Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, June 20 through June 27

 Good morning!

I have just eight news and feature stories to share with you today at the bottom of this post, as well as six Thank You, Teachers stories from our special edition on May 8.

More stories will go live this weekend, especially since I am working this weekend. So be sure to check back on The Herald-News site: shawlocal.com/the-herald-news.

Before the stories I also have a list of additional updates, resources, and information. Please check them out, too.

And if you'd like to find more kindness in your life, consider this book.

And have a great Friday!

Events (or where to find the BryonySeries)

Good news, everyone! BryonySeries is officially part of the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park Theater's Independence Day celebration on July 3.

For the past two years, we provided free children's games and book giveaways as a vendor. This year, we are part of the fabric of the actual event. And we could not be more thrilled.

Details to come on Monday (along with why this event is so important to us).

Also, I hope to get back into The Book Market for a signing before surgery on July 17.

However, please read how WriteOn Joliet authors are supporting reading in Will County.

And if you prefer to help in person, please read Another Option for Helping Us Out.

And consider helping us in our efforts.

What is the BryonySeries?

BryonySeries books-in-progress

Bertrand the Mouse: We have plenty of Bertrand photos and ideas. Several are at the top of the list. That's all I'm saying for now.

The Adventures of Cornell Dyer: Cornell Dyer and the House of Horreur" (because the toymaker's last name is "Horreur.") is stalled until Timothy finished his master's degree, which he did. So now we just have to stop having family emergencies (they just keep coming) and carve some time for a Cornell breakfast (it's been three years since our last one, way, way too long). I'm having surgery July 17, so I'm hoping we can make that happen before then, just to get the process moving and give Sue Midlock ideas for art (she illustrates all the Cornell books).

Brainy Ann: The fifth book in The Girls of the BryonySeries is outlined and the first chapter is written, hurray! Jennifer Wainwright, who welcomed her first child into the world last year, is nearly done with the cover portrait. I let this book slide for other BryonySeries projects...and I'm still letting it (overall) slide, I'm afraid. But I'm hoping to finish the book this year, fingers crossed.

Jennifer designed the cover portraits for "Julie and the Too-Hard Homework," "Katie and the Big Fear," "Summer Sisters." and "Karla Joins In," as well as the frontispiece for "Lycanthropic Summer."

Other books: I am not writing a novel this year. But I have an idea for a BryonySeries Christmas anthology that I'd like to release in 2026.

Rebekah is also slowly (very, very slowly) updating the BryonySeries YouTube and Pinterest accounts. And she' catching up with Kindles for some of the BryonySeries books. So do watch for those.

For books and more information about the series, visit bryonyseries.com.

Sue's Diner: Marinated Peppers and Mushrooms

Today's recipe is featured in the BryonySeries cookbook Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles from "Bryony."

The recipe is called Marinated Peppers and Mushrooms. It was one of the items served at a potluck dinner in Bryony:

Neither Melissa nor Brian felt at ease during the unfamiliar church services in memory of their grandmother. The array of delicious food at the potluck luncheon that followed was more appealing. This was especially true for Brian, who had heaped his plate high with the following dishes.

I submitted this recipe for the cookbook (other people submitted recipes, too). When we were editing the cookbook, my oldest daughter Sarah Stegall added this note:

My mom (Denise M. Baran-Unland) first made this salad for a church dinner. We were told to stay out of the fridge, but we didn’t. Mushrooms were expensive, and she only bought them to treat the church. We figured we probably wouldn’t get any of them, so three of us pilfered the mushrooms out of this salad as a midnight snack before the newspaper routes.

Try this recipe on the Sue's Diner page on the BryonySeries website.

But try it this week. It will be gone next week. A new recipe will take it's place.

If you have any troubleshooting questions or comments, email us at bryonyseries@gmail.com.

By the way, Sue's Diner is only real in the BryonySeries world. But didn't Timothy do a great job making the page look like a real menu at a vintage diner?

BryonySeries: Beulah County Legends

Last week, I wrote an introduction to the fictional Beulah County in the ByronySeries.

Today are the seven mysteries associated with the county.

They are told through the eyes of the Munsonville's first librarian, as she reviews them over lunch during her first train ride in the early 1960s in the BryonySeries novel "House on Top of the Hill."

At noon, June Clements headed for the dining car and ordered a simple meal: a roast turkey sandwich with potato chips, crisp pickles, and hot tea. Then she pulled out her notebook and reviewed her scant research of Munsonville’s origins, legends, and scandals in order of their appearances. The more June learned, the more June questioned – and the more June wondered…

Owen Munson: Wealthy Scottish/Italian mustang runner and mill owner. Founded Munsonville in 1835 when he bought a large parcel of land from – who?

She couldn’t find a shred of evidence that Owen Munson purchased the land that he later established into a Utopian community. Nor could she find a shred of evidence of who owned this uppermost part of Michigan before Owen did. And if anyone could find elusive evidence, she could.

Strange, indeed.

June sipped and stared at the words, thinking.

Someone must have staked his claim into the land, for it escaped becoming an official territory of Michigan until after Owen’s death, when Munsonville went to Beulah County.

But who claimed it first?

John Simons:. World renowned pianist and composer, son of a highly successful industrialist banker. Raised on Fifth Avenue. Attended the once prestigious and now-defunct Wesley Music Conservatory in Connecticut. Married Bryony Marseilles, daughter of a Munsonville minister, on Christmas Eve, 1893. Bought an unknown acreage of woods, named it for himself, and built a mansion on a hill. Abruptly left Munsonville two years later after death of wife and baby in childbirth. Died at age ninety-two in 1955. Mansion and estate intact and rumored to be haunted.

And yet – why, with all the places in the world John Simons had traveled, why had John Simons gone to Munsonville? With all the women he might have married, why had he chosen the pastor’s daughter and built his home in such a remote area?

Educated, cultured music enthusiasts still appreciated Simons’ work, even though the commoners gravitated toward the current rock and roll heartthrobs.

But she had attended John Simons’ final concert in New York. He was outstanding, certainly worth the half a week’s pay the tickets cost. A John Simons ghost story could positively impact tourism – for the right tourists. Yet, time and again, Munsonville failed to acquire the estate, and the ghostly rumor persisted.

Why?

Siren Spell: Least known of the Beulah County legends, despite receiving much press shortly after it occurred. On October 15, 1894, a violent storm sprang up and drowned most of the Munsonvillian men while they fished off their boats on Lake Munson. Only one man returned,

Legend blamed the drownings on sirens, but time drowned even the legends. Why?

The Ghost of Highway 7: Yes, the most famous of the legends because it involved a lesbian ghost and notorious individuals. The lovers were Shirley Wraith, daughter of William Wraith, corrupt mayor of Thornton in the 1940s and Marjorie Mejoriak, daughter and lover of crime lord Michael Mejoriak. Shirley died instantly under a full moon on July 19, 1940, on Beulah County’s Highway 7, when the car Marjorie was driving left the roadway and plowed into a tree. Majorie’s body was found the following day in a fishing cabin in Munsonville. William Wraith subsequently bought the vacant lot at the site and named it Wraith Park. Through the years, motorists claim they’ve seen Shirley and Marjorie walking down Highway 7 toward Munsonville – especially when the moon is full. Legend says Wraith Park is exactly as it’s named: a place for wraiths to park.

Arvid Borgstrom Scandal: Arvid Borgstrom was a Scandinavian who moved to Munsonville around 1885 with his twin sons Erland and Erasmus, who were also fine fishermen. He hanged the following year, the gruesome murder of his wife Astrid Borgstrom, who had been filleted alive. Owen Munson was arrested for harboring Arvid. But those charges were dropped. Erland and Erasmus were among the villagers who drowned in the storm of October 15, 1894.

Mustang Horse Operation: Owen Munson and Clyde Fisher ran an operation that rounded up Mustangs, sent them to Fisher Farm, where they trained and then sold them to ranchers or the U.S. Army. Those that couldn’t be trained or were maimed were killed and sold for their products: leather and horse meat.

The Devil’s Moonshine: The most perplexing operation of them all. One of the barns had a distillery where Clyde prepared, and Owen distributed, “The Devil’s Moonshine” across the United States. Two of their most notorious smugglers were Douglas and Marion Copeland, a pair of newlyweds who bought Munsonville Inn with their banker parents’ money more than thirty years ago, where they remained to this day, operating the inn, instead of facing arrest and prison – even though everyone knew they lived there.

And there you have it. Seven mysteries that are still mysteries in 2025.

And we haven't even gotten into the mysteries or the notoreity that's later than the early 1960s.

For instance, in the late 1980s, the medical director at Jenson Memorial Hospital had produced convincing evidence that Dr. Rothgard had been stealing patient blood samples and experimenting with them at his home.

During the investigation, authorities discovered freezers full of blood on Dr. Rothgard’s property. The judge ruled Dr. Rothgard mentally unfit, dissolved his practice, and ordered twenty-four hour supervision.

Because of state budget cuts, no other suitable facility could offer mental health services to elderly patients than Golden Years Retirement Home in Thornton.

And that didn't turn out well.

But Dr. Rothgard is a mystery for another blog.

A Smidgen of Normal

It all started with the bathroom shelf.

With all the emergencies and complications in our lives these last couple of years, "stuff" began accumulating everywhere.

One day, I sized up the organized dissarray in my bathroom and realized I had mores stuff in there than space. I decided I needed the type of bathroom shelf that Rebekah had in her bathroom.

Rebekah latched onto the idea, and we bought in on Thursday morning while we were running errands before work. She also bought some blue plastic wicker baskets, and I took the first steps toward moving some items away from the clutter and into their new home.

It looked nice.

The change was so subtle, so small, but it rekindled a motivation I hadn't realized had shrunk until I felt that spark.

So Saturday, I caught up on some BryonySeries project.

And on Sunday, I caught up on some household ones.

By "caught up," I don't mean to imply that I'm caught up at all.

Still, I accomplished more than I ever dreamed possible when I placed those first folded washclothes into those simple baskets.

Now I can't predict the future, and I have no idea if our stormy season is coming to an end.

(Yes, I'm having surgery in a couple of weeks. Wouldn't that be great if the entire process was straightfoward as it should be?)

But it felt wonderful to do the "normal" things for two days without the ceiling and the floor collapsing on us.

Yes, that is indeed the drain sitting on the top of the shelf. Daniel removed it due to a problem six months or more months ago, and it's lived on my dresser ever since. That drain is now one step closer to returning to its "normal" place, too.

Seriously, several of us in the family were talking about how jumping from big problem to big problem has them on edge, and they've come to dread the weekends when "something" always seems to happen.

Nothing happened this weekend except the weekend. That really felt good.

And that gives me hope.

Happy Monday!

Another Option for Helping Out

On June 5, I posted this blog: "Help Us Promote Reading in Will County this Summer."

The blog explained how WriteOn Joliet will be giving away approximately 300 books for adults and children (all written by WriteOn Joliet authors) on August 2 at Kidz Fest in downtown Joliet

This blog also provided links to the books we will distribute, along with a link to all the BryonySeries books, for anyone interested in making our gift a larger gift.

Here is another way to help, one that also supports a small business.

BryonySeries has a display of its books near the front door at The Book Market in Crest Hill.

Simply purchase one or more books and leave the book(s) at the counter.

The Book Market receives a portion of the sale and families at Kidz Fest receive the books.

To be clear, we have already ordered our 300 books.

But with your help, we can give away 301 books.

And if you'd like to leave a note of encouragment with the book, we can make sure the recipient receives that, too.

Sue's Diner: Fish Salad

Here is an unusual salad to try now that warm weather has returned and temperatures are predicted to soar this weekend.

This recipe for fish salad is slightly modified from the Bohemian-American Cookbook by Marie Rosicky, published by the Automatic Printing Company (www.autoprintomaha.com).

The version of the cookbook I had was published more than one hundred years ago. The Automatic Publishing Company is still publishing it today. The recipe is used with written permission.

This recipe for fish salad also appears in the BryonySeries cookbook "Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles from "Bryony."

Background on where this week's recipe falls in the BryonySeries novel Bryony:

Although Simons Mansion hosted most of Munsonville’s festivities, the villagers reciprocated one summer with a celebration in honor of John and Bryony Simons, with John providing the entertainment. A torn dress kept Melissa away from the refreshment table, but, except for the cake, we doubt she would have eaten anything from it, anyway.

You can try the recipe for fish salad on the Sue's Diner page on the BryonySeries website

But try the recipe this week. It will be gone some time next week. A new recipe will take it's place.

By the way, Sue's Diner is only real in the BryonySeries world. But didn't Timothy do a great job making the page look like a real menu at a vintage diner?

Here is the full diner page: bryonyseries.com/sue-s-diner. You can't really order, of course (wouldn't it be great if you could?).

BryonySeries: Beulah County

In the early days of this blog, I wrote about various elements of the BryonySeries: defining them, sharing the inspiration behind them, etc., since the series is the primary driver of the blog.

Over time, I wrote less about these elements, so now I'm correcting that with weekly (overall) posts on these elements. You can find past blogs under the tag "About the BryonySeries."

This week's post is short: a definition of Beulah County and an even shorter on why Beulah County is significant.

Enjoy! :)

Beulah County: A fictional county in Northern Michigan, that encompasses Thornton (city), Shelby (tourist village), Jenson (college town), and Munsonville (fishing village). Mentioned in “House on Top of the Hill.”

That's according to the BryonySeries guidebook "Welcome to Munsonville: The People, Places and Things of the BryonySeries."

But Beulah County by name also appears in the BryonySeries Ruthless trilogy by Ed Calkins, Steward of Tara: "Ruthless," "The Fifth," and "Recovering Ruthless."

Here is the encyclopedia-style entry on Munsonville.

But what really makes Beulah County interesting are the seven mysteries surrounding it.

We'll explore those next Tuesday.

You Cannot Make This Up

So the "fun" for Lucas' graduation weekend probably started when we decided I should apply for an expeditated passport since I couild not get an appointment for a Real ID.

Naturally I could not find any copies of my birth certificate. So my mother, who also lives in North Carolina, found a copy from 1967 and overnighted it to me in package so sealed for safety we had trouble opening it ourselves.

We spent the money for the expeditation and breathed a sigh of relief.

In the meantime, here's what this past week has looked like across the family, the Illiniois family and the North Carolina family: COVID, two ER trips for two different family members (including me; the barium in the photo is mine), an ER plumbing issue, power outage in ninety-three degrees, a romantic breakup, missing carryon bag with medication that had to be checked (found later destroyed), another illness overnight that prevented a grandparent from attending graduation, and one person in North Carolina that overslept and missed the graduation altogether.

Then we had trouble loading the virtual link and missed Lucas walking in (but we were jubilantly present when he received his diploma and watched him walk out as new graduate of the Class of 2025.

So this afternoon, we will have a Zoom celebration, and I will read Lucas my "Message to the Class of 2020," which I read to my two nieces at our Zoom celebration of their high school and college graduations in May 2020, because these same sentiments apply.

The one thing that did work out for us this week is that we all commiserated together.

This above list of "experiences" doesn't even make believable fiction. But it's all true, and it all happened to us over these past few days.

But those are the key words: "we" and "us."

Whenever we go through these trials, we remind each other that some people don't have "we" and "us."

In fact, WE see it all the time in the ER: people who are there alone, without "we" and "us."

Which is worse? Being alone and having everything go right and according to plan? Or having everything go wrong but having it all go wrong with togetherness?

While you're mulling on that question, you've probably missed Chekhov's gun.

Well, that's because I'm missing it, too.

I'm referring to the "expedited" passport.

I received an email an hour ago. It should be here on Wednesday.

Happy Monday!

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, June 7 through June 13

Good morning!

I have just fifteen news and feature stories to share with you today at the bottom of this post, as well as six Thank You, Teachers stories from our special edition on May 8.

More stories will go live this weekend.

I have no events booked over the next week or so since I was supposed to be out-of-town this weekendm for Lucas' graduation.

However, please read how WriteOn Joliet authors are supporting reading in Will County.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Sue's Diner is a fictional restaurant in the fictional Munsonville that only exists in the BryonySeries.

Each Wednesday, we post a new recipe. The recipe is either featured in one of our cookbooks, will be featured in an upcoming cookbook, or is just an "extra" we want to share with you.

Check out the recipe here.

WRITERS

If you're a writer anywhere in the world, you're welcome to join WriteOn Joliet's Facebook pageWe're based in Joliet, Illinois, but we love to meet and interact with writers outside our area, too.

If you'd like to officially join WriteOn Joliet, we have two tiers of dues and two ways to attend meetings. We also have a marketing arm that's getting longer every year. Check us out at writeonjoliet.com.

I also suggest this book: Little Book of Revision: A Checklist for Fiction Writers. It's exactly as it says. Each page some with one suggestion for revision. The rest of the page is blank, so you can add your own notes. All proceeds benefit WriteOn Joliet.

If you need editing or help with self-publishing, check out dmbaranunland.com.

ARTISTS

If you need an artist for a project, I offer these recommendations.

NEWSLETTERS

Sign up for The Munsonville Times by emailing us at bryonyseries@gmail.com. The newsletter still isn't official yet, so we don't have an actual link on the website - but we are working on it!

SOCIAL MEDIA

Daily updates: I haven't posted anything on Twitter/X (except a daily Bible verse) since September I can no longer schedule posts in advance. I'm not sure yet how to manage the account without that option. But you're welcome to follow me at @Denise_Unland61.

BryonySeries stuff: I used to curated content relating to the BryonySeries on Twitter/X at @BryonySeries and still post assorted related content at facebook.com/BryonySeriesyoutube.com/user/BryonySeries, and themes of each book in the BryonySeries at pinterest.com/bryonyseries.

Again, not sure yet about the direction of the BryonySeries Twitter/X account. Still mulling that over.

And of course, please follow the adventures of Bertrand the Mouse on Instagram at bertrand_bryonyseries.
