A Harvest of Words

A quick internet search of the topic "crafts from old books" will pull up hundreds of ideas, for crafty people eager to repurpose old books to create something new...like this pumpkin below.

The activities director at The Timbers of Shorewood made these for the WriteOn Joliet members who participated in the third "Meet the Author" event in November.

The "Meet the Author" event has become a yearly opportunity for The Timbers book club to enjoy the prose and poetry by WriteOn Joliet authors and for the authors to enjoy reading to a rapt audience from anthologies that are donated to the club that evening.

The Timbers also hosted WriteOn Joliet in 2022 and 2023.

To make these pumpkins, The Timbers' activities director took on of WriteOn's anthology that had become coffee-stained from many readings at The Timbers.

Its stem was fashioned from the anthology cover.

And (in my pumpkin), the flesh was formed from words I'd written, from excerpts from BryonySeries novels that I'd shared for this particular anthology.

I found it intriguing that words that began in our imaginations eventually found their way onto pages through many hours of work, which then found their way into the hands of readers for many hours of reading, where one reader also then spent hours reforming them into another form of artistic expression, which then returned to the authors to enjoy.

For me, this shows the malleableness of art and its ability to be explored, reshaped, and enjoyed in many forms.

Maybe it's something to consider as we make our unique way in the world today.

Happy Monday!

Visit the WriteOn Joliet Booth at Kidz Fest on Saturday

Can you believe it's August already? And it's a packed month in my world: work, events, doctors appointments, family birthdays, family funeral on Friday, meeting a new grandson...and debating if I should use some of my vacation days in August or wait until September.

Hmmm...

We will kick off the festivities this Saturday when WriteOn Joliet participates in Kidz Fest for the first time this year - and we are excited!

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Will County Lot, 302 N. Chicago St. in Joliet.

Activities include magic shows, face painting, pony rides, petting zoo, roller skating, inflatable slide, and vendors, including WriteOn Joliet.

And if you come out, please by the WriteOn Joliet booth where we are all about the words!

1. We will give way approximately 80 locally authored books for children and adults.

2. We will have 140 FREE bookmarks to color on site or at home.

3. We will distribute special subscription offers to The Herald-News in Joliet.

4. We will also have word finds and crossword puzzles based on some of the books.

But the main event is... (yes, keep scrolling)
3.

Our word blocks!

Kids and adults alike can manipulate our 48 double-sided blocks (so 96 words in all) to create fun sentences and simple short stories.

Here are three examples.

Where did we buy them? We didn't. We invented them!

We took child-safe wood blocks, curated a list of words, and then the very talented Jasmine and her Cricut added white backgrounds and each letter one at a time.

We've tried them out at home, and they are lots of fun. You might not want to stop at just one sentence.

WriteOn Joliet will also have information about the group as a whole and individual authors separately.

We hope you will leave our table more excited about reading and writing then before you arrived.

BryonySeries Word Search

Want to stretch your brain a little (as if Monday didn't do that all by itself).

My family has always loved word searches, so I've played around with a few sites to create a BryonySeries one.

Here's a link to one I created this weekend.

By refreshing the page, you will generate a different BryonySeries word search that features different combinations of thirty people, places, and pets.

The puzzle will remain on The Word Search site for 30 days (I created it on Saturday).

Have fun!

Just Twenty-Six Letters

It occurred to me the other day how magic writing truly is.

With just twenty-six letters, we can inform, stir minds, call to action, induce strong emotion, and make readers believe (if just for awhile) that make-believe is real.

Isn't that awesome?
