Rebekah earned an Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts from Joliet Junior College in 2016 and has worked as a pastry chef, prep cook, and assistant sous chef in Will County restaurants.

WriteOn Joliet Radio-Player: Ed Calkins

 Good morning!

In these few weeks leading up to showtime, I'll be introducing you to each of the 2026 WriteOn Joliet Radio-Players and flooding this blog with show details.

Eight members of WriteOn Joliet will present “Shades of Noir." an original radio theater production, at 2 and 7 p.m. April 18 at the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park Theatre in Joliet.

Ed Calkins is a real, 60-something, proud of his Irish-heritage computer programmer and amateur writer who has also spent his entire life working in newspaper circulation. Years ago, Calkins invented a "ruthless dictator" alter ego, also known as "The Steward of Tara."

With Calkins' permission, BryonySeries author Denise M. Baran-Unland furthered altered him to create a minor character in "Bryony," making Calkins the first Irish vampire of any significance.

Of course, Calkins claims "Bryony" is really all about him, so he’s held his own book signings, which he is calls, "The Ed Calkins Tour." There must be some truth in his sentiments, because Calkins' plot importance does grow with each novel in the original BryonySeries trilogy

The post "Twenty Questions With Ed Calkins" will give more insight into the man, the myth, the character, and the author.

Calkins is the author of "The Fifth," (his backstory) “Ruthless” (also his backstory), "Recovering Ruthless" (also his back story with an emphasis on the BryonySeries novel "Staked!" and “Denise M. Baran-Unland's Irish Genealogy.”

He also shares his writings on the BryonySeries blog. Email him at bryonyseries@gmail.com.

The other authors and performers on April 18 are Denise M. Baran-Unland, Mauverneen Blevins, Holly Coop, Steve Cordin, Cean Magosky, Jenny Russ, and Duanne Walton.

A "Bryony"-Inspired Bracelet From a "Team Henry" Member

In December 2024, I ran into Jamie Wood, owner of The Raven's House at a holiday vendor fair (Rebekah and I'd come out to support Cindy at her first solo event).

If you recall, I met Jamie in October 2024 when I bought my "Stingy Jack" necklace from her.

I admired one of her handmade bracelets called "Red and Rose," which Jamie then said she felt inspired to make it after reading "Bryony."

In fact, after she finished "Bryony," she messaged me and said she "loved Henry a lot" and then added:

He seemed the most sincere in his intent. I was drawn how he chose to be the "dumpy" lit teacher in the "real" world. As a young girl, he would be the type of Vampire I would have been drawn to if I lived in the book.🖤💜

Well, I have super skinny wrists, so Jamie offered to make a smaller version of  "Red and Rose"  for me. I also admired a bracelet that reminded me of a lake, but that one is no longer available.

Jamie then showed me her winter/snowflake design and asked if I'd like that one. I did (it felt like a marrying of Simons Woods with Lake Munson to me), so Jamie made a smaller one in that design, too.

Well, 2025 was off the charts for my family and me, challenge-wise. So I only just recently was able to pick up those bracelets. And they are lovely!

Jamie and I are now (quite unintentionally) "three for three."

Because Jamie also bought "Visage" and "Before The Blood: Henry Matthews" over this past year.

To purchase "Red and Rose" and check out all available store items (jewelry and more), visit theravenshouse.net/s/shop.
