Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Feb. 17 to Feb. 23

Good morning!

I have nine news and features stories to share with you this week. But more will be posted over this weekend, especially with me working this weekend. So be sure to check back on The Herald-News site: shawlocal.com/the-herald-news.

Despite a steady flow of health challenges this year, I finally finished the novelette I started about eighteen months ago earlier this week and dabbled a bit with the third novel in the BryonySeries Limbo trilogy (see updates below).

And on Wednesday evening, the local authors of WriteOn Joliet (which includes the BryonySeries) experienced a huge victory (for us) in terms of recognition and future plans to connect readers with their books. 

I'll share more about that triumph in future posts. For now, we're basking in the recognition as we make plans to move forward.

Here are the BryonySeries book updates:

House on Top of the Hill: Third book in the BryonySeries Limbo trilogy. I now have a good working draft of the entire book and four chapters and a prologue that are ready for final edits. We are estimating a late 2024 release date.

The Adventures of Cornell Dyer: Timothy said the next book will be slightly dark ("slightly" because it's for kids, too) and will involve an old toy store. We are also working on the last book in the series (but it's not the final book, if that makes sense). Timothy is actually writing that one. We had a tentative "Cornell breakfast" scheduled for last weekend, which didn't happen. We are trying again for this weekend. We've scheduled and broke several in 2023. Our last one was July 2022. So we are LONG overdue.

Brainy Ann: The fifth book in The Girls of the BryonySeries is outlined and ready for some serious writing in 2024. The first chapter is written, hurray! Jennifer Wainwright has already started working on the cover portrait. That one is called "Brainy Ann."

Jennifer designed the cover portraits for "Julie and the Too-Hard Homework," "Katie and the Big Fear," "Summer Sisters." and "Karla Joins In," as well as the frontispiece for Lycanthropic Summer.

A Year of Shadows and Moonlight, of Gathering Blooms in the Woods: A rather unusual, poetic novelette in the second person is completed and just needs final copyediting. Rebekah is also playing around with art for the cover. We are estimating a mid-2024 release date.

Rebekah is also slowly updating the BryonySeries YouTube and Pinterest accounts. And she' catching up with Kindles for some of the BryonySeries books. So do watch for those.

BryonySeries at New Orleans North - a First for Us

For the first time, BryonySeries will have a table at New Orleans North.

The event will take place from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday in dowtown Joliet.

One of the vendor organizers actually asked me why I wasn't attending. And I told her that I didn't think it was the type of event that paired well with books. 

But she said all types of artists set up and encouraged us to come out. So - BryonySeries will be there, too.

If you live in the area, if you're planning to attend, we will be set up somewhere between the Rialto Square Theatre and Cheesecakes by James (I'm told).

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Dec. 1 through Dec. 7

It's a busy time of year for many people (including me), and this morning is no exception.

So here's just one thought: wherever you are, whatever you're doing, stop for a moment and be silent.

For instance, on my end of the world, the sun is streaming through the window, and I can hear street traffic in the distance. My dark roast needs a warm-up, but it's sitting in a beautiful white mug with the words "Mom" written in blue and purple all over it, a gift from Rebekah.

At my left is my cell phone, which goes off incessantly with messages. But the phone was handpicked by my son Timothy to meet all my needs, and I didn't even need to set it up; he did that all for me.

It's a beautiful day, isn't it?

It's looking a lot like Christmas in downtown Joliet

Like many people who have lived in Joliet for many years, I remember a different downtown, one that was busy and active at night, especially during the holidays.

Of course, the "Light up the Holidays" event the day after Thanksgiving is remisicent of those days and shows just how vibrant Joliet really can be.

However, the holiday cheer doesn't disppear when the parade ends, as these photos, all taken on Wednesday evening prove.

I learned aboyut Leeza's Care Center (and yes, I have interviewed Leeza Gibbons, just not for this story) years ago when I was caring for a man with a traumatic brain injury. At the time, the center did not have a support group for a brain injury, but it did form one (with a brain-injured woman making it happen) after his passing. Of course I wrote about it. Because I was on the newsletter list because of Matt, I learned - and wrote about - all the wonderful programs this center offered to the community. When the center closed, it's former leader worried about where clients would find the support they needed. Kathy Miller not only found a solution, she may have found an opportunity for new expansion.
