The Fifty-Year Wait Has Ended

As a child, I loved dolls, and I had a lot of dolls.

I probably had more dolls than any other kind of toy, and I liked playing with dolls more than any other activity.

My sister and I had dolls of all shapes and sizes, including paper dolls: with tabs, magnets, and even dolls we cut from catalogs.

Some of our favorite dolls were Liddle Kiddles. I even had Liddle Kiddles coloring book.

I also had a list of dolls I never owned but yearned to own. That includes most Kiddles (the line had so many, it was nearly impossible to own them all), Crissy and Velvet dolls, Rosemary from the Rock Flowers, and most of the Dawn and Barbie dolls.

My favorite Liddle Kiddles were the Kiddle Kologne dolls. And the one I most longed to own was Rosebud.

And she recently arrived in the mail for me.

You see, one day I was showing Rebekah some of the vintage dolls I once longed to own, including Rosebud. So without telling me, Rebekah found one on Etsy and ordered it for me.

It was a lovely, sweet surprise.

Rosebud even still has a faint rose scent clinging to her.

My two granddaughters fell in love with her and wanted to play with her. If I had more (including the colonial dollhouse I once has a child, along with some period furniture), that would have been a grat option.

And thanks to the internet, not out of the realm of possibility.

Rosebud is currently sitting beneath a small Christmas tree Joshua and Timothy bought me, which Timothy set up on one of my dressers (one that used to belong to Ron's mother) late at night on the Feast of St. Nicholas.

A Lovely Tradition

I remember the first time I took my three youngest kids to Cracker Barrel in Joliet.

It was around Christmastime, and I'd made an impulsive decision to shorten the school day and treat them to lunch.

What they most enjoyed was browsing through the country store, which seemed magical to them in all its various vintage displays.

This might have been the end of our story if our family didn't have another tradition: the celebration of individual feast days.

Each of my children is named for someone in the Old Testament and someone in the New Testaments and the two names together have a particular meaning.

In the case of Rebekah and me, we share a commonish feast day, on back-to-back days.

Mine is the Immaculate Conception on Dec. 8. Hers is the Conception of St. Anne on Dec. 9.

The year after that first Cracker Barrel trip, I offered to take Rebekah there for a special lunch, just her and me, to celebrate our special days.

We've been doing it every year since then. And we pretty much order the same meal (minus the dessert, which is no longer on the menu).

Now that she's an adult and working full-time, we don't always make Dec. 8 or Dec. 9. But we do get there in December.

Some years she has treated; some years I have treated; and this year we split the costs.

And we always tour the store.

Don't be fooled by this photo. We have plenty of engagement on our special day out. She's actually looking up something to show me.

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Dec. 15 through Dec. 20

LOTS of Christmas/holiday deadlines today (and plenty of great stories to read) so no editorializing by me today.

Just plenty of wishes for all who've landed on this page that today is full of blessings for you and all whom you hold dear.

Non-bylined features:

Monday through Saturday I assembled my non-bylined works - brief posts and calendar listings - into one convenient file and posting them on Facebook in the evening, so readers can easily choose the ones they want to read.

One can also find those event listings, the Gotta Do It calendar, as well as the pets, health, faith, and arts and entertainment calendars, under the sections tab on the left hand side of http://www.theherald-news.com/. Click on "features" and the topics drop down.  Gotta Do It runs under "people."

Community news? Again, under the sections tab, under features, and by topic. Updates are posted on these days in print and web (and some only on web on other days as I have the time):

 Social media:

Daily updates: I do post the briefs and calendars on Twitter during the week, so you're welcome to follow me at @Denise_Unland61.

BryonySeries stuff: I post curated content relating to the BryonySeries at @BryonySeries. And assorted related content at www.facebook.com/BryonySeries. And of course, please follow the adventures of Bertrand the Mouse on Instagram at bertrand_bryonyseries.

If you're a writer anywhere in the world, you're welcome to jon WriteOn Joliet's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/writeonminooka/?ref=bookmarks. We're based in Joliet, Illinois, but we love to meet and interact with writers outside our area, too.

Upcoming events:

Once Timothy Baran is done updating this page, these will listed here: https://www.bryonyseries.com/fetes-and-feasts

Check out the progress he has made so far. Each square is hand-built. And be sure to "hover" your hand over the first square. Note: this only works (so far) with the desktop version.

But he's also made A LOT of changes to the website. So be sure to roam around a bit.

Books and Such

Information on my books (including where to buy) along with upcoming events is at www.bryonyseries.com. If you have any questions, email me at bryonyseries@gmail.com.

Christmas Joy, Cats, and St. Nicholas

Celebration is important and unique to the individual, even when collectively celebrating.

This is why I'm all-encompassing at our home when it comes to celebration.

As a child when I had goldfish, I colored, cut, and taped paper decorations near the fish tank and added a pinch more food on Christmas.

When I had my first dog at age forty-ish, he always received a package of Buddig lunch meat for Christmas and Easter and inside his St. Nicholas stocking.

Scooter loved Buddig lunch meat and only received it these three times a year. No one could miss the rapture in his eyes.

Of course, he didn't have the same soul-depth appreciation for, say, the birth of a Savior. But we did, which allowed us to invite him to share the joy.

So obviously when cats became part of our lives and home, they also each received a St. Nicholas stocking (complete with their names in glitter, which is wearing off) empty on the Eve and filled with a tiny tin of cat food in gravy.

The same was repeated for Christmas, Easter etc.

Now after each holiday, all stockings were packed away to await the next feast day. But, somehow, Faith would find them, and randomly leave them all over the house. Coincidence? A hint?

But it happened. We'd walk in the door at six o'clock in the morning in early July after a night of delivering newspapers, and a tiny plush stocking would be laying in the middle of the mudroom floor.

Faith is no longer a kitten. I would call her geriatric exactly, but kittenhood is definitely in her paat.

So imagine my surprise when, on the morning of St. Nicholas Day, I awakened to this on my bedroom floor.

This meant Faith had to drag this stocking, with its weighted tin of food, away from the Christmas tree, across the living room floor to the staircase, trudge up the steep stairs to the landing, turn, climb another flight of stairs, turn again, and then drag this into the middle of my bedroom floor.

Amazing!

But, apparently, totally worth it to her.

The cats are, from left, Frances, Faith, and Midnight.

Illustration by Kathleen Rose Van Pelt for "Bryony."

Whirlwind

That's how I'd describe this past weekend.

I left work at nine o'clock on Friday night and came home to a huge mess in my kitchen, which made me very happy.

Timothy had turned it into a test kitchen and prepared prototypes of four recipes I want to highlight in Thursday's Herald-News. And he was experimenting with the different techniques for photographing food, which he wants to use at his own job and for the return of the BryonySeries "Sue's Diner" recipe of the week, which went by the wayside this year during the redesign of the BryonySeries website.

After helping Timothy cleanup, and after working out and showering, it was Saturday, which brought chores, errands, the last edits on a side project, and a trip to Chicago to Del Seoul in Chicago for bipimbap for dinner.

Sunday brought an early services, Panera for breakfast and coffee, some work to complete, a meeting with Phyllis and Rebekah to sift through hundreds of photos to decide placement in the memoir, the traditional feast day dinner with Rebekah at Cracker Barrel, a dance recital for two of my grandchildren, the shooting of photos and videos for work, all of which was followed by a brisk walk, shower, and episode 16 of I Hear Your Voice with Rebekah before I fell asleep.

How can it be Monday already?

But it's a serene morning.

I hear the gentle woosh of cars through the snow outside my window.

My office/bedroom has a miniature Christmas tree (thank you, Joshua and Timothy) and my living room has a larger one (thank you, Rebekah and Daniel).

A fake fireplace softly crackles and glows (thank you, Timothy) and an globe snowflake ornament with a tealight candle (thank you, Sarah) sits by my computer (the one Christopher built for me as a surprise Christmas present a few years ago) with the coffee while the John Gary Christmas album (one of the Christmas records of my youth), very quietly emanates through my speakers, so as not to wake anyone else (thank you, modern technology).

I have not yet looked at my Monday to-do list, although I know it's full, and yet, I also know not one task is unpleasant.

Whether it's a "work" day or a "free" day or a "fiction" day, I like this early part of the morning, th slow wake up while I browse email, news, and social media, sip a nice dark roast coffee, and revel in the quiet while the rest of the house is dark.

Have a most blessed day.

Steward Setback Saturday: Candy Canes and Irish Vampires

Saturday, December 10, 2011

Candy Canes and Irish Vampires

Yes, Ed Calkins, Steward of Tara, dressed in an Old World Father Christmasy hat and carrying a bucket of candy canes, was already making his jolly rounds when I, huge mug of coffee in MY hand, arrived at the distribution center at one o'clock this morning.

It's been over a year since Ed last worked at this particular location and just several months since I've stopped delivering newspapers, yet the return was a joyful one for both, especially me, since I'm still in withdrawal. I have these moments, suppressed, of course, where I want to ride around at night--windows down and radio cranked up--throwing things (ideally newspapers) out of windows.

Ed and rival supervisor Dan resumed their plans to take over certain countries with insulting limericks, and one female carrier entered to the loud cry from Ed she (mistakenly) assumed she'd never hear again: "All, hail, Audrey the Magnificent!"

Of course, Ed showed the proper respect by virtue of his former nickname for me (Newspaper Goddess), by genuflecting, head bowed, to offer me a candy, the very pose assumed every day when he brought me my route book.

Now, having immortalized him and all, my nickname is Mistress of Immortality or MOM. Yes, I know it doesn't match, but Ed is horribly dyslexic, so it works for him. FYI: Any blog postings he sends are thoroughly edited by me, keeping in mind my copyediting skills are less than stellar.

Saturdays are a notoriously slow day. Carriers, the ones that still run on Saturdays, arrive late and leave late. Ed still had to drive an hour back to HIS distribution center to run a route. Still, I sold, and he signed, a few books. To catch the attention of sleepy carriers pushing grocery carts full of inserts back to their tables, Ed would stop them and point to his picture on page one hundred and ninety-three.

Periodically, he would stop, grinning, and excitedly say, "We're really doing this. Remember when we only talked about signing books at the center?" Before I could do more than smile and nod, Ed was showing a carrier where his name appeared in Bryony, then add the exhortation to look for the parade in his honor some thousand years hence.

I chatted to a couple of carriers who were a little envious--in a good way--of my having completed an entire book. One, a musician, is writing his autobiography, but got stuck one hundred and fifty-five pages into it. The other, a former Chicago teachers, has an idea for a screen play, but can't get the words out.

Both marveled how I, with homeschooled kids, other writing assignments, and throwing papers at night, managed to write an entire book. I told them my lap goes with me everywhere I go.

"Oh, so you wrote it all the computer?"

Well, yes, eventually. I also wrote bursts of inspiration on backs of old envelopes, margins of books, and myriads of tiny notebooks, really any form of paper within reach. I also had to utilize random bits of time, which is the way I really dislike to write, but when it's the only available time...well, that's when you have to stay true to your goals.

Ed then told me a story about how is granddaughter is beginning to not believe he is REALLY Santa Claus and wondering if his credibility will be shot if he tells her Santa is also a vampire.

"Especially the first Irish vampire," Ed said.

One of the supervisors, who is generally quiet and whom I did not expect to wander near our make-shift work station book "store," spent some time flipping through the Bryony, noting the research, and asking me how long it took me to compose it.

Even better, he made a couple allusions to the distribution center being "one of the seven levels of hell." Later, he referenced something back to "the library of Alexandria." Now my curious was piqued, and I hope an opportunity for conversation with him the next time I bring my teens down to stuff inserts. There's so much more to people than meets the eye, right?

And yes, he bought a book.

Ed took five back with him for family Christmas gifts this weekend and is coming back for twenty more next week. These will be a huge surprise, he said. Although he's told everyone in his large extended family that he is in a book, when you identify yourself as a ruthless dictator and create Celtic myths about yourself, your family tends to dismiss your other claims.

I jubilantly waved a book before him. "And now you have the proof."

He laughed. "Yes, now I have the proof!"

At three-thirty, Ed packed it up, worried about making HIS deadline, then paused.

"Can I hug you?" he asked.

LOL! Why, of course! Merry Christmas, O Ye Steward of Tara!

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Dec. 8 through Dec. 13

Curiouser and curiouser!

That's the best way to describe this week (thank you, Alice and Lewis Carroll for the phrase).

It's been a week with more twists than a corkscrew (or a good novel). Ever have a week like that?

It's not necessarily been a bad week, just an interesting one (and in many ways a good one).

No, I'm not playing the social media "beg me to tell you." There's nothing in particular to tell - it's just been an interesting week in a way that would interest only me.

But here's something: Even though the day is super-packed I am, from the early morning side of things, right on time and not behind at all.

How 'bout it?

Thank you for reading The Herald-News. And for reading this blog. And if you've read (or plan to read) any of my books. Your support is greatly appreciated.

BryonySeries Throwback Thursday: I'm Not Much for Candy Canes, Except...

Saturday, December 8, 2018

I'm Not Much for Candy Canes, Except...

...when the candy canes show up in my St.Nicholas stocking or when Ed Calkins, Steward of Tara, distributes them.

Yes.

At 57, I still hang up a stocking on St. Nicholas Eve, which is tonight in our world because of everyone's crazy work schedules. We draw names and leave gifts as surprises, which we open together.

Years ago, I found a St. Nicholas blessing prayer for candy canes, so candy canes and gold-foil chocolate coins are traditional candy pieces for our stockings.

The "traditional: candy cane flavor and size, if you please.

During those last few years of our newspaper delivery days, we worked with Ed. He always kept a container of miniature candy canes (see below), with him in the distribution center, which he passed out to people with their bundles.

It sounds strange, but those candy canes tasted frosty good in the December middle of the night air with the windows rolled down.

Every now and again in December, I find myself wishing for an Ed Calkins candy cane.

Ed must have read my mind, because at last year's Calkins Day event, he had a couple leftover ones in his pocket, which he offered to me.

Um, no.

And I said so, too.

A Unique Partnership

If you haven't read the news release my WriteOn Joliet co-leader Tom Hernandez sent out last week, you should.

I don't know everything about every writer's group that's ever existed.

But I do know a partnership like this is unprecedented.

When I was a child, I longed to connect with Catherine Wooley, Shirley Simon, Marilyn Sacks, Ruth M. Arthur, Patricia Clapp, Carolyn Keene, Laura Lee Hope, Jane Thayer, Barbara Wallace and more.

Some of connections might have been possible today if they were still alive. I say "some," because Carolyn Keene and Laura Lee hope never existed. And Jane Thayer is a pen name of Catherine Wooley.

I would have been ecstatic to learn they lived in my own community. I would have been even more ecstatic to meet them and discuss their books with them.

That's one reason why these partnerships matter. The opportunities to connect readers with locally authored books, and to connect local authors with readers, are in exciting, foundational stages.

If you read, this is good news for you.

If you write, this is also good news for you.

Steward Setback Saturday: Who's Minding Tara?

 Saturday, December 11, 2010
Who's Minding Tara?

While chatting earlier this week with Ed Calkins, the Steward of Tara, he informed me his ruthless dictator personality goes on vacation this time of year and is replaced with the spirit of Santa Claus.

Now distributing candy canes, reindeer hats, and listening with an empathic ear to children's Christmas wants are good and laudable activities, but I have two real concerns.

One: When will he finish my genealogy? This is extremely important since Ed Calkins is the only source for this valuable information.

Two: Will additional development infiltrate the Hill of Tara now that the steward has neglected his post?

Editor's note: My entire genealogy was released in 2018, just in time for Calkins Day. You can buy it here.
