After Melissa
shares her feelings for John, she worries all day about his dispassionate
reaction. Her mind felt as thick as Simons
Mansion pea soup. Here is
a modern version of that soup.
Split Pea Soup
By Sarah Stegall
1 ham bone
2 cups ham, cut into bite-sized pieces
1 bag split peas
6 carrots
8 cups chicken broth
2 cups water
1 packet sanza goya spice (optional)
2 tablespoons black pepper
Rinse peas and set aside. Boil the bone to remove any extra
meat you’d like. In a large pot, add chicken broth, water, peas, ham, pepper,
and spice, if desired. Bring to a boil. In the meantime, peel and cut carrots
into bite-sized pieces. Add to pot, cover, and simmer until peas are tender.
This could take up to 1 ½ hours, so give yourself plenty of time. Serve with
crackers. Yield: 6 servings.
