Decorate a FREE BryonySeries Crocheted Pumpkin at The Book Market

Come visit the BryonySeries "Pumpkin Patch" at The Book Market in Crest Hill, with an array of pumpkins ready for decorating!

Here's how it works.

Select one of our Bertrand the Mouse-approved, Cindy-created Ribbit-Ribbit pumpkin.

And then decorate it in the store with sticky back felt shapes and designs, which are divided by shape and design and placed in the plastic Jack-o-lanterns next to the pumpkins.

Leave your pumpkin on the table, so customers can vote "by number." (The pumpkins are numbered).

Write the number of your favorite pumpkin on a sticky note, fold the note in half, and drop it in to the bucket.

Voting ends shortly before 1:30 p.m. October 25 (a the conclusion of the BryonySeries pre-Halloween Book Party), upon which time the notes will be counted and a suprise bookish "prize" will be awarded and all pumpkins may go home.

All pumpkins are free to choose, free to decorate, while supplies last. Decorated pumpkins have an approximate retail value of $25, so this is a free fun way to bring personalized autumn decor into your home.

Enjoy "FAME" this Saturday!

The Joliet Public Library's Digital Media Studio is hosting its first FAME event on Saturday.

This artist market and showcase will feature a wide array of art and artists, along with live performances and demonstrations throughout the day on all three levels of the library.

I'll be there representing both BryonySeries and WriteOn Joliet (WriteOn Joliet has been a library partner since 2013) and will be selling both BryonySeries books and WriteOn Joliet anthologies, as well as books authored by my former co-leader Tom Hernandez, who died from brain cancer in 2024.

I'll also be hosting a comic book panel from 12:30 to 1 p.m.

And then I'll be chatting and reading some readings from 3:30 to 4 p.m.

Finally, my booth will also have information about the BryonySeries, WriteOn Joliet, and B.L.O.C.K.S., which is the new umbrella group of BryonySeries.

Stop out, pop in, and be entertained!

FAME will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Joliet Publcio Library, 150 N. Ottawa St. in Joliet.

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Sept. 19 through Sept. 26

 Good morning!

For my second full-time back-to-work week, I have eighteen (yes, eighteen; I even did some of the photography) stories online to share with you today - and more stories will go live over the weekend, since I'm working the weekend.

So please check back at shawlocal.com/the-herald-news.

To see the stories that ran in print this week and aren't online yet, click on the e-edition option at the top of The Herald-News website.

Before the stories, I also have a list of additional updates, resources, and information. Please check them out, too.

And if you'd like to find more kindness in your life, consider this book.

And have a great Friday!

That's because the boys will be preparing and serving something yummy from "Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles from 'Bryony,'" which is a permanent fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties. WriteOn Joliet will also be selling its 2025 anthology, along with all other anthologies from 2017 onward, including its holiday anthology and "cheetah" anthology.

What is the BryonySeries?

For more information on the developing "parent brand" that is removing some of the heavy marketing lifting from me, visit bryonyseries.com/blocks.

BryonySeries books-in-progress

Bertrand the Mouse: We have plenty of Bertrand photos and ideas. Several are at the top of the list. At some point, we will assemble and release some more.

The Adventures of Cornell Dyer: Cornell Dyer and the House of Horreur" (because the toymaker's last name is "Horreur.") is stalled until Timothy finished his master's degree, which he did. So now we just have to stop having family emergencies (they just keep coming) and carve some time for a Cornell breakfast (it's been three years since our last one, way, way too long). I'm had surgery July 17 and that further stalled the process. But I'd love to give Sue Midlock ideas for art (she illustrates all the Cornell books), especially since she's actually eager to get drawing.

Brainy Ann: The fifth book in The Girls of the BryonySeries is outlined and the first chapter is written, hurray! Jennifer Wainwright, who welcomed her first child into the world last year, is nearly done with the cover portrait. I let this book slide for other BryonySeries projects...and I'm still letting it (overall) slide, I'm afraid. But I'm hoping we release it early 2026.

Jennifer designed the cover portraits for "Julie and the Too-Hard Homework," "Katie and the Big Fear," "Summer Sisters." and "Karla Joins In," as well as the frontispiece for "Lycanthropic Summer."

Other books: I am not writing a novel this year. But I have an idea for a BryonySeries Christmas anthology that I'd like to release in 2026.

Rebekah is also slowly (very, very slowly) updating the BryonySeries YouTube and Pinterest accounts. And she' catching up with Kindles for some of the BryonySeries books. So do watch for those.

For books and more information about the series, visit bryonyseries.com.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Sue's Diner is a fictional restaurant in the fictional Munsonville that only exists in the BryonySeries.

Each Wednesday, we post a new recipe. The recipe is either featured in one of our cookbooks, will be featured in an upcoming cookbook, or is just an "extra" we want to share with you.

Check out the weekly recipe here.

WRITERS

If you're a writer anywhere in the world, you're welcome to join WriteOn Joliet's Facebook pageWe're based in Joliet, Illinois, but we love to meet and interact with writers outside our area, too.

If you'd like to officially join WriteOn Joliet, we have two tiers of dues and two ways to attend meetings. We also have a marketing arm that's getting longer every year. Check us out at writeonjoliet.com.

I also suggest this book: Little Book of Revision: A Checklist for Fiction Writers. It's exactly as it says. Each page some with one suggestion for revision. The rest of the page is blank, so you can add your own notes. All proceeds benefit WriteOn Joliet.

If you need editing or help with self-publishing, check out dmbaranunland.com.

Daily updates: I haven't posted anything on Twitter/X (except a daily Bible verse) since September I can no longer schedule posts in advance. I'm not sure yet how to manage the account without that option. But you're welcome to follow me at @Denise_Unland61.

BryonySeries stuff: I used to curated content relating to the BryonySeries on Twitter/X at @BryonySeries and still post assorted related content at facebook.com/BryonySeriesyoutube.com/user/BryonySeries, and themes of each book in the BryonySeries at pinterest.com/bryonyseries.

BryonySeries "Jump Into Fall" Book Party

Good morning!

It's been a busy, busy, busy week of work and physical therapy - and this blog will be the shortest and the simplest of nearly all the blogs since I began it on Aug. 1, 2010.

I am looking forward to a lowkey, fun-filled party on Saturday.

Details are on the flyer and on our "pumpkin patch" blog.

Pleaaw join us!

Sue's Diner: Vampire Milkshakes

It's the time of year when we walk among several seasons: autumn in the morning, summer in the afternoon, and a bit Halloween deocrating in the evening.

That's why this recipe for Vampire Milkshakes is perfect for this week.

They are also quick and easy to make: mix, blend, and drink! That leaves plenty of time to hang those decorations and walk among the autumn colors.

This recipe does not appear in any of the BryonySeries cookbooks

However, you may try this recipe on the Sue's Diner page on the BryonySeries website.

But try the recipe this week. It will be gone some time next week. A new recipe will take it's place.

If you have any troubleshooting questions or comments, email us at bryonyseries@gmail.com.

By the way, Sue's Diner is only real in the BryonySeries world. But didn't Timothy do a great job making the page look like a real menu at a vintage diner?

Here is the full diner page: bryonyseries.com/sue-s-diner. You can't really order, of course (wouldn't it be great if you could?).

A Wisp of a New BryonySeries Novel

"I think you have one more novel in you."

Thus Ed Calkins, Steward of Tara, has said to me more than once.

At first I thought his comments were wishful thinking on his part.

But he may be right.

Maybe.

A very small wisp of an idea started floating arond my brain a few weeks ago. But with so many other projects (some other book projects, some not) filling front and back burners, the wisp can just float untended for a while.

OK, maybe I'll throw it a few kibbles now and then, just to se if the idea is hungry and wants to grow.

I'm strangely excited at the thought of writing another novel, which is turning into "I probably will" as I write these words.

And I'm already musing, "Standalone?" "New trilogy?"

Seriously. (shaking head at myself).

That's great news for the small audience that love my books.

And that's great news for me, too.

For I've spent some of the best thousands of hours in my life taking half-formed ideas out of my imagination and shaping them onto the page.

If you're an artist of any kind (and I think anyone who creates anything is an artist) you'll understand.

Happy Tuesday!

Decorate a Pumpkin at the BryonySeries "Pumpkin Patch"

The BryonySeries first "Pumpkin Patch" is installed at The Book Market in Crest Hill, with a dozen pumpkins ready for decorating!

September 27, upon which time the notes will be counted and a suprise bookish "prize" will be awarded.

Make sure your fingers "jump" into our leaf pile for a BryonySeries book discount.

Pull a leaf, take it to the counter, and Jan will look up your discount.

You can then take it or "leaf" it.

All pumpkins are free to choose, free to decorate, while supplies last.

You may take your pumpkin home anytime after September 27.

Or you may "leaf" your pumpkin at The Book Market as a gift to become part of the store's autumn decor. Just let Jan Staley, the owner, know.

For more fun, plan to pop into the BryonySeries "Jump Into Fall" book party, where we will announce the winner, give out free chef-made packaged werewolf bark, and do spontaneous "turn the leaf" book readings.

Happy Monday!

Ever Decorate a Crocheted Pumpkin?

Seriously: HAVE you ever decorated a crocheted pumpkin?

Well, here's your chance!

BryonySeries is hosting a lowkey "Jump Into Fall" Book Party from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Saturday, September 27, at The Book Market in Crest Hill.

BUT - in the days leading up to the event, we are hosting a pumpkin decorating contest.

EXCEPT - those pumpkins are crocheted (in honor of Bertrand the Mouse) by Cindy as part of her Ribbit-Ribbits line.

We will offer these FREE crocheted pumpkins and decorating supplies for you to accessorie and personalize your pumpkin in the store on a first-come, first serve, basis (while pumpkins are available; supply will be limited).

Our soft little "pumpkin patch" should be ready to go this weekend.

HOWEVER - you must leave your decorated pumpkin on display at The Book Market until after the Sept. 27 party.

During the week, patrons may vote for their favorite pumpkins.

The person with the pumpkin with the most votes (as counted by us during the party) will receive a BryonySeries prize.

Afterwards, all decorators may take their pumpkins home to enjoy during the autumn season.

Keep scrolling for the rest of the details.

Patrons may also pull a BryonySeries "leaf deal" from our leaf pile all next week and during the event.

We will have autumn crocheted mice for purchase.

During the party, we will also have free chef-created werewolf bark (while supplies last) and "turn the leaves" author readings.

We hope this helps you line up your cooler weather reads!

Sue's Diner: “World Famous” Potato Salad

Today's recipe was submitted by Lori Dodd more than a dozen years ago and is featured in the BryonySeries cookbook Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles from "Bryony."

With the mid-summer-like weather in the Midwest right now, this recipe is a perfect side dish for hot weather meals.

Here is its Bryony reference.

A family bike ride in the woods followed by an autumn picnic is the perfect opportunity for Melissa to reflect on her recent encounter with vampires. Nothing can distract her, not a game of croquet, a grilled hot dog, or her mother’s delicious potato salad, which tasted surprisingly like this one.

We think Lori's "World Famous" potato salad recipe is perfect for indoor or outdoor summer meals.

Try this recipe on the Sue's Diner page on the BryonySeries website.

But try it this week. It will be gone next week. A new recipe will take it's place.

If you have any troubleshooting questions or comments, email us at bryonyseries@gmail.com.

Note from Lori Dodd: “The recipe is a very basic, simple recipe, but sometimes they are the best! This is my ‘tried and true’ recipe that I always use, but feel free to play around with it and make it your own.”

By the way, Sue's Diner is only real in the BryonySeries world. But didn't Timothy do a great job making the page look like a real menu at a vintage diner?

Here is the full diner page: bryonyseries.com/sue-s-diner.

BryonySeries: Original "Drop of Blood" Vampire Trilogy

On one of the first days of 1985, I lay on the couch trying to combat pregnancy nausea with a book of classic vampirestories.

My two-year-old and eight-month-old were napping at the same time, a highly unusual occurrence. I laid the book upside down on my chest and decided to write a gothicy-style vampire novel.

Now, I had never written a novel, only short stories and one novella. Nor had I even written much fiction since my junior high school days, thanks to a series of illnesses in high school and a killer schedule in college. Since becoming a parent, I had not even read much fiction. I preferred the Bible, as well as books on pregnancy, childbirth, Cesarean sections (I've had six total), home birth (I've had none), breastfeeding (infants, toddlers, through pregnancy, and tandem), Christian parenting, and homeschooling.

Yet, by the time the kiddies had awakened, and I was soaping washcloths for diaper changes (Yes, I used cloth diapers, by choice), I had the rudiments of s story--a teenage girl falls in love with a vampire she meets by a remote lake--flowing through my mind.

Of course, the main character would be Melissa. That had been my name of choice for numerous childhood stories. Finally, Melissa would star in her "official" story. I decided to set her story in 1972 (I later changed it to 1975 simply because I wanted Halloween on a Friday) to give expansion room to the story. It was a slow growth.

The raising of six, lively, breastfed, homeschooled children left little time for writing. Drafts attempted in locked, toddler-proofed rooms offered little concentration. Those adorable little people who shared the space were more interested in tapping typewriting keys than playing with all the lovely, educational toys strewn on the floor. Many, many deleted scenes found their home in some landfill.

Yet, while other stories ideas have come and gone, this particular one would not go away. Finally, in 2007, I decided to write it as a novella for the seventeenth birthday of one of my sons. I figured it could write it in a weekend. I was wrong.

So in January 2008, I tackled the novel in earnest. At some point, I realized the story was too large for one book; it would need a sequel. And far too many sequels (in my opinion) aren't that good. And I was struggling to write one book without the specter of a second looming before me.

Not until I had outlined the sequel and was actively writing it did I realize the story was actually a trilogy. And that was a real problem (to me) because I had enough material for two books but not three.

So I paused writing the second until (for consistency's sake), I had an outline for the third. And, honestly, without integrating Ed Calkins as a character into the first novel (when it was only a first novel), that third novel would would never have happened, at least not in the wonderful directions it veered.

The rest of my ideas for the rest of the BryonySeries books derived from writing another book.

While writing the first novel, the companion cookbook derived from all the fun food references, the mentoring subplot, and my desire to give back.

The idea for the bonus short story came from my publicist, who wanted me to have something to read at pre-publication events.

While writing the first novel, Sarah had the idea for Girls of the BryonySeries subseries.

While writing the second novel, I had the idea for The Adventures of Cornell Dyer subseries.

While writing the third novel, Sarah had the idea for the Bertrand the Mouse subseries.

And while editing the first novel while drafting the second, I had the idea for the Before The Blood prequel and the werewolf story.

And after I published all five of those volumes, I had the idea for the Limbo trilogy.

And while writing the werewolf story, I had the idea for the "A Year of Shadows" novelette.

Funny how that happens, isn't it? The entire series really took on the life of its namesake noxious weed, which can easily overtake healthy vegetation..

Now although I've previously said I've likely written my last novel, a vague, wispy shadow of another BryonySeries story is already lurking in the back of my mind.

Ed thinks I have a another novel inside of me.

He may be right.

The original BryonySeries "drop of blood trilogy

These books for young adults and older below originate from the expansion of the initial idea and revolve around the idea of "a drop of blood, a deceptive fantasy.

In addition to the trilogy, this initial subseries has a bonus short story and companion cookbook featuring recipes for all the food references in "Bryony," which is a permanent fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties.

Bryony

After her father’s sudden death, seventeen-year-old Melissa Marchellis moves onto the former estate of nineteenth century composer and pianist John Simons, where a mysterious mist stalks her, ghostly piano music plays in her bedroom, and visions of John Simons’ young wife Bryony, who died in childbirth, invade her dreams. Those dreams, Melissa discovers, are simply a distraction for the midnight feedings of John Simons, now a vampire.

So, John proposes a trade: Melissa may visit the past as Bryony in exchange for minute samples of her blood to neutralize his vampire state. For a time, Melissa happily seesaws between her adolescent routine of school, slumber parties, and cute boys to dancing at balls, attending formal dinner parties, and hosting garden fetes.

But fantasy and reality blur when her eccentric, middle-aged English teacher penetrates her dreams as Melissa’s dashing, young vampire chaperone; her brother Brian adopts a peculiar stray cat after a friend disappears in a midnight exploration of the dilapidated mansion; and another girl with a similar vampire pact is gruesomely murdered.

Caught between the danger of her agreement and her escalating infatuation with John Simons, Melissa contends with other vampires and their agendas, while struggling with her feelings for an undead musician.

Visage

While grieving the abrupt end of her blood bargain with nineteenth century pianist John Simons, eighteen-year-old Melissa Marchellis packs sensible goals for her life and marches off to college, where her obsession flings her into a relationship with a music professor, a man with a shady reputation and an uncanny resemblance to John.

Meanwhile, Melissa’s peer support crumbles, as her friends make other choices for their lives. Shelly and Laura attend out of town schools. Ann forsakes her wealthy ambitions for a Munsonville boy. Julie is preoccupied with studying and dating a nice, but dull, psychology major. Katie runs away with an aging medicine man.

Melissa quickly cycles from pursuer to victim when the professor develops a mysterious illness requiring unusual treatments; neighborhood pets disappear at alarming rates; and she begins caring for a child with a number of disturbing qualities: a voracious appetite, abhorrence for meat, luxurious red hair that defies trimming, extreme intelligence, and musical abilities beyond its tender years.

As her world unravels, Melissa glimpses the horrifying truth beneath her choices. Will Melissa use that knowledge to finally break free from Bryony’s past?

Staked!

For seventeen-year-old John-Peter Simotes, prodigy of a college music professor that died from a mysterious illness and was staked by his best friend’s vampire-slayer father, growing up in a remote fishing village means tolerating an English teacher mother, enduring a Bible-thumping grandfather, working for a newspaper delivery uncle and a funeral director stepfather, playing with astral projection, and waiting for the right opportunity to rescue the princess trapped in a bedroom mirror.

So when John-Peter accidentally discovers a diary written by his deceased great-grandmother, revealing her claims that a famous nineteenth century pianist and composer with a connection to the village and a resemblance to the music professor was actually a vampire, he and his best friend, Karla Dyer, decide to resurrect the vampire to prove her theory.

But experiments with magic and immortality do more than test the information set forth by a mentally unstable woman. They unlock the truth about John-Peter’s real identity, the evil motives of people he trusts, and the mission upon which he must embark to save them all.

Snowbell

While visiting an out of state friend, a snobbish teen decides to show up the locals by disproving their cherished ghost stories. However, her calculated prank becomes a terrifying night in a dilapidated mansion and a desperate wish that the legends were true.

Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles from "Bryony"

In Denise M. Baran-Unland's young adult vampire novel, Bryony, seventeen-year-old Melissa Marchellis trades her blood with a Victorian vampire for a trip back into time as his wife, Bryony.

Yet, as Melissa zig-zags between 1975 and the late 1890's, she encounters plenty of food. These range from the familiar dishes that grace her family's dinner and holiday tables to unfamiliar Victorian fare: beef tongue, stuffed pigeons, and boiled calves head.

The recipes included in this collection reflect the culture of both time periods to give the reader an insight into the world of "Bryony."

Whether you read this cookbook to enhance the story's enjoyment or for menu ideas, may you thoroughly delight in each "bite and nibble."
