Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, July 11 through July 17

Good morning!

I have ten stories online to share with you today, with more stories likely going live over the weekend. So please check back at shawlocal.com/the-herald-news.

On July 3, the BryonySeries/B.L.O.C.K.S. team hosted the children's games for the fourth year in a row at the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park Theatre in Joliet. Despite breaking down early due to lightning and approaching stores, we had a very successful night.

And 14 people (by my account) attended "Book Publishing 101 Saturday at the Joliet Public Library on June 27, and the library was very pleased. Thank you to all who attended. The feedback was very positive.

The library is planning to reschedule this presentation at a later date. So if you missed it, you will likely get another opporunity.

Write your own story with our unique, one-of-a-kind, made-just-for-us story manipulable story blocks. And be sure to pick up one (or more) WriteOn Joliet-authored books (titles for all ages), which we will distribute for free.

BryonySeries books-in-progress

Bertrand the Mouse: We have plenty of Bertrand photos and ideas. Several are at the top of the list. At some point, we will assemble and release some more.

The Adventures of Cornell Dyer: Cornell Dyer and the House of Horreur" (because the toymaker's last name is "Horreur.") is finally begun, although albeit very slowly. I'd like to get enough done over the next month or so to finally give Sue Midlock (our artist for The Adventures of Cornell Dyer) some ideas for the book's cover and chapter heading illustrations.

Brainy Ann: The fifth book in The Girls of the BryonySeries is nearly drafted with some partial editing already begun. We plan to release this book in 2026.

Jennifer designed the cover portraits for "Julie and the Too-Hard Homework," "Katie and the Big Fear," "Summer Sisters." and "Karla Joins In," as well as the frontispiece for "Lycanthropic Summer."

Other books: I am not writing a novel this year. But we plan to release a BryonySeries Christmas anthology around the holidays. This will be Christmas excerpts from existing BryonySeries novels along with a few bonus chapters only available in this anthology.

We also have a prologue/first chapter sampler of all the BryonySeries novels and an novel excerpt (so far) that's only available at certain events and another sampler cal;led "Angel or Demon" that is also only available at select events.

Rebekah is also slowly (very, very slowly) updating the BryonySeries YouTube and Pinterest accounts. And she' catching up with Kindles for some of the BryonySeries books. So do watch for those.

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, July 29 to Aug. 11

Good morning!

Today I'm sharing two weeks worth of features and news stories with you today since I was in the hospital last Friday.

So you have sixteen to check out today. More stories will be posted today and over the weekend as I am working through the weekend. So be sure to check back on The Herald-News site: shawlocal.com/the-herald-news.

Bertrand the Mouse is hosting a Back to School Birthday Bash on Aug. 19 at The Book Market in Crest Hill and YOU are invited (in person if you live the in general area).

The birthday bash will be from noon to 4 p.m. at 2365 Plainfield Road in Crest Hill. Santa will be serving FREE ice cream from 1 to 3 p.m.

The only gifts Bertrand wants is more books for Santa. Last year and early this year, the BryonySeries donated 234 Bertrand the Mouse books to Santa and his friend the Easter bunny.

Both characters (and the same person) distributed those books to children and special needs adults. We are planning to donate more books this holiday season. Bertrand was a huge hit, and we'd like to increase the amount of books we are able to give. This is where you come in.

We'll be selling Bertrand books for just $5 each at his birthday party if you'd like to donate a Bertrand book (or two) and give it to Santa personally.

And if you don't - well, you're still on his "nice" list, and you can still get free ice cream (while the ice cream lasts). Bertrand will want to see you either way (so will his Uncle Barty). And, of course, we will sing "Happy Birthday" to the little crocheted guy, too.

You don't live in the area (or can't attend) but still want to help out? More details to follow in Tuesday's blog.

WriteOn Joliet returned to the digital media center at the downtown branch of the Joliet Public Library last week to finish editing the radio play we presented at the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park Theatre in Joliet on April 22.

But when we did the final editing, we realized one reading didn't save and another part was missing. So we still have a bit more to go.

Also, if you missed that radio play the first time, you will have another opportunity at 10 a.m. Sept. 9 at the downtown branch of the Joliet Public Library. More on this later.

Here is a quick recap of BryonySeries projects in progress:

House on Top of the Hill: Third book in the BryonySeries Limbo trilogy. I now have a good working draft of the entire book and two chapters that are ready for final edits.

Cornell Dyer and the Howls of Basketville: The next book in The Adventures of Cornell Dyer subseries is finally in production. We can't wait to release it into the hands of readers. Timothy said the next book will be slightly dark ("slightly" because it's for kids, too) and will involve an old toy store. I cannot wait for our next "Cornell" breakfast.

You can find other titles in the series here. Timothy has not yet added our latest titles to the BryonySeries bookstore. But all titles are also on Amazon. 

Karla Joins In: The fourth book in The Girls of the BryonySeries series. Eleven of the twelve chapters are completed. and ready for their final edits. Jennifer Wainright iw working the cover. I never thought I'd revisit Karla and John-Peter's friendship again (albeit from an earlier time in their lives), so I'm very excited to read the final draft.

BryonySeries reference/guide book: Welcome to Munsonville: the People, Places, and Things of the BryonySeries. I'd love to have this one ready by the end of the year. Pecking slowly at it.

A Year of Shadows and Moonlight, of Gathering Blooms in the Woods: A rather unusual, poetic novella in the second person. Half of it is written and edited and another half is loosely written. Rebekah is also playing around with art for the cover. 

Rebekah is also slowly updating the BryonySeries YouTube and Pinterest accounts. And she' catching up with Kindles for some of the BryonySeries books. So do watch for those.

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, June 12 through June 18

 Good morning!

I have twenty-one feature stories to share with you this morning - with another fifteen that haven't posted to The Herald-News website yet, so watch for them over the weekend.

I'm working on a couple big features projects today and Sunday, so the rainy weather in my part of the world is perfect for getting the words out.

Here's a quick summary of where I'm at, fiction-wise.

The next book in The Adventures of Cornell Dyer chapter book series: Cornell Dyer and the Whispering Wardrobe should be available for purchase this weekend at the earliest and beginning of next week at the latest.

I know I said that last week, but Rebekah had an especially busy week at work and didn't have time to finish the Wardrobe's Kindle. But we are nearly there, I think.

Timothy's been busy, too, so while I'm waiting to schedule a time to meet to outline Cornell Dyer and the Calcium-Deficient Bones, I have two other Cornell Dyer projects in the very early works.

One is a Cornell Dyer book I'm "sort of" co-writing with Rebekah. Many, many years ago, this dyslexic daughter of mine started her own Cornell Dyer and actually had about 4,000 words down. We read through it last weekend, and she laughed a lot at her choice of word spellings, etc.

That said, she's got some great stuff there, and we're even incorporating some of those spellings and turns of phrases into the book. It's called Cornell Dyer and the "Mistical" Being, and I've did get a tiny bit of work on it last weekend - tiny because I did sleep away quite a bit of it (first COVID shot).

Also, Sarah had a crazy dream that sounded perfect for An Adventure of Cornell Dyer mystery. This one may take a while, but I've added it my list of projects for this year. And she is working on a couple drawings, the rules, and a map to go with it and help me out. It's called Cornell Dyer and the House of Broken Portals.

Bertrand the Mouse still has not come home. Sarah reached out to his "real mom" this past week to see if she can possible remake him. She has a lot of health issues, but she is going to try to make two - in case he runs off again.

The first book in the new BryonySeries Limbo trilogy The Phoenix is now available in the BryonySeries store. 

I'm hoping to get some work done on the second book of the Limbo trilogy - Call of the Siren - but because of the abundance of new characters and situations, I am pretty much starting from scratch, so progress is still very, very slow. But I'm hoping to peck at it a bit, if my energy allows it.

I scratched the surface of a new series in the BryonySeries this past weekend. It's an idea Sarah suggested to me over a decade ago. It's aimed at tween girls, so if you have a tween, are a tween, or will have a tween someday, this might interest you.

And if you missed it, I had a really nice review on Bryony recently and also one on Visage. Both are from the same reader, which is now also reading Staked!

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Sept. 1 through Sept. 6

It's been a blur of a couple weeks back! (although it's been great to be back).

Timothy's birthday is this weekend, so I'm hoping to slow down a bit (and laughing out loud as I look at my to-do list).

Still, pause and rest is important (even to me). So while I'm delighted I made progress on some projects, I plan to balance that with some quiet, creative time, and also with some family time.

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, June 4 through June 9

Last weekend was a busy on-call blur, I don't even recall my weekend plan list.

That said, here are my goals for this weekend:

Finish Henry's chapter nine. Ten is done, so finishing this one means only one more novel to go!

Fix the copy errors in Cornell (an independent party did the edits last weekend)

Add the Cornell reviews to the website.

Work on the second book in the Adventures of Cornell Dyer series: Cornell Dyer and the Necklace of Forgetfulness.

Art for the second Bertrand book (Bertrand's First Book of Numbers) is nearly done.

And be sure to check out the new look for Sue's Diner on Sunday, with links right here on this blog.

Now for my "real" writing.

Before we left, I wanted to try the caramel cake ($3), but Aisha’s didn’t have any that day. That’s when my friend pointed out the dessert I’d overlooked: sweet potato cheesecake ($4.50).

Plainfield preschoolers make zen garden for memory care residents
School project at KLA Schools of Plainfield has therapeutic benefits

 “While learning about sand, we incorporated the many uses of sand, where sand comes from and how sand is developed,” Debbie Wozniak, preschool teacher, said. “From that, Sandy came up with the idea of a zen garden because zen gardens have sand in them.”

Sandy LeBlanc is the other, Wozniak, is another preschool teacher.

Artworks: Recreating the Philippines’ essence in art

This former abstract artist and retired teacher will exhibit three of her favorite pieces as well as several other prints on Saturday at the fourth annual Piyesta Pinoy Festival in Bolingbrook.

"They go back to my time, when I was a kid growing up, the things that I saw,” Tita Recometa Brady of Joliet said.


Cornerstone Services in Joliet to hold 3rd art show

Types of artwork will include drawings and paintings, weavings, photographs and decorated objects. Many artists will be present to answer questions. The photography portion of the show is new and incorporates commentary on why each photograph was taken.
