Codfish (a breakfast recipe)

As much as Melissa enjoyed playing Bryony, she found some of Munsonville’s Victorian foods difficult to stomach, especially when they appeared on her breakfast tray. Here is one of the recipes for Melissa’s initial breakfasts at Simons Mansion (I can't imagine), adapted from Miss Beecher’s domestic receiptbook: designed as a supplement to her Treatise on domestic economy.


Codfish

Boiled potatoes, mashed
Codfish, cooked and mashed
Cream or milk
Lard
Pepper


Mix potatoes and fish together, adding some cream or milk, and a little pepper, make them into round cakes an inch thick, and fry them in fresh lard.
