Sue's Diner: Bulldog Sloppy Joe

Today's recipe is perfect for heading into the holiday weekend, one that could appeal to people of all ages.

It's fast and simple to prepare and easy on the budget, too.

This recipe also appears in our fundraising cookbook Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles from "Bryony."

On Halloween, Steve thoughtfully prepared a large pot of his barbecue beef so Melissa and Brian could eat early and have plenty of time to get into their costumes. Dressing as Bryony could have been more fun, had Melissa realized at the time the irony of Brian’s vampire garb.

Try this recipe on the Sue's Diner page on the BryonySeries website.

But try the recipe this week. It will be gone next week. A new recipe will take it's place.

If you have any troubleshooting questions or comments, email us at bryonyseries@gmail.com.

By the way, Sue's Diner is only real in the BryonySeries world. But didn't Timothy do a great job making the page look like a real menu at a vintage diner?

Here is the full diner page: bryonyseries.com/sue-s-diner. You can't really order, of course (wouldn't it be great if you could?).

Slightly Behind and Slightly Ahead

So I spent a delightful afternoon yesterday with Rebekah and Cindy as we turned our kitchen into a test kitchen of sorts.

We created a lot of Valentine's Day recipes to run in The Herald-News over the next two weeks, and we (FINALLY!) created a new recipe (Bulldog Sloppy Joes, which we ate for lunch/dinner) for the Sue's Diner page of the BryonySeries website.

Unfortunately, with all the great modifications Timothy is making to the site, I could only upload a photo on the page, since that page is back under construction. So sharing the recipe in now delayed.

On the sunnier side of deadlines, the proof copy of the second installment arrived last night with Amazon sending me a photo to the BryonySeries email to prove it was delivered a day early.

So naturally, and especially after having worked most of the weekend, I had to review three chapters before I went to bed. Book number two is not due for release until March, but if all goes well, we might see it in print in February.

And that's the view from over this writer's coffee cup on a very snowy Monday morning!

Bulldog Sloppy Joe
By Jeremiah Boerema

3 pounds ground beef
½ to 1 cup chopped onion
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 cup ketchup
1 cup barbecue sauce, preferable Sweet Baby Rays

Brown ground beef and onions at the same time over medium to high heat. Mix the remaining ingredients for the sauce well. Drain off the extra fat from the meat and onion mixture. Add sauce, stir, and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. If extra sauce is desired, add equal parts of ketchup and barbecue sauce. To achieve the Bulldog effect, use green ketchup instead of red. Yield: 6 to 8 servings
