Feeling so thankful this morning!

Yesterday I made it to my St. Nicholas in Homewood and gave thanks with my church community, worked while my family napped and then cooked our traditional Thanksgiving dinner (poor boys, kettle chips, and pumpkin pie), and then took care packages to one son who had to work and another who has been out of work for the last month due to an infection in his bone.

The day was joyful and serene, really a great day!

Today it's back to deadlines and teaching a writing workshop tonight. Have a great Friday readers, writers, and vampire fans!

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Aug. 12 through Aug. 17

Very busy Friday, so just a couple quick updates and then the stories.

Proof copy for Cornell Dyer and the Necklace of Forgetfulness is here. Along with editing the fifth book of Before the Blood, I shall be reading this. Rebekah has already noted a couple of formatting issues, so we already have one more round to go.

Taking another at-home writing retreat first weekend in September and will most likely disappear from social media. This will fill in the chinks of scenes, etc. that didn't get written during July's retreat.

In a couple of weeks, four local artists who created artwork for several of my books will be exhibiting their work at Book and Bean Cafe during the months of September and October. The artist reception will be 6 p.m. Sept. 27. Please come out and support them with a few minutes of their presence. All four do very different types of work.

Then on Oct. 11, WriteOn Joliet member and man of a thousand voices Duanne Walton and I will be doing a dramatic reading of Snowbell at 6 p.m. at the Book and Bean. Don't know what that is? The BryonySeries newsletter is very close to a real launch date. Reasons for the delay? Newsletters suddenly because the fashion in 2018, and we wanted to let some of that settle before we launched ours. Also, it's a bit different in scope, and we wanted time to plan, as well as learn and work with the template. Finally, since I was asked to write a newsletter for The Herald-News (and then launched a second one, the LocalLit short story newsletter), it seemed wise to concentrate on those first.

We started with the pretzel appetizer, and the plate came with two options for dipping sauces: cheese and spicy mustard. I'm also a mustard fanatic, so that's what I went for first. Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Feb. 19 through Feb. 24

So I'm a little surprise to see the amount of stories by me this week, as I backed off on features writing to catch up on news releases and briefs.

I am somewhat caught up but not totally, although by Monday, I do hope to be over the hump. And I also plan to schedule "brief-only" weeks in the future as needed. I don't to be this far behind again.

I'm planning a late-ish night tonight for survival's sake. I have a 12-hour fast ahead of me for some blood work, and I don't do well with fasting. I'm not addicted to food, but anything past eight to ten hours makes me dizzy and disoriented. My appointment isn't until almost 8:30 so I don't want to wake too early, hoping to sleep through most of it. Wish me luck.

My Before the Blood muse kicked in nicely this week. Hope it stays running high through tomorrow.

We had one formatting issue with Cornell Dyer and the Missing Tombstone that we addressed last weekend. We're hoping to (FINALLY) upload the book one last time tomorrow. and get it published already. Wish us luck on this one, too.

First of all, social media posting for today and through the weekend will be spotty to non-existent. I have a vacation day today, so I'm spending it and the next two days in a nearby town with one of my sons, his wife, and three of my grandchildren.

And I have to leave the house early today because I'm the chief babysitter of a newborn, toddler, and preschooler while their parents are at work. And before that, I have to shoot a video for work (Hey, it's on the way).

And I'm also teaching tonight, but that will get me in the mood for some late night fiction-writing...and for next weekend, where I intend to embark on Before the Blood writing marathon.

While that may sound awesome, it also means that I have to cram all my deadlines into Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of next week. Bring on the coffee!

Leadership changes coming to Stepping Stones in Joliet (VIDEO EXTRA)

Paul Lauridsen will build on Stepping Stones’ approach to substance abuse treatment

Last year Stepping Stones treated 701 people, Pete McLenighan, executive director, said. Two hundred are on a waiting list, with 120 of them waiting for residential treatment, he added. Furthermore, Stepping Stones continues to follow up with its clients. The era of "28 days and done" is gone.

"Our ultimate goal is abstinence and even that is being modified," McLenighan said. "If someone is being maintained on a medication – typically through a doctor's supervision – and is functioning well and living a stable life, productive life, that's ultimately what we're trying to help people achieve."

Rose Sochan’s Christmas concert and final CD release party is Sunday

Through the years, Rose has performed pop music at nightclubs, lounges and even in her brother’s rock band. In college, Rose played mostly classical compositions. At church, Rose played Christian music.

Starting 15 years ago, Rose also has played for weddings at the Jacob Henry Mansion Estate in Joliet. But the most difficult pieces Rose ever played were “Here I Am Lord” at her mother’s funeral and “Amazing Grace” at her father’s.

Easterseals Joliet Region hosting its final American Girl fashion shows this weekend

The fashion show has two parts, so during intermission the models change clothes, Teresa  Summers, development associate at Easterseals Joliet, said. Some of them have to change quicker than others, she added.

“There’s a lot of changing of hair ribbons and bows to match their outfits. It gets hectic back there,” Summers said. “But, for the most part, we’re a well-oiled machine. We have a lot of volunteers.”

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, March 6 through March 11

Got a bit back into the fiction saddle this week. A light bulb moment this weekend showed the deficiency: I was trying to write scenes with characters I didn't know well. I liken it to attempting to write a feature story without interviewing anyone.

So this week, I dug out the ye olde character questionnaires and began the process of becoming introduced to these new people in my head. It's a slow process, but ideas are spinning, very heartening.

The slow process will extend into the weekend. Although I am not on call, I will be out of the office two mornings this week (speaking at a high schoool on Monday and accompanying my oldest son on a personal errand on Wednesday), so I need to ensure the work gets done. That's in addition to visiting a disabled adult niece on Saturday, someone I love dearly and have not seen for years.

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Feb. 28 through March 4

Been a low fiction week in terms of composition only. Certainly busy in other area.

On Monday night, I shared my ideas and tips of revision to a group of four writers (including one employee, an aspiring novelist) who was on the clock but had permission to join us) and answered their questions. That was the Plainfield Public Library. In return for my time, the library sent a donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties. What a win-win night. :)

Last night, I co-led WriteOn Joliet.

This weekend, I'm the weekend editor for two newspapers, which is just as well since ideas are scant for Henry's chapter three. So I'm giving my muse a planned vacation.

An Extraordinary Life: Cardiomyopathy didn't stop New Lenox man from having a good heart.

I had written two previous stories about Robert Strilko and his goal of a heart transplant, which he wanted less for himself and more to keep living for his wife and two young daughters. Diocese of Joliet youth choirs travel to Rome

Great stuff here. Nine members of a large family who had never flown on a commercial plane (much less out of the country) made the financial committment to take the pilgrimage together.
