Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Nov. 2 to Nov. 8

Event Updates

The BryonySeries Halloween display is still up at The Book Market. We were planning to take it down today, but we may now be euthanizing our cat Midnight. So the display will most likely remain up until Tuesday. So please do stop in and check it out. Along with seven curated BryonySeries books for you to browse and buy, the display features all-new Halloween Ribbit-Ribbits from Cindy - and some free gifts with purchase while supplies last.

We are also participating in four more events (so far) in November and December.

North Pole Christmas Market: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Renaissance Center, 214 N. Ottawa St., Joliet. The Christmas Market is part of the Joliet City Center Partnership's "Light Up the Holidays Festival and Parade." And we are participating in THREE unique ways this year. More details to come later.

Plus, the ByronySeries will appear at The Book Market in Crest Hill from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on one date in November and one in December, both TBA.

BryonySeries books-in-progress

House on Top of the Hill: Third book in the BryonySeries Limbo trilogy, and the book is now live on Amazon. We are hoping print copies available for sale at WriteOn Joliet's anthology release party on Dec. 5.

The Adventures of Cornell Dyer: No updates here in a very long time, mostly because Timothy and Daniel are super busy with school on top of work (and plenty of work-related traveling). However, I outlined a "bonus" book that is intended for distribution at Bicentennial's "Ye Olde Mayfest" event in 2025. Here is a recap of the 2024 event.

Timothy said his concept for the next book in the actual series will be slightly dark ("slightly" because it's for kids, too) and will involve an old toy store. We are also working on the last book in the series (but it's not the final book, if that makes sense). Timothy is actually writing that one. In order to make progress on any of this, Timothy is hoping to schedule a "Cornell breakfast." But Timothy and Daniel are very busy with work and school right now. We've scheduled and broke several Cornell breakfasts in 2023 and 2024. Our last one was July 2022. So we are LONG, LONG, LONG overdue.

Brainy Ann: The fifth book in The Girls of the BryonySeries is outlined and the first chapter is written, hurray! Jennifer Wainwright, who welcomed her first child into the world in April, has already started working on the cover portrait. I've neglected this book for a few months and hope to revisit it soon. We wanted to release it in late 2024, but 2024 has been a challenging year. I'm shooting for early 2025.

Jennifer designed the cover portraits for "Julie and the Too-Hard Homework," "Katie and the Big Fear," "Summer Sisters." and "Karla Joins In," as well as the frontispiece for Lycanthropic Summer.

Rebekah is also slowly (very, very slowly) updating the BryonySeries YouTube and Pinterest accounts. And she' catching up with Kindles for some of the BryonySeries books. So do watch for those.

And finally...

The manuscript for Ed Calkins, Steward of Tara's third book in his Ruthless trilogy is submitted and will be my next editing project once "House on Top of the Hill" is complete. Ed

s first book is "Ruthless," his second is "The Fifth," and he is also the author of "Denise Unland's Irish Genealogy."

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Jan. 7 to Jan. 20

Good morning!

Today I have just thirteen features and news stories to share with you today. Most of these stories are from the past week and will be posted over the weekend. So be sure to check back on The Herald-News site: shawlocal.com/the-herald-news.

Last Tuesday, my sister and I flew out of state quiet abruptly when Sarah received word that my father was failing rapidly. Fortunately, we made it in time. But it's been an intense week.

We flew back very late Friday night, and I jumped right into the weekend shift. We did have Monday off for Martin Luther King Day, so I caught up on a few "life" things. Tuesday was a day of doctor appointments from beginning to end, with more tomorrow morning.

But after all that, I am looking forward to some unstructured time.

In the meantime, here is a quick recap on BryonySeries projects in the works.

I now have rough drafts for the first five chapters of in the final book in the BryonySeries Limbo trilogy: House on Top of the Hill and hope to get another done this weekend.

I am in the process of writing the next book in The Adventures of Cornell Dyer subseries: Cornell Dyer and the Hounds of Basketville and made some progress on that story on Monday. Sue Midlock almost has the art done, too. But I will adjust and get that book written soon.

I'm also working on a guide book to the series called: Welcome to Munsonville: the People, Places, and Things of the BryonySeries.

And I'm also working on a novella. But I'm not sharing any details yet.

Rebekah is also slowly updating the BryonySeries YouTube and Pinterest accounts, so watch for those.

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, June 12 through June 18

Good morning!

I have twenty-one feature stories to share with you this morning - with another fifteen that haven't posted to The Herald-News website yet, so watch for them over the weekend.

I'm working on a couple big features projects today and Sunday, so the rainy weather in my part of the world is perfect for getting the words out.

Here's a quick summary of where I'm at, fiction-wise.

The next book in The Adventures of Cornell Dyer chapter book series: Cornell Dyer and the Whispering Wardrobe should be available for purchase this weekend at the earliest and beginning of next week at the latest.

I know I said that last week, but Rebekah had an especially busy week at work and didn't have time to finish the Wardrobe's Kindle. But we are nearly there, I think.

Timothy's been busy, too, so while I'm waiting to schedule a time to meet to outline Cornell Dyer and the Calcium-Deficient Bones, I have two other Cornell Dyer projects in the very early works.

One is a Cornell Dyer book I'm "sort of" co-writing with Rebekah. Many, many years ago, this dyslexic daughter of mine started her own Cornell Dyer and actually had about 4,000 words down. We read through it last weekend, and she laughed a lot at her choice of word spellings, etc.

That said, she's got some great stuff there, and we're even incorporating some of those spellings and turns of phrases into the book. It's called Cornell Dyer and the "Mistical" Being, and I've did get a tiny bit of work on it last weekend - tiny because I did sleep away quite a bit of it (first COVID shot).

Also, Sarah had a crazy dream that sounded perfect for An Adventure of Cornell Dyer mystery. This one may take a while, but I've added it my list of projects for this year. And she is working on a couple drawings, the rules, and a map to go with it and help me out. It's called Cornell Dyer and the House of Broken Portals.

Bertrand the Mouse still has not come home. Sarah reached out to his "real mom" this past week to see if she can possible remake him. She has a lot of health issues, but she is going to try to make two - in case he runs off again.

The first book in the new BryonySeries Limbo trilogy The Phoenix is now available in the BryonySeries store.

I'm hoping to get some work done on the second book of the Limbo trilogy - Call of the Siren - but because of the abundance of new characters and situations, I am pretty much starting from scratch, so progress is still very, very slow. But I'm hoping to peck at it a bit, if my energy allows it.

I scratched the surface of a new series in the BryonySeries this past weekend. It's an idea Sarah suggested to me over a decade ago. It's aimed at tween girls, so if you have a tween, are a tween, or will have a tween someday, this might interest you.

And if you missed it, I had a really nice review on Bryony recently and also one on Visage. Both are from the same reader, which is now also reading Staked!

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, March 13 through March 19

Good morning!

It's been a few weeks since I shared an update on my fiction projects. But I will keep that brief because I have twenty-five stories to share with you today.

I am currently working on the second book of the new BryonySeries trilogy called Limbo. The heavy dediting for the first book, The Phoenix, is done.

Rebekah is learning a new that she wants to use in the creation of this book only, so the formatting is take a little bit of time. When the formatting is done, we'll order a proof, and I'll give it one last copyedit.

I'm only slowly working on a very basic draft of the second book in the BryonySeries Limbo series. This one is called Call of the Siren. I'm using a slightly different structure for this book, and, to also change my perspective a bit, I've signed up for an intense, three-day writing retreat with the 5 a.m. writer's club for the end of April.

Although I've taken one-person, in-home writing retreats in the past (and most likely will do at least one this year), this is my first writing retreat that is not organized or led by me and also includes other people. I am really looking forward to it.

I'm also working at finishing up Cornell Dyer and the Whispering Wardrobe and Cornell Dyer and the Miraculous Pot of Coffee is in very early outline form (Timothy creates the basic story, so it's simmering in the back of his mind).

I'm also, and also very slowly, giving the original BryonySeries "drop of blood trilogy" (Bryony, Visage and Staked!) another copy edit. Rebekah didn't like the original formatting on them (she didn't do those books) and redid them earlier this year.

But because I know the books do contain some typos, I asked her to hold off on re-uploading them until I can give them another look. I'm doing that very slowly, hoping to catch any lingering errors.

Nothing new on the Bertrand the Mouse front yet - but I am planning on releasing three more of his books this year.
