Good morning!
It was a bit of a strange work week. I was on standby Tuesday night to help with election coverage if need be and then off Wednesday because I'm working through the weekend. And then, because of that, I'll also be off on Tuesday.
But I do have sixteen feature stories to share with you this week. And I did, between having Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday off, read through The Phoenix.
For those of you waiting for the book's release, it's going to be a bit of rinse and repeat. While I'm happy to report I've become much better at typos (I weeded them out pretty well - for once - and my editor only found a few more), I found plenty of areas where parts of certain scenes were not as "precise" as they should be, if that makes sense.
So the proof copy is fairly marked up. I also created a one-sheet of broad areas I want to rewrite for greater specificity. After I rewrite those areas, I will send for another proof and reread. And I'll do it a third time, if need be.
This is actually the most rewriting I've done after getting to the proof stage. I was a little surprised and, yet, not too surprised.
I'd had the feeling the story was not quite THERE, but I couldn't find the trouble spots. Colleen had the same feeling and offered some suggestions. I implemented most of those and sent for the proof.
But once I'd held the beautifully formatted book (thank you so much, Rebekah!) and could actually read the story with the visual and experience I intended, weak spots stood out like relief. This contrast was especially noticeable against the chapters that absolutely hit the mark. These were especially gratifying to read and encouraged me to whip out that red pen.
It also shows each book needs its own treatment and has its own path to "finished." So The Phoenix is close to its eventually releasing, but it's not quite ready to rise.
Now back to the sixteen feature stories. Simply click on the link of the story that looks interesting to you. Happy scrolling!
But before the stories, I have a list of additional resources and information. Please check them out, too -
Finally, if you'd like to find more kindness in your life, consider this book.
And have a great Friday!
