And Now the Catch-Up

So far, I'm crossing off the items on yesterday's to-do list.

However, Sunday is fast fading, and Monday is looming closer by the minute. And who knows? By next weekend, I might have my editorial notes for the first book of Before the Blood. So can't have old tasks hanging about.

Sue's Diner returns next week, FYI.

Gotta dash! :)

Day Off

I had a list of tasks for today. And so far, I've not done one.

Not. A. Single. One.

I read. I wasted time. Handled one crisis and am addressing another.

Except for the crises, it's been a nice, long day.

Sitting here now with a book on my lap and a cup of coffee at my side.

Bliss.

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Nov. 4 through Nov. 9

It's a grouchy morning. Technology and I are not living compatibly, and technology is getting the upper hand on way to many levels to enumerate.

But, hey! The snow is pretty, right?

And now, here's where to find me on social media (unless technology has taken another swipe at me) and links to this weeks's feature stories.

Non-bylined features:

Monday through Saturday I assembled my non-bylined works - brief posts and calendar listings - into one convenient file and posting them on Facebook in the evening, so readers can easily choose the ones they want to read.

One can also find those event listings, the Gotta Do It calendar, as well as the pets, health, faith, and arts and entertainment calendars, under the sections tab on the left hand side of http://www.theherald-news.com/. Click on "features" and the topics drop down.  Gotta Do It runs under "people."

Community news? Again, under the sections tab, under features, and by topic. Updates are posted on these days in print and web (and some only on web on other days as I have the time): Monday (pets), Tuesday (health), Thursday (faith), Friday (arts and entertainment), and Sunday (people).

 Social media:

Daily updates: I do post the briefs and calendars on Twitter during the week, so you're welcome to follow me at @Denise_Unland61.

BryonySeries stuff: I post curated content relating to the BryonySeries at @BryonySeries. And assorted related content at www.facebook.com/BryonySeries. And of course, please follow the adventures of Bertrand the Mouse on Instagram at bertrand_bryonyseries.

If you're a writer anywhere in the world, you're welcome to jon WriteOn Joliet's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/writeonminooka/?ref=bookmarks. We're based in Joliet, Illinois, but we love to meet and interact with writers outside our area, too.

Many definitions for "blackening" meat, poultry or fish call for dipping the item in spices and butter and then cooking it in a very hot skillet, which creates plenty of smoke. Here's a better way.

BryonySeries Throwback Thursday: Back to my Roots

Monday, March 31, 2014

But Wait, a Commercial Break: Back to my Roots

I wanted to write today about Christopher's thirty-second birthday, not so much about the day, exactly, but, well...those ruminations will have to wait another twenty-four, or so, hours.

Because I'm caught up and ahead at work and because my editorial assistant was gone today, I received permission to work offsite today at Christopher's apartment, in Chanahon, the village where we lived for many years before foreclosure, homelessness, etc.

Christopher's apartment is down the street from our old house. It's the site of most of my freelance work this past fall and the temporary home of my four cats. Temporary is right, because Christopher and his finacee, the lovely Jennifer Blades, well, they have some exciting news to share. And I'll wait until I'm free to share it.

In the meantime, interspersed with already scheduled interviews and deadlines, I cuddled the cats--and Faith sat on the back of my chair for old times sake, even though it was a kitchen chair and not my old office chair, which is probably still sitting in the abandoned attic--and walked the old route, the streets where I mourned lost love, mentally wrote several books, rejoiced in heart desires come true, reflected on the past and present and made plans for the future...oh, so many things!

The weather was mild; the breeze blew through me, adding to the exhilaration, and the sun shone warm. God is good; life is good.

Readers and Writers: Do You Use Goodreads?

My sister, a former bookseller turned librarian introduced me to Goodreads before 2007, I want to say, because I had not started writing Bryony yet.

Although it was my introduction to social media, I wasn't too interested and never explored it too much. I tend to be a solitary reader and writer and couldn't see the point of the site. But as time passes, I'm trying to become more social in my hobbies.

So "learn Goodreads" was part of the revised marketing plan I created a couple years ago, a thorough plan I'm gradually implementing.

Since my goal for 2019 (and I've already started) is to read the books of WriteOn Joliet authors this year, and since Amazon doesn't let me post reviews because I don't spend much money on the site, a fellow author suggested I post them on Goodreads.

Which is what I intend to do.

I used my extra hour on Saturday night to explore the site. Since my favorite genre isn't listed there so for me as an author, I'm already challenged to find readers. As a reader, it will also be challenging finding new reads.

I as surprised to find one of my favorite stories (Henry James' Turn of the Screw) only had a rating of 3.4. But good information for me.

My question to readers and writers: how much do you use the site and do you find it valuable? In what way?

Thank you in advance to anyone who chooses to share. :)

"Memories in the Kitchen"

Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles From "Bryony," is the official BryonySeries cookbook.

It's a collection of authentically Victorian recipes and recipes that were popular in the 1970s.

Some of the recipes came from 19th century, out-of-print cookbooks.

Some came from vintage cookbooks still in print and were used and modified with permission of the publisher.

Some came from the collection of The Henry Ford and features signature recipes of restaurants long since closed.

Some came from reader submissions.

All proceeds from cookbook sales benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties, a nod to the cooking/mentoring relationship between Steve Barnes and Brian Marchellis in Bryony.

So when you purchase a cookbook for yourself or as a gift, you not only might make your own "memories in the kitchen," you'll help a child.

And that's a sweet combination.

All proceeds benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties at www.bbbswillgrundy.org.

Order the cookbook at www.bryonyseries.com.

Setting Down the Pen

My first thought at realizing we have an extra hour tonight was, "Yes! I can stay up late and write!"

Such has been my thought since 2008 when I began writing Bryony in earnest.

Never did I dream that my dream of writing one novel would span a trilogy, a five-book prequel, a chapter book series, a children's series, and one cookbook.

Fifteen books so far with more chapter books and children's books outlined.

And a werewolf story that's scarcely more than a good idea. But I told Rebekah tonight I'd like to release it by Halloween.

Today I had this romantic notion of sitting at my computer, coffee by my side, desk light providing my only illumination, and starting the werewolf story. Because I love being lost in creativity and a good story.

Except I really am worded out. And putting out another novel in 2019 when I'll be editing and publishing five other ones, along with (hopefully) a couple more each of Cornell and Bertrand just sounds, well, hard.

Especially since the story is, at this point, only a premise, a few details, a title, and random ideas and phrases.

Granted, the werewolf story is a shorter standalone. And maybe Halloween is plausible.

And maybe it it not. At least, for 2019.

For most of my life, I've steeped myself in the words and thoughts of other writers. As a child. As a student. And especially as a homeschool parent, which provided the richest and most abundant years of reading.

For the last ten years, I've drawn on those wells to craft my own stories. I've read less, written more.

That well is tapped.

I literally wrung out the last word droplets with the fifth and final book of Before the Blood.

What's a writer to do?

Dig a new well, of course. And my tools are the same tools of the past. Everyone else's words.

So tonight, as soon as I post this blog, I'll be sitting on my bed, coffee by my side, desk light providing my only illumination, and reading one of the novels from the stacked up piles.

What's in those piles? Mostly books written by writer friends that I've never read or started to read, and, indeed, want to read. Others are books my kids have, for years, urged me to read.

So now is the time.

Because I have an extra hour tonight.

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Oct. 28 through Nov. 2

Just a quick commentary this morning. Tried sleeping off the migraine that's kept me company most of the week. I wasn't very successful.

Not had one in a long tie, so the lingering effects must be its way of making up for lost time, LOL.

Last night's open mic hosted by WriteOn Joliet filed the Book and Bean Cafe. We had a record number of twenty authors share their pieces on the topic if "fear." We had some meeting-attending members, some online members, and even a few prospective members and guests read. We gave away some books and sold a few books. It was a great night.

The previous night I spent in Mazon trick or treating with grankids and enjoying a Halloween cookout. The day before that was spent at my yearly trip to Loyola. I worked the last weekend so I could go and leave a little early the last few days. Soooooo grateful for the flexibility to do so.

My editor Colleen Robbins is nearly finished reading the last book in the BryonySeries prequel Before the Blood, so I anticipate meeting with her very soon to go over her editorial notes. Although she has (so far) a notebook and a half, she said all five books are, overall, a very clean read, and will need little additional work from me. That is the benefit of taking the time on the back end, and I'm thankful I did. First book is scheduled for a January 19 release, and we are right on schedule.

We MAY also have two more new books at the WriteOn Joliet anthology release party fro 6 to 8:30 p.m. November 16 at The Book Market in Crest Hill: a new Bertrand the Mouse book and a new Cornell Dyer book (need to read through the last proof this weekend).

Also this weekend, is the WriteOn Joliet Gothic Book Club from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. this Saturday at the Book and Bean Cafe in Joliet (please join us). We are currently reading The Legacy by Sue Mydliak. Books are available for sale at the cafe. Just ask at the counter if you don't see them.

I also plan to hang out a bit at The Book Market this weekend because WriteOn Joliet will also be rolling out a new initiative on November 16, which will be located at The Book Market. More on this later.

Finally, I have a breakfast meeting with Timothy Baran on Saturday morning to work out the details for the third book in the Adventures of Cornell Dyer book series. On Sunday afternoon, I'll be hanging out with a woman in her 90's, as I've been working on her memoir.

How's that for a "quick commentary?"

And now, here's where to find me on social media and links to this weeks's feature stories.

Non-bylined features:

Monday through Saturday I assembled my non-bylined works - brief posts and calendar listings - into one convenient file and posting them on Facebook in the evening, so readers can easily choose the ones they want to read.

Ten "Before the Blood" Quotes

Circulating around Facebook in various incarnations is a list of rather clever two-line horror stories. One WriteOn Joliet member posted such a list on our page, prompting another member to suggest we compose our own, in honor of October and Halloween, etc.

So this weekend, nibbling on pen cap and musing possibilities, I realized two things. One, the lazy selfish author in me would want to incorporate any two-line soundbites I'd write for mere exercise into a novel (Why waste them, right?). Two, the thought-provoking effects of the two-line challenge resembled the book quotes I'd pull and post on Facebook before the release of a book. We call them "30-Day Countdown Quotes."

Unfortunately, we I posed those of Staked! a year ago, thinking release was imminent.

My point is that the purpose of the exercise and my countdown quotes are the same: to tease the reader and whet the appetite for more. So instead of writing a random series of two-line stories and pulling my attention from my latest work-in-progress, I've chose instead to read some (or all) of those countdown quotes.

And since I'm approaching the end of John's portion of Before the Blood - some 50,000 words later and rather bittersweet - I pulled a few lines from each of the chapters. Feast on these, vampire fans!

They entered the birthing chamber, and he recoiled against the stifling stench of sweat, human waste, and blood. Why was it always blood? Prologue

1) With her spirits sucked as dry as an old orange, Lucetta edged between old Miss Polly and the end of larger sofa and pretended to enjoy a conversation about corns and smelling salts. Chapter 1: One Magical Christmas

2) On Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation when Abbot was in town, father and son attended High Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral, its Federal-style architecture and plaster ceiling and walls resembling home: hard, beautiful, and cold. Chapter 2: Tasting Immortality

3) Despite its abundance of guests, Spencer Inn felt as still as a forgotten cemetery; the kitchen lacked bustling and laughter. Reality hit John like a brick in the face. Chapter 3: Keys to Heaven

4) John never realized someone so pure of heart had ever walked the earth. Certainly such a woman never passed through the doors of his father's home. Chapter 4: Maid to Order

5) As he tried to save her immortal soul with pleas for repentance, she wove a hypnotic tale of the sinister plot against her, spurred by jealousy of her healing powers. Thus, she reeled him in, thread by thread by thread. Chapter 5: Post-Graduate Studies

6) As John had requested, Della had provided a copy of the invitation and the guest list. Many were his father's colleagues. Good. Chapter 6: Shedding the Cocoon

7)  The first lesson was inside  another tenement apartment, not far from Hewes Music Hall. The children, a girl and two boys, along with their parents, were busy rolling cigarettes. This was no small operation; as a group, they turned out thousands each week. Chapter 7: Music Halls and Garbage Cans

8)  "Look, Agnes and I get on jolly well," Henry said, "and if that isn't sufficient grounds for marriage, then what is?" Chapter 8: One for the Memory Books

9) John stopped short, wondering how the man had moved so quickly, until the stranger stood before him, leaned close, and sniffed his neck. Chapter 9: The Contract

10) John unbolted and unlocked the door, then paused, as his stomach took a sickening plunge. He hadn't yet figured out Kellen, but John knew one thing. This wasn't the way Kellen had left. Chapter 10: Crossing the Rubicon
