special notebooks that are too special to mark up.

And she tucked all these items among blue tissue paper and ribbon. And now I also have a sturdy attractive basket to put stuff in. (Oh, yes, I'm keeping it all)

But the greatest gift doesn't come in a basket. The greatest gift is the love that inspired the basket.

Again Cindy donated to Rebekah's new cause while her family is asking for donations to pay for a funeral.

The loss of Rebekah's transportation when she cannot replace it is huge and will impact Rebekah in many ways. So it's not minor, even when comparing to the loss of a father.

But the point is that, even in Cindy's own worry about her father, she wanted to show her love with her presence and gifts, a true manifestation of the "time, treasure, and talents."

And then, even in Cindy's own grief about her father, she wanted to to show her love to Rebekah but helping her out, too.

I think that shows a person's character, and heart, don't you?

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, July 22 to July 28

Good morning!

Today I have eleven features and news stories to share with you today with more stories coming today and over the weekend. So be sure to check back on The Herald-News site: shawlocal.com/the-herald-news.

Bertrand the Mouse is hosting a Back to School Birthday Bash on Aug. 19 at The Book Market in Crest Hill and YOU are invited (in person if you live the in general area).

The birthday bash will be from noon to 4 p.m. at 2365 Plainfield Road in Crest Hill. Santa will be serving FREE ice cream from 1 to 3 p.m.

The only gifts Bertrand wants is more books for Santa. Last year and early this year, the BryonySeries donated 234 Bertrand the Mouse books to Santa and his friend the Easter bunny.

Both characters (and the same person) distributed those books to children and special needs adults. We are planning to donate more books this holiday season. Bertrand was a huge hit, and we'd like to increase the amount of books we are able to give. This is where you come in.

We'll be selling Bertrand books for just $5 each at his birthday party if you'd like to donate a Bertrand book (or two) and give it to Santa personally.

And if you don't - well, you're still on his "nice" list, and you can still get free ice cream (while the ice cream lasts). Bertrand will want to see you either way (so will his Uncle Barty). And, of course, we will sing "Happy Birthday" to the little crocheted guy, too.

You don't live in the area (or can't attend) but still want to help out? More details to follow in Tuesday's blog.

WriteOn Joliet will return to the digital media center at the downtown branch of the Joliet Public Library next week to (hopefully) finish editing the radio play we presented at the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park Theatre in Joliet on April 22. Hurray!

Also, if you missed that radio play the first time, you will have another opportunity at 10 a.m. Sept. 9 at the downtown branch of the Joliet Public Library. More on this later.

Here is a quick recap of BryonySeries projects in progress:

House on Top of the Hill: Third book in the BryonySeries Limbo trilogy. I now have a good working draft of the entire book and two chapters that are ready for final edits.

Cornell Dyer and the Howls of Basketville: The next book in The Adventures of Cornell Dyer subseries is finally in production. We can't wait to release it into the hands of readers. Timothy said the next book will be slightly dark (because it's for kids, too) and will involve an old toy store. I cannot wait for our next "Cornell" breakfast.

You can find other titles in the series here. Timothy has not yet added our latest titles to the BryonySeries bookstore. But all titles are also on Amazon

Karla Joins In: The fourth book in The Girls of the BryonySeries series. Nine of the twelve chapters are completed. and ready for their final edits; four more to go. Jennifer Wainright iw working the cover.

Jennifer designed the covers for Julie and the Too-Hard Homework, Katie and the Big Fear, and Summer Sisters, as well as frontispiece for Lycanthropic Summer. I can't wait to see her "Karla" illustration.

BryonySeries reference/guide bookWelcome to Munsonville: the People, Places, and Things of the BryonySeries. I'd love to have this one ready by the end of the year. Pecking slowly at it.

A Year of Shadows and Moonlight, of Gathering Blooms in the Woods: A rather unusual, poetic novella in the second person. Half of it is written and edited and another half is loosely written. Rebekah is also playing around with art for the cover.

Rebekah is also slowly updating the BryonySeries YouTube and Pinterest accounts. And she' catching up with Kindles for some of the BryonySeries books. So do watch for those.

Now back to the stories. Simply click on the link of the story that looks interesting to you. Happy scrolling!

But before the stories, I have a list of additional resources and information. Please check them out, too.

Finally, if you'd like to find more kindness in your life, consider this book.

And have a great Friday!

BryonySeries Birthday Cake 2023

Every year for the past few years, Jasmine has made a BryonySeries-themed birthday cake for my birthday as her gift to me.

This year's cake featured purple "roses" and edible gold leaf, elegant enough for Henry, wouldn't you agree?

Sue's Diner: Vanilla Ice Cream

Who doesn't love ice cream, especially when temperatures are soaring in the Midwest!

This week's recipe, homemade vanilla ice cream, is authentically Victorian complete with a hint of vagueness in its yield - so we made a reasonable estimate.

This ice cream recipe is featured in the BryonySeries cookbook: Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles from "Bryony," which is a permanent fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties.

It's also adapted from Miss Beecher’s domestic receiptbook: designed as a supplement to her Treatise on domestic economy.

This recipe is referenced in the BryonySeries novel BryonyHere is the explanation from the cookbook:

Ice cream was John Simons’ one culinary weakness. Each lunch at Simons Mansion ended with a dish of it.

You can try the vanilla ice cream recipe on the Sue's Diner page on the BryonySeries website

But try the recipe this week. It will be gone some time next week. A new recipe will take it's place.

If you have any troubleshooting questions or comments, email us at bryonyseries@gmail.com.

By the way, Sue's Diner is only real in the BryonySeries world. But didn't Timothy do a great job making the page look like a real menu at a vintage diner?

Here is the full diner page: bryonyseries.com/sue-s-diner. You can't really order, of course (wouldn't it be great if you could?).

Goodbye, Theodora

About a month ago, Daniel brought his Teddy Bear hamster, Theodora, up to my office So I could help him clean her eyes.

They were all "gunky" and that never happened with her.

So I swabbed the little eyes with a moistened cotton swab until she could open then. And right after work the next day, Daniel drove her to an animal hospital that saw exotics.

The drive should have taken about forty minutes. But it was now rush hour. The animal hospital was also first-come, first-serve and not by appointment.

He waited a couple of hours and was told to come back the next day. So while he was still on the road, I started calling for other options.

It turned out Plainfield Animal Hospital DID see exotics (we didn't know that), but only on days when a special veterinarian was onsite. And today was the day!

Unfortunately, the exotic veterinarian was leaving in twenty minutes. Could Daniel get there on time?

I called Daniel. He thought thirty was more reasonable.

So I called Plainfield Animal Hospital again. And I was told they could make thirty minutes work.

Daniel arrived forty minutes later... and found the veterinarian had waited for him.

The veterinarian had good news.

All of Theodora's vitals were excellent. So the veterinarian prescribed an antibiotic just in case. She said Theodora might need blood work to rule out kidney failure (apparently common in hamsters) if Theodora did not improve.

Daniel took Theodora home, gave her the first dose, and rewarded her with a sliver of broccoli.

However, Theodora did not improve.

Nor she did not get worse...at first.

She handled the antibiotic well. The discharge in her eyes lessened.

But then she started to swell.

Daniel thought maybe she gained weight because some of her activity had lessened. He had brought her home at five months, and she was now two years old. That's pretty old for a hamster, actually.

If you think about it, she's enjoyed not one, but two Christmases with us.

Theodora finished the antibiotic. The next day, the discharge in her eyes returned. at full force.

So Daniel took her back to the first animal hospital early in the day and waited to be seen. That veterinarian also had good news for us.

Theodora's vitals were still great. So the veterinarian prescribed another antibiotic and agreed she should have tests to rule out kidney failure if this antibiotic didn't fix the problem.

And it didn't.

But the swelling went away.

In the meantime, Theodora still loved her broccoli. She still did hamster things.

But she did them more slowly, less often.

Theodora also neglected her grooming.

On Saturday, Daniel and Rebekah took Theodora to a different animal hospital, one that specialized in hamsters. This drive was an hour away.

Theodora was sedated for blood and urine tests and some imaging.

The diagnosis? A urinary tract infection.

So she was hospitalized for forty-eight hours with supplemental oxygen and IV antibiotics. The positive news was that her vitals were still good, and she was not septic, amazing considering the stubbornness of the infection.

The plan was this. If she improved, Daniel would pick her up after work on Monday and take her home.

However, if Theodora did not improve, well, it was time for a different conversation.

Rebekah asked what I thought.

Well, I thought the fact Theodora had good vitals and wasn't septic were good signs.

However, the fact she had a UTI that two antibiotics designed to combat UTIs didn't cure was very worrisome.

So I was fifty-fifty.

But we were in luck again. On Sunday the animal hospital called to say Theodora had improved slightly.

Hurray! It felt just like Christmas!

The holiday feeling was short-lived.

Early on Monday morning, the animal hospital called Daniel again. Theodora had passed during the night.

The results of her imaging had also returned. Theodora actually had a tumor in one of her kidneys, most like the cause of all her trouble.

Daniel made cremation arrangements through that hospital and had a paw print made. Theodora will come home to us in two weeks in a much different form than when she left just three days ago.

We are heartbroken.

And we are heartbroken not just because we have, in less than a year, acquired quite a bit of urns in our house.

Frances.

My father.

Ron.

And now Theodora.

Not to mention we had another death in the family just a couple of weeks ago.

And let's not forget Faith is still on palliative care with small cell lymphoma.

I mean, those are all good reasons to be heartbroken.

But we are now also heartbroken because this tiny creature, who pitter-pattered her teeny feet into our home and into our hearts, is now gone.

And her passing has left a hole bigger than the wall-to-wall contraption in Daniel's room where she lived.

I'm sure Theodora's soul has scampered away to the place where all good hamster souls go.

But I hope, as she forever eats through fields of broccoli unconfined by rolling hamster balls, she pauses from time to time and remembers the human family that loved her to the end.

New Beginnings

"Ugh," is often the first reaction to Monday morning from many of us.

And yet, are Mondays really any harder than the other six days? Is something terrible more likely to befall us on Monday than Tuesday through Sunday?

Probably not.

Now Mondays may be more hectic at work (they often are for me). But they are not horrible, just busy.

Still, I've had weekends that are busier.

What if we adjusted our perception to "new beginnings," a stretch of fresh opportunities for...for...for  whatever our goals are?

Remember when reaching for the skies seemed possible?

Maybe it is, starting on Monday.

Just a thought.

Happy Monday!

Sue's Diner: Ricotta Cheesecake

This week's recipe for is for a ricotta cheesecake, which Rebekah prepared for my sixty-second birthday.

I've loved cheesecake since I was very young, and this version by Rebekah is my absolute favorite cheesecake in the world.

If you've never tried cheesecake made with ricotta, here's your chance to make it at home. It's less sweet and sweet, dryer and more firm, yet still very rich and with (I think) a more satisfying texture and taste.

Try this recipe on the Sue's Diner page on the BryonySeries website.

But try the recipe this week. It will be gone some time next week. A new recipe will take it's place.

A Lovely, Thoughtful Birthday Gift

I wanted to share the gift Rebekah gave me for my birthday because it's a wonderful example of how our family approaches gift giving: a bit homemade, highly tailored to the recipient, and always a wonderful surprise.

Rebekah started with a wooden box from the dollar store that she colored with markers.

And then she filled it with two pieces of BryonySeries themed jewelry. If you've read any books of the series, no explanation is needed.

If you haven't, you can still admire the pieces and the effort Rebekah spent in finding the right ones.

The gifts are as much a reflection of my interests as they are of the type of person Rebekah is: thoughtful, loving, giving, and altogether lovely.

A Whirlwind of a Wonderful Birthday

Good morning!

How could three days pass so quickly?

From Friday through Sunday evening, from start to finish, the three days were filled with activity with family and much, much love: for me, for Riley, and for Ron (and one small surprise party for WriteOn Joliet member Holly Coop).

We shopped, ate, swam, wrapped and unwrapped, gathered, and hugged.

And most importantly, I shared turning sixty-two with a granddaughter who shares a middle name with me and turned seven on the same day

Over the course of a few blogs, I'll share some of those most inspiring moments so you can be blessed, too.

Have a wonderful start to your week!
