Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Nov. 25 through Nov. 30

T'is the season to be super busy!

With some extra work projects this month and extra meetings today, I'll just (almost) right to the stories.

One upcoming event of particular note: The WriteOn Joliet Gothic Book Club is concluding it's "read" of Sue Mydliak's Birthright season this Saturday. For the next couple months, we will take a fantasy turn and read Colleen Robbins Daruga's Quest.

If you haven't checked us out, tomorrow would be a good day to do so. We meet from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the Book and Bean Cafe, 3395 Black Road in Joliet (inside the Joliet Public Library).

The book club is perfectly free (the coffee is not), and one does not need to belong to WriteOn Joliet to attend.

Hope to see you there!

And now, where to find me and related BryonySeries information online.

Non-bylined features:

Monday through Saturday I assembled my non-bylined works - brief posts and calendar listings - into one convenient file and posting them on Facebook in the evening, so readers can easily choose the ones they want to read.

One can also find those event listings, the Gotta Do It calendar, as well as the pets, health, faith, and arts and entertainment calendars, under the sections tab on the left hand side of http://www.theherald-news.com/. Click on "features" and the topics drop down.  Gotta Do It runs under "people."

Community news? Again, under the sections tab, under features, and by topic. Updates are posted on these days in print and web (and some only on web on other days as I have the time): Monday (pets), Tuesday (health), Thursday (faith), Friday (arts and entertainment), and Sunday (people).

 Social media:

Daily updates: I do post the briefs and calendars on Twitter during the week, so you're welcome to follow me at @Denise_Unland61.

BryonySeries stuff: I post curated content relating to the BryonySeries at @BryonySeries. And assorted related content at www.facebook.com/BryonySeries. And of course, please follow the adventures of Bertrand the Mouse on Instagram at bertrand_bryonyseries.

If you're a writer anywhere in the world, you're welcome to jon WriteOn Joliet's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/writeonminooka/?ref=bookmarks. We're based in Joliet, Illinois, but we love to meet and interact with writers outside our area, too.

Only 3 changes are necessary
Addressing prediabetes and risk factors may prevent or delay diabetes

According to a news release from the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic, 1 in 3 people in the U.S. has prediabetes. This means a person's blood glucose is higher than normal, but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis.

I now am one of those prediabetic people.

'A priest of all the people'
Vicar at 150-year-old New Lenox church has solid plans for its future

"We say that God loves everyone and we do mean that," Rev. Gregory L. Millikin said. "They hear 'God is love' and that 'God loves you for how you are; God made you that way.' We don't preach guilt and we don't dangle sacraments over people's heads like they have a toy to win."

A magical musical with a message
Holiday show by 'Artemis Fowl' author coming to the Rialto on Tuesday

"It's very tough to change people's minds and open their eyes," Eoin Colfer said. "I've written over 40 books. Sometimes you have success with that and sometimes you don't. But what I've learned is that it's 10 times more difficult to switch an adult's perspective than to switch a child's. ... Maybe in 10 years some of these kids will be decision-makers and in a position to help the homeless people."

Artworks A time for reflection, a time for peace
Local high school choirs to perform song composed by Troy music teacher

"Peace isn't just a slogan or a movement," Jonathan Greene, composer, said. "You really need to start with a person. You start with a place of reflection. And once I answered some of those deeper questions, it evolved into this song."

Cowie said: "Iwrote three manuscripts without selling them, but when I started letting my natural voice take over, it was as if I was channeling my inner Dave Barry and Douglas Adams. Plus I like cracking myself up."
