Coffee With Bertrand the Mouse

Good morning!

I found an old coffee photo of Bertrand the Mouse the other day, which made me think of all the coffee memories we've made together.

I'm sharing seven with you this morning, with the last photo also featuring Uncle Barty. I hope you enjoy them.

Happy Monday!

Will You Take This Painting Home on Calkins Day?

As part of the BryonySeries Calkins Day (Feb. 13) celebration, we are giving away this 10-inch by 8-inch original acrylic painting, which Ed's wife Nancy Calkins painted for this occasion.

The painting has a retail value of $75, according to Nancy Calkins, who is an accomplished artist and retired art teacher.

Simply pop into The Book Market between Tuesday and Calkins Day, write your name on one of our sticky notes, and drop it into the BryonySeries container. We will draw the winner during the Calkins Day celebration.

Winner MUST be present to receive the painting. If the winner is not present, we will draw another name.

Calkins Day will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at The Book Market in Crest Hill.

The drop-in celebration will include free food (including pizza), a chance to win the original acrylic waterscape painted by Ed’s wife Nancy Calkins (an accomplished artist and retired art teacher), and the opportunity to purchase books authored by Ed and books in which Ed appears as a character.

For more information about Ed Calkins, including why we celebrate Calkins Day (and why you should, too) and how to celebrate Calkins Day, visit this post.

Happy Saturday!

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Jan. 25 to Jan. 31

 Good morning!

I have thirteen feature stories to share with you today at the bottom of this post, with more stories going live this weekend. So be sure to check back on The Herald-News site: shawlocal.com/the-herald-news.

Before the stories I also have a list of additional updates, resources, and information. Please check them out, too.

Also, if you live in the Will County, Illinois area, consider checking out WriteOn Joliet's anthology display at The Book Market in Crest Hill (before it comes down this weekend ) - and purchasing one (or two) to add to your winter reading list.

And if you'd like to find more kindness in your life, consider this book.

And have a great Friday!

Event Updates

Calkins Day 2025 will take place at 6 p.m. Feb. 13 at The Book Market in Crest Hill.

Copies of Ed Calkins, Steward of Tara's third book in his Ruthless trilogy: "Recovering Ruthless will be launched at this event.

Ed's first book is "Ruthless," his second is "The Fifth," and he is also the author of "Denise Unland's Irish Genealogy."

Unless we wind up with a delivery issue, we will have copies for our annual Calkins Day celebration on February 13.

Here is everything you need to know to celebrate the man, the myth, and the author that is Ed Calkins and is not-quite-so-famous Calkins Day.

BryonySeries books-in-progress

House on Top of the Hill: Third book in the BryonySeries Limbo trilogy, and the book is now live on Amazon and already has its first organic review. Copies are also available at The Book Market. And check out this first review on Amazon.

The Adventures of Cornell Dyer: Timothy and Daniel are super busy with school on top of work (and plenty of work-related traveling). But Sue Midlock is already hard at work with the cover for the next book that involves a toymaker: "Cornell Dyer and the House of Horreur" (because the toymaker's last name is "Horreur."). Timothy and I have tentatively agreed to a "Cornell" breakfast when he's off school and work during the holidays. Here's hoping! (we are looooong over due). But it was postponed AGAIN because I got sick (grumble). So...soon?

I also outlined a "bonus" book that is intended for distribution at Bicentennial's "Ye Olde Mayfest" event in 2025. Here is a recap of the 2024 event.

Brainy Ann: The fifth book in The Girls of the BryonySeries is outlined and the first chapter is written, hurray! Jennifer Wainwright, who welcomed her first child into the world in April, is nearly done with the cover portrait. I let this book slide for other BryonySeries projects. But I'll return to this book in early 2025.

Jennifer designed the cover portraits for "Julie and the Too-Hard Homework," "Katie and the Big Fear," "Summer Sisters." and "Karla Joins In," as well as the frontispiece for "Lycanthropic Summer."

Rebekah is also slowly (very, very slowly) updating the BryonySeries YouTube and Pinterest accounts. And she' catching up with Kindles for some of the BryonySeries books. So do watch for those.

For books and more information about the series, visit bryonyseries.com.

Sue's Diner: Valentine Salad

Show someone you care about him or her this Valentine's Day (or before...or after) by serving up a healthy, heart-shaped salad.

This recipe not featured in any of the BryonySeries cookbooks, including Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles from "Bryony," which is a permanent fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties and features all the recipes referenced in the novel Bryony

However, you can try this recipe for Valentine Salad on the Sue's Diner page on the BryonySeries website.

But try the recipe this week. It will be gone next week. A new recipe will take it's place.

"The Playwright"

WriteOn Joliet charter member Duanne Walton has a delightful habit of gifting with delightful items.

Like this "werewolf" candle from Mythology Candles that I only burn a little at a time because when it's gone, it's gone.

And this rocking "coffee bar man" that sits on my home coffee bar.

This Christmas, Duanne gifted me with this a different scent from Mythology Candles.

The scent surprised me, because I didn't know this was a scent that could be bottled. (yes, you have to scroll for it).

The scent is called "The Playwright" and a product description is provided on the Mythology Candles website.

I must say the scent lives up to its hype.

Duanne gave this candle to me on December 12, at WriteOn Joliet's member-only holiday party at The Curator's Cafe in Joliet. And I just lit it for the first time.

So why did I wait until now to light it?

Because WriteOn Joliet has just entered its third radio play season and just had our very first table reading last Thursday at The Book Market in Crest Hill

Because ten members of WriteOn Joliet will explore various aspects of heroism in original radio-style stories and poems at 7 p.m. April 25 and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. April 26  at the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park and Theatre.

Authors and performers are Denise M. Baran-Unland, Mauverneen Blevins, Edward Calkins, Holly Coop, Steve Cordin, Diana Estell, Cean Magosky, Colleen H. Robbins, Jenny Russ and Duanne Walton.

Director is Anne Magosky.

Production assistant is Rebekah Baran.

Admission will be just $5.

So with the success of our 2023 radio play and the 2024 radio play behind us, we ten will spend the next few months editing, casting, rehearsing, and taking these seemingly unrelated pieces - written individually, at different times in our lives, and at the behest of our particular inspirations - and transforming them into a cohesive performance you will not want to miss.

And I wanted this candle flame to not only inspire me with my BryonySeries contribution to the play and not just with the mechanics of this play, or of how far we ten have come as individual writers, but to...

...also remind me of how far we have come in learning to support each other and collaborate with each other to bring our unique and separate works together to weave together a dynamic show we hope you don't miss.

A Harvest of Words

A quick internet search of the topic "crafts from old books" will pull up hundreds of ideas, for crafty people eager to repurpose old books to create something new...like this pumpkin below.

The activities director at The Timbers of Shorewood made these for the WriteOn Joliet members who participated in the third "Meet the Author" event in November.

The "Meet the Author" event has become a yearly opportunity for The Timbers book club to enjoy the prose and poetry by WriteOn Joliet authors and for the authors to enjoy reading to a rapt audience from anthologies that are donated to the club that evening.

The Timbers also hosted WriteOn Joliet in 2022 and 2023.

To make these pumpkins, The Timbers' activities director took on of WriteOn's anthology that had become coffee-stained from many readings at The Timbers.

Its stem was fashioned from the anthology cover.

And (in my pumpkin), the flesh was formed from words I'd written, from excerpts from BryonySeries novels that I'd shared for this particular anthology.

I found it intriguing that words that began in our imaginations eventually found their way onto pages through many hours of work, which then found their way into the hands of readers for many hours of reading, where one reader also then spent hours reforming them into another form of artistic expression, which then returned to the authors to enjoy.

For me, this shows the malleableness of art and its ability to be explored, reshaped, and enjoyed in many forms.

Maybe it's something to consider as we make our unique way in the world today.

Happy Monday!

"Recovering Ruthless" by Ed Calkins, Steward of Tara

We are happy to announce that copies of "Recovering Ruthless," the latest novel in the BryonySeries "Ruthless" trilogy by Ed Calkins, Steward of Tara, will be available for purchase on Calkins Day.

Calkins Day 2025 will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 13 at The Book Market in Crest Hill.

If you are unfamiliar with Calkins Day (you shouldn't be) or if you need a refresher on this holiday, be sure you read this post, which will also familiarize you with Ed's other books and the books in which he appears as himself as a character.

Below is the synopsis for "Recovering Ruthless." If you're looking for an outrageous trilogy of literary nonsense (think Lewis Carroll for adults) that is also quite a bit of "heart" among its pages, the Ruthless series is for you.

Happy Saturday!

If you knew your future, would it help at all?

If you are a dyslexic vampire trying to recover your sanity or a hypnotized imp trying to recover humanity, then maybe not. Maybe clinging to ruthlessness is all that can be done.

Because time in Munsonville never really works the way it should.

Sheriff Matt and his deputy Marsha are reunited after more than a decade of mystical calendar misunderstanding. It will take all they have to maintain order.

What of the book on the Sheriff’ Matt’s desk? Although the novel was rewritten at some time in the future, the story will happen in the next two months.

What of the new girl – ten-year-old Beth – and her shoplifting ways?

And what will it take for an alcoholic to quit drinking, a compulsive gambler to quit betting, a vampire to quit biting, a farm to reemerge, a leprechaun to stay married, and an ancient order to reestablish?

This is the story of a ruthless recovery.

Sue's Diner: Vampire Meatballs

January weather is in full force in my part of the world - and Valentine's Day is less than a month away.

So it's a perfect time to make and serve vampire meatballs, either as an appetizer or a main dish.

Not only are they delicious, they won't scare anyone away. You can eat them with the lights turned on. And you don't have to be a fan of vampires to enjoy them.

However, you can try this recipe for vampire meatballs on the Sue's Diner page on the BryonySeries website.

"It Is a Privilege to Serve"

In "Recovering Ruthless," by Ed Calkins, Steward of Tara, a character's character is being tested and developed, and she is given a phrase to often repeat: "It is a privilege to serve."

I remember when one of the initial organizer's of Joliet's first M:LK Day of Service reached out to me more than a dozen years ago about the event, a first for the area.

Although I'd written many stories through the years about Joliet's MLK Day of Service, I've never been blessed enough to see part of it.

Well, today is the day. And "it's a privilege to serve" keep echoing through my head this morning.

That's a good place to end today's blog, I think, isn't it?

"It's a privilege to serve."

Save the Date: Calkins Day 2025

Calkins Day (Feb. 13) is the BryonySeries' official holiday. It's a day to celebrate laughter, imagination, generosity, and the birthday of Ed Calkins, Steward of Tara: man, myth, and author.

And we are inviting you to that celebration from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at The Book Market in Crest Hill.

The drop-in celebration will include free food (including pizza), a chance to win an original acrylic waterscape painted by Ed’s wife Nancy Calkins (an accomplished artist and retired art teacher), and the opportunity to purchase books authored by Ed and books in which Ed appears as a character.

One of those books will include “Recovering Ruthless,” the third book in the outrageous, literary nonsense BryonySeries Ruthless series, all authored by Ed Calkins, Steward of Tara.

The first book is simply called “Ruthless.” The second book is titled “The Fifth.”

Ed also wrote my Irish genealogy. (I’m not Irish).

Ed also appears as himself (as in himself, a ruthless dictator, and an Irish vampire) in “Bryony,“Visage,” and “Staked!”

Who is Ed Calkins? Here is a twenty-question interview withthe real Ed Calkins, here is my Calkins Day address from 2020, and here is Ed’s Calkins Day message from 2018.

Here is why we celebrate Calkins Day.

Here is how to celebrate Calkins Day in our "Guide to Becoming Un-Serious."

I must also add that Ed is very dyslexic, which makes writing more challenging for him than many other writers. But he not only works through the challenge, he’s made dyslexia a key part of the plot in his Ruthless trilogy in ways that has nothing to do with reading or writing.

You also might want to listen to this podcast.

And if you follow those links, you might find yourself almost prepared to celebrate Calkins Day at The Book Market on Feb. 13.

But if you really want to impress the Steward of Tara (also known as Your Ruthlessness), come prepared to recite a limerick about him as WriteOn Joliet member Mauverneen Blevins did in 2023.

Or memorize “Birches” by Robert Frost and recite it to him.

And then watch the magic unfold.

Happy Saturday!

I have fourteen feature stories to share with you today at the bottom of this post, with more stories going live this weekend and into early next week, since I am working the weekend and the holiday. So be sure to check back on The Herald-News site: shawlocal.com/the-herald-news.

Before the stories I also have a list of additional updates, resources, and information. Please check them out, too.

Also, if you live in the Will County, Illinois area, consider checking out WriteOn Joliet's anthology display at The Book Market in Crest Hill - and purchasing one (or two) to add to your winter reading list.

And if you'd like to find more kindness in your life, consider this book.

And have a great Friday!

Event Updates

Calkins Day 2025 will take place at 6 p.m. Feb. 13 at The Book Market in Crest Hill.

I finished the copy edits for Ed Calkins, Steward of Tara's third book in his Ruthless trilogy: "Recovering Ruthless, KDP has approved it, and copies are on their way.

Ed's first book is "Ruthless," his second is "The Fifth," and he is also the author of "Denise Unland's Irish Genealogy."

Unless we wind up with a delivery issue, we will have copies for our annual Calkins Day celebration on February 13.

Stay tuned for details!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Sue's Diner is a fictional restaurant in the fictional Munsonville that only exists in the BryonySeries.

Each Wednesday, we post a new recipe. The recipe is either featured in one of our cookbooks, will be featured in an upcoming cookbook, or is just an "extra" we want to share with you.

Check out the recipe here.

WRITERS

If you're a writer anywhere in the world, you're welcome to join WriteOn Joliet's Facebook pageWe're based in Joliet, Illinois, but we love to meet and interact with writers outside our area, too.

If you'd like to officially join WriteOn Joliet, we have two tiers of dues and two ways to attend meetings. We also have a marketing arm that's getting longer every year. Check us out at writeonjoliet.com.

I also suggest this book: Little Book of Revision: A Checklist for Fiction Writers. It's exactly as it says. Each page some with one suggestion for revision. The rest of the page is blank, so you can add your own notes. All proceeds benefit WriteOn Joliet.

If you need editing or help with self-publishing, check out dmbaranunland.com.

NEWSLETTERS

Sign up for The Munsonville Times by emailing us at bryonyseries@gmail.com. The newsletter still isn't official yet, so we don't have an actual link on the website - but we are working on it!

SOCIAL MEDIA

Daily updates: I haven't posted anything on Twitter/X (except a daily Bible verse) since September I can no longer schedule posts in advance. I'm not sure yet how to manage the account without that option. But you're welcome to follow me at @Denise_Unland61.

BryonySeries stuff: I used to curated content relating to the BryonySeries on Twitter/X at @BryonySeries and still post assorted related content at facebook.com/BryonySeriesyoutube.com/user/BryonySeries, and themes of each book in the BryonySeries at pinterest.com/bryonyseries.

Again, not sure yet about the direction of the BryonySeries Twitter/X account. Still mulling that over.

And of course, please follow the adventures of Bertrand the Mouse on Instagram at bertrand_bryonyseries.
