Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Dec. 1 through Dec. 7

It's a busy time of year for many people (including me), and this morning is no exception.

So here's just one thought: wherever you are, whatever you're doing, stop for a moment and be silent.

For instance, on my end of the world, the sun is streaming through the window, and I can hear street traffic in the distance. My dark roast needs a warm-up, but it's sitting in a beautiful white mug with the words "Mom" written in blue and purple all over it, a gift from Rebekah.

At my left is my cell phone, which goes off incessantly with messages. But the phone was handpicked by my son Timothy to meet all my needs, and I didn't even need to set it up; he did that all for me.

It's a beautiful day, isn't it?

Now, here's where to find information and after that, the stories.

Non-bylined features:

Monday through Saturday I assembled my non-bylined works - brief posts and calendar listings - into one convenient file and posting them on Facebook in the evening, so readers can easily choose the ones they want to read.

One can also find those event listings, the Gotta Do It calendar, as well as the pets, health, faith, and arts and entertainment calendars, under the sections tab on the left hand side of http://www.theherald-news.com/. Click on "features" and the topics drop down.  Gotta Do It runs under "people."

Community news? Again, under the sections tab, under features, and by topic. Updates are posted on these days in print and web (and some only on web on other days as I have the time): Monday (pets), Tuesday (health), Thursday (faith), Friday (arts and entertainment), and Sunday (people).

 Social media:

Daily updates: I do post the briefs and calendars on Twitter during the week, so you're welcome to follow me at @Denise_Unland61.

Called by God to create and share

Kathy Ellinger writes and illustrates so others will know God, too

Ellinger said since the early 1990s, she has never missed a day of Mass. She doesn't have the stamina for religious life so she lives her contemplative calling as a lay person.

"I can sing; I can chant; and I have a deep prayer life," Ellinger said.

It's looking a lot like Christmas in downtown Joliet

Like many people who have lived in Joliet for many years, I remember a different downtown, one that was busy and active at night, especially during the holidays.

Of course, the "Light up the Holidays" event the day after Thanksgiving is remisicent of those days and shows just how vibrant Joliet really can be.

However, the holiday cheer doesn't disppear when the parade ends, as these photos, all taken on Wednesday evening prove.

Taking time out to take in Joliet's holiday lights

On Wednesday night, that fourth child – now the same age I was when I had him – decided to head to downtown Joliet just to walk and look, while he took photos, because he likes downtowns and taking photos, and we both like lighted holiday displays.

Ahmad said this about Tuesday's upcoming story: This story is about my first encounter with the tornado since I had never heard this word in my country.
