Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Nov. 6 through Nov. 12

Good morning!

I have twenty-two features stories to share with you today and few more that will be posted over the weekend, so do watch for them.

Speaking of stories, I've had a bit of change in work duties this past week.

Four years ago, I was asked to write a weekly events newsletter for The Herald-News. Most likely unbeknownst to area libraries )unless they subscribed to this newsletter), I dedicated one newsletter each month to highlight upcoming free events at all libraries in Will County - one event per library.

And because I was receiving so many requests for feature stories from local authors (while Herald-News print space was simulaneously shrinking), I pitched a second newsletter so I could share short stories from authors and review their books.

That newsletter was called LocalLit, and I was especially proud of this newsletter. I felt it was a unique offering, especially for a daily community newspaper.

For me, it was also a wonderful opportunity to read one book each week from a local author I may not have otherwise read - and to share my thoughts about the book with readers in terms of, not just what I thought about it, but also the type of reader who might enjoy reading it.

A few days ago, I was asked to let both newsletters go in favor or writing more features stories, especially since I am known for in-depth, longform stories about people in the community.

So will I still read books by local authors? Of course.

In fact, I can finally tackle a very long series by this local author I've always wanted to read. I'm halfway through the first book and probably have thirty or more to go.

For all of you who subscribed to the newsletters, especially LocalLit, which was more robust in subscribers than I ever imagined it would/could be, thank you.

May you continue to seek out and read books by local authors, not because they're locally written, but to discover some really terrific stories that often get unnoticed.

And for those of you who subscribed to the Will County Go Guide (later named in 2020: the Will County Inside/Outside Guide), please continue to patronize your local library.

Now for a recap/update on my BryonySeries projects:

I am currently re-reading my scribbled first draft for Call of the Siren (the second book in the BryonySeries Limbo trilogy) and starting to color in the lines. I'm anticipating a late spring publication date, but progress is slow, so we shall see.

Barring the unforeseen, we do plan to publish the book in 2022.

Sue Midlock has completed the art for Cornell Dyer and the "Mistical Being" (cover looks great, by the way) and I'm hoping she can begin art soon for Cornell Dyer and the Calcium Deficient Bones.

Timothy has also scheduled (and canceled) a couple of "Cornell" breakfasts to start working on the next book, a Sherlock Holmes parody (the main character is Sherman Homes) as life has gotten in the way for us. But we will get to it soon.

Sarah also had a crazy dream that sounded perfect for An Adventure of Cornell Dyer mystery. But she wants time to draw some sketches, a map, and write the "rules." It's called Cornell Dyer and the House of Broken Portals.

Bertrand the Mouse has returned, and you can read about it herehere, and here

Jennifer Wainright (frontispiece artist for Lycanthropic Summer) has completed two portraits for  "Girls of the BryonySeries" series for tween girls and is currently working on a third. The portraits are beautiful and it shows that artist Jennifer Wainright can draw anything from werewolves to portraits!

I current have one book in the series completed, and I am working on the second, which I'll revisit this weekend when I'm off work. The goal is to have three of the eight done before I release any of them.

Now back to the twenty-two stories. Simply click on the link of the story that looks interesting to you. Happy scrolling!

But before the stories, I have a list of additional resources and information. Please check them out, too -

Finally, if you'd like to find more kindness in your life, consider this book.

And have a great Friday!

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Oct. 9 through Oct. 15

Good morning!

I have seventeen news and features stories to share with you today and more that will be posted over the weekend (I'm working tomorrow and Sunday) so do watch for them.

I finished Cornell Dyer and the Calcium Deficient Bones on Tuesday. I'm just waiting for Sue to complete the art for Cornell Dyer and the "Mistical Being," and then I can chat with her about art for this book.

Timothy has also scheduled (and canceled) a couple of "Cornell" breakfasts to start working on the next book, a Sherlock Holmes parody (the main character is Sherman Homes) as life has gotten in the way for us. But - soon!

Sarah also had a crazy dream that sounded perfect for An Adventure of Cornell Dyer mystery. But she wants time to draw some sketches, a map, and write the "rules." It's called Cornell Dyer and the House of Broken Portals.

On Sunday night, I start my second and final at-home writing retreat of 2021. On this retreat, I will be finishing the second half of my working draft for  Call of the Siren (the second book in the Limbo series), working at a rate of two chapters per day.

If my brain gets tired, I'll revist the first half of the draft and work on parts that need a granular, up-close type of focus. I currently have no timetable for getting this book done because this is where the quality of the writing counts. For now, I'm targeting a mid-spring release. We shall see!

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Oct. 2 through Oct. 8

 Good morning!

I'm a little tired this morning, but I couldn't miss jumping onto the #5amwritersclub Zoom call at 4 a.m. (The group is EST and I'm CST) for a great conversation on the craft of the horror genre.

But I'm down to the last two doses of the antibiotics and crossing my fingers the issue will continue resolving itself (it's moving in the right direction).

And I have twenty stories to share with you today and a few not yet posted, so do watch for them over the weekend.

On the fiction front:

I have just a small portion of Cornell Dyer and the Calcium Deficient Bones to complete. In fact, Timothy has scheduled a "Cornell" breakfast for early tomorrow morning to start working on the next book, a Sherlock Holmes parody (the main character is Sherman Homes).

I'll reconnect with Call of the Siren (the second book in the Limbo series) tonight by reading through my previous work since I'm now working, in a very close and granular way, on all the areas I've sectioned off for focused writing during my first at-home writing retreat of 2021. I have no timetable for getting this done because this is where the quality of the writing counts.

The second retreat is tentatively scheduled to begin one week from Monday. The goal is to complete a hefty first draft of the remaining chapters.

Sue Midlock, artist for The Adventures of Cornell Dyer is nearly down with the art for Cornell Dyer and the "Mistical" Being, co-written by Rebekah, who has recovered very nicely from surgery), so I'm eager to pass along the art ideas for  Cornell Dyer and the Calcium-Deficient Bones (co-written by Timothy).

However, Sue is still experiencing some issues from her surgery in June, so the art is coming along slowly. Please keep the good thoughts/prayers coming for Sue.

Timothy is currently outlining another Cornell Dyer story. This one is another parody and features a character named Sherman Homes.

Jennifer Wainright (frontispiece artist for Lycanthropic Summer) has completed two portraits for  "Girls of the BryonySeries" series for tween girls. It's beautiful and it shows that artist Jennifer Wainright can draw anything from werewolves to portraits!

She was working on art for the third book (I have eight planned in all and two in progress). Jennifer is also recovering from a motorcyle accident, so please send up good thoughts for her, too!

Now back to the twenty stories. Simply click on the link of the story that looks interesting to you. Happy scrolling!

But before the stories, I have a list of additional resources and information. Please check them out, too -

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Sept. 25 through Oct. 1

Good morning!

Despite a trip to the ER late Friday night, a second trip on Wednesday night, an appointment with a specialist on Thursday, and feeling a bit under the weather all week, I have eighteen stories to share with you today and a few not yet posted, so watch for them over the weekend.

Now my exercise workout has been a bit compromised, and I've accomplished very little fiction since my first at-home writing retreat of 2021 a couple weeks ago - although I (almost) wrapped up Cornell Dyer and the Calcium Deficient Bones last weekend (but it didn't need much).

So here are my weekend plans:

I'll reconnect with Call of the Siren (the second book in the Limbo series) tonight by reading through my previous work. And then I'll start working, in a very up close and granular way, on all the areas I've sectioned off. I have no timetable for getting this done because this is where the quality of the writing counts.

Jennifer Wainright (frontispiece artist for Lycanthropic Summer) has completed two portraits for  "Girls of the BryonySeries" series for tween girls. It's beautiful and it shows that artist Jennifer Wainright can draw anything from werewolves to portraits!

She was working on art for the third book (I have eight planned in all and two in progress). Jennifer is also recovering from a motorcyle accident, so please send up good thoughts for her, too!

Now back to the eighteen stories. Simply click on the link of the story that looks interesting to you. Happy scrolling!

But before the stories, I have a list of additional resources and information. Please check them out, too -

Finally, if you'd like to find more kindness in your life, consider this book.

And have a great Friday!

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Sept. 4 through Sept. 10

Good morning!

I have sixteen stories to share with you today and quite a few not yet posted, so watch for them over the long weekend.

Quite a bit has changed on the fiction front, so here is a quick recap.

First of all, I am working straight through the weekend, and I am excited and honored since it is the twentieth anniversary of 9/11 tomorrow. I've also been working on a big piece that will run tomorrow, too, and I'm thankful I was asked to write it.

And then, after I clock out from work on Sunday, an intense week of "other" writing will begin.

Thanks to COVID (again), I did not make it down to Raleigh (again) this summer to see Sarah. So I am using some of my vacation time to take two at-home writing retreats. The first one starts on Monday - barring any emergencies, for it's been a year of them, it seems.

The goal is to write a good working draft of half of Call of the Siren (the second book in the Limbo trilogy) during this retreat and then write a good working draft of the second half.

Please send lots of good thoughts because this is not as fun as it sounds.

We have another book in The Adventures of Cornell Dyer series to share (Cornell Dyer and the "Mistical" Being, co-written by Rebekah, who also needs surgery now). Our artist Sue Midlock is nearly done with the chapter heading illustrations.

Sue is recovering nicely now from that surgery but may have another issue, ugh! So please keep the good thoughts coming.

I finished most of  Cornell Dyer and the Calcium-Deficient Bones over Labor Day weekend. So when Sue is done with the art for "Mistical Being," we will send her the next round of ideas.

Timothy is currently outlining another Cornell Dyer story. This one is another parody and features a character named Sherman Homes.

A few weeks back, Sarah had a crazy dream that sounded perfect for An Adventure of Cornell Dyer mystery. But she wants time to draw some sketches, a map, and write the "rules." It's called Cornell Dyer and the House of Broken Portals.

Bertrand the Mouse has returned, and you can read about it herehere, and here

I also have in my possession the first piece of completed cover art for the "Girls of the BryonySeries" series for tween girls. It's beautiful and it shows that artist Jennifer Wainright can draw anything from werewolves to portraits! She was working on art for the next two books (I have eight planned in all) - until she was in a bad motorcycle accident. Please send up good thoughts for her, too!

I have one "Girls of the BryonySeries" book ready for editing, a second in progress, and some really skeletal outlines for the rest. So I'm not lacking in projects, just time - but I have three days this weekend and intend to make good use of them.

Now back to the sixteen stories. Simply click on the link of the story that looks interesting to you. Happy scrolling!

But before the stories, I have a list of additional resources and information. Please check them out, too -

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Aug. 28 through Sept. 3

Good morning!

I havetwenty-three stories to share with you today and quite a few not yet posted, so watch for them over the long weekend.

Quiet a bit has changed on the fiction front, so here is a quick recap.

We have another book in The Adventures of Cornell Dyer series to share (Cornell Dyer and the "Mistical" Being, co-written by Rebekah, who also needs surgery now). Our artist Sue Midlock is currently working on the chapter heading illustrations. Timothy saw her last night and said the drawings are about halfway done.

Sue is recovering nicely now from that surgery but may have another issue, ugh! So please keep the good thoughts coming.

Timothy and I had outlined Cornell Dyer and the Calcium-Deficient Bones and I hope to complete the first draft this weekend. We have another breakfast scheduled for tomorrow - hopefully - to work on another Cornell Dyer story.

I created quite a few character outlines for all the new characters (and returning minor characters who now have secondary or major role) in the second book of the Limbo trilogy: Call of the Siren. I've written the first and last line for every chapter and become more granular on the outlines.

Since I'm not going to Raleigh this year AGAIN (I'm so bummed), I'm planning two at-home writing retreats with my vacation time and want to make good use of that time as we'd like to release the book in 2022. The first writing retreat is the week Rebekah has surgery.

The writing retreat starts on an odd day off, then I work four days through the weekend and then I will be off. I have my writing homework outlined and ready for me to get started.

Now back to the twenty-three stories. Simply click on the link of the story that looks interesting to you. Happy scrolling!

But before the stories, I have a list of additional resources and information. Please check them out, too -

Finally, if you'd like to find more kindness in your life, consider this book.
