Two Days Until Calkins Day: The Epic Limerick in Four Installments (So Far)

If you've haven't registered yet for our free Calkins Day celebration on at 6 p.m. CST Thursday on Zoom, here is the link: https://www.bryonyseries.com/registerforcalkinsday

This week, in advance of Calkins Day, I'm paying a bit of homage to a former supervisor turned character in several BryonySeries novels, turned Irish vampire, turned novelist, by posting some previous posts as a way of introducing you to Ed or giving you an opportunity to revist the enjoyment you received the first time you read them.

Confused? Wait until you meet Ed.

Here are three posts to introduce you to Ed Calkins' brand of writing.

All three are the first four parts of an limerick he was writing in installments as his character until he lost his way.

Because Ed sent them in installments, I mislabeled them along the way.

But here they are in the order he sent them.

And here is our recipe for Irish Soda bread, in case you'd like to make some during the Zoom call.

Enjoy!

Another Bit of a Throwback: Recap of the first Calkins Day Limerick Match

Calkins Day is two days away, and we are celebrating this year with a lighthearted WriteOn Joliet open mic at the Book and Bean Cafe, 3395 Black Road, Joliet.

In 2017, we finally remembered to acknowledge the holiday with an extremely small parade.

And last year, we held a limerick slam that kept one attendee pitching the idea to other venues and writing her "letters to the editor" in limerick verse.

It was an unusual idea and turnout was slim: my kids and three guests (who declined to be photographed, most likely for obvious reasons).

We did, however, have a hilariously good time. Photos below.

Recap of the first Calkins Day Limerick Match
Our Calkins Day limerick match (or slam, as some people called it), was, by far, the most successful BryonySeries event in the short history of the series.

I know it's trendy for authors to hype their events and inflate the magnitude of the actual day/afternoon/night. In fact, unless I'm reading an author's blog post about how to host a successful author event (with the writer drawing on persona experiences of past failed events), I have never read an author saying his or her event flopped.

Well, I have held some flopped events. And others that attracted a fair amount of people.

For instance, last year's Calkins Day event went extremely well mostly do to the large amount of WriteOn Joliet members who supported it.

But the Calkins Day limerick match on Calkins Day (Feb. 13) at the Book and Bean Cafe in Joliet, was the first event where people posted on social media about the fun they had.

I talked to people who's mood was still very up the next day and one woman who's trying to coordinate another event in a different location.

Why did it work?

Not sure.

But I think it was the pure creative fun.

There was no cause to support. No funds to raise. No selling of books (Really. I didn't bring not even one book to the event).

Now granted, the event was based on a a limerick match featured in Staked!. We would not have a Calkins Day event without an Ed Calkins who made up a "national" holiday based on his Feb. 13 birthday.

But the night was mostly to celebrate silly, creative fun. Costumes were encouraged, and one couple arrived dressed in Irish green.

As in Staked!, we had two teams.

We had a Steward team with four members.

And we had a Poet team with four members

People composed their own limericks or they could choose from the table of provided limericks.

Both team captains scored each limerick reader and composer, regardless of team affiliation.

Limerickers were received points based on originality, performance, and presentation.

Simply writing and delivering a limerick about Ed gained the limericker points, too.

Patrons contestants, and Ed enjoyed Tammy's homemade Irish soda bread, the first time she's ever baked it (Stop in and tell her to bake some for St. Patrick's Day)

I wanted to offer token prizes. But the cafe's owner, Tammy Hudson-Duckworth, said she would take care of the prizes. Yes, I was on a winning team (Poet).

Afterwards, limerickers, reluctant to let the fun go, stayed to talk to Ed. I talked to other patrons who had a great time watching the fun.

I called the next day to thank Tammy for her generosity in allowing us to host our celebration in the cafe and for providing the prizes. I also booked next year's Calkins Day event, and Tammy has some definite ideas on what she'd like us to do.

It won't be a limerick match (although we might host another one in a different location this year). But I can tell you this.

It will be different than the last two events. And it appears Tammy and I might be co-hosting it.

Like a treasure beneath a stormy dark sea
Are encrypted revelations in Byrony
but the truth at its core,
with his limericks and lore
Is how ruthless Ed Calkins can be.

Ed Calkins: "Staked!"-Based Epic Poem (Part Three)

A couple weeks ago, Ed Calkins, the Steward of Tara, (finally) sent the third installment to his epic limerick, which is very loosely based on several of the characters in Staked! the third novel in the BryonySeries trilogy.

For those needing to catch up, here are the links to parts one and two:

http://bryonyseries.blogspot.com/2018/03/ed-calkins-staked-based-epic-poem-no-one.html

http://bryonyseries.blogspot.com/2018/04/ed-calkins-staked-based-epic-poem-part.html

For those who have no idea who Ed Calkins is, read this primer:

https://bryonyseries.blogspot.com/2017/04/steward-setback-saturday-twenty.html

And, of course, I am MOMI (Mistress of My Immortality)

For your amusement, I've included the installment along with the contents of Ed's most recent telegram. And the "panel" which he refers at the end has to do with this year's Calkins Day event (to which you are all invited.

More on the event later! :)

Dear MOMI,

I promise this thing has an ending somewhere but right now, I'm feeling a little like Capt. O' Windfree. This unfinished 'epic poem' has been sitting on my hard drive and I've been telling myself to ignore it and it will go away. It hasn't. I then tell myself, 'just finish it by getting to the point', but there is no point.

The poet tries to blame a Muse

Twelve Muses cast their craft willy-nilly
But this epic has gone from unlikely to silly
Seems I met number thirteen
And she’s making me scream
Cause she’s pulling me by what’s behind my own willy

Seems she’s the very muse of derange
Of two meetings she has put in my range
Both on O’Windfree’s own ship
But her pulling, I can’t skip
Here’s where the whole tale starts to get strange

Next morning, O’Windfree told the crew
Of the new plan that Ed already knew
A place called Egypt they were near
Which would trade their wares for beer
But the next part he didn’t have a clue

(Before the recovery movement or 12 step programs, self help groups were very different
The captain and crew have their Tuesday night meeting about their strange diet).

But when the foursome where away for awhile
Captain and crew had a meeting quite vile
See, the Irish have an affliction
We are prone to addiction
All while floating down the river of denial

Said the Captain, “Welcome to the non-cannibal meeting.
“We reassure each other and there plenty of seating,
that they will remember in song
that we did nothing wrong
But we also must choose who next we are eating”

“I should start this meeting with good news
None here at this meeting will draw straws and lose
Both the captain and crew
Have delivered two new
And for our next meal between the two we choose.”

“Look, If we were thieves, we would rob them
If we were from Sodom we’d nob them
And I hope to make plain
That each should explain
how we don’t have a people-eating problem”

“I’ll go first cause I’m feeling quite shoddy
I brought the women name “O” who’s a hottie.
She’s both funny and sweet
But I see her as meat
But I not the first to only want her body.”

I’ll go next cause I’m Jim the first mate
Let’s remember how we got this fate
Lost at sea for thirty days
With out food or any ways
To fish for food without nets or bait

“The next week we tried anything that we could
Rats, bedbugs, leather, cloth, flies, and even wood.
But Matt’s life starvation halted
And It’s he that should be faulted
Because when we ate he tasted so good”

Then each one here and not had agreed
That empty bellies, thirty days didn’t need.
And as soon as Matt’s meat
The whole crew finished to eat
We would draw straws on who next to feed.

After the next meal we did the fleet proud
By deciding that eating crew was allowed
Since then all agreed with our law
Expect the one drawing the short straw.
Gees there always just one in a crowd

THEN KIRK SHARES HIS 'NOT A CANNIBAL' IDEA

It’s not my name but they call me ‘Cannibal Kirk’.
It’s not true but I’m known as a jerk
But my public service,
Makes the lazy nervous.
I only eat people who wouldn’t be showing for work.

BOB GOES NEXT

My name’s Bob and I’m not being malicious
But of the losers complaining I’m suspicious
They say they’re not into vore
And they’d like to live more
But then why did they get so delicious

THEN THE COOK HAS HIS OWN IDEA

I’m Chef David and you don’t have a clue
Cause I’m different and smarter then all you
With your life chances you took
But you wouldn’t cook the cook
If a short straw I draw you’ll all want to redo

So I’ll tell you the of our food inventory
It’s a plain tail that tells the whole story
Tomorrow part of a thigh
And tonight, kidney pie
And it the last of meat from young Laurie

Perhaps two days is too far to look ahead
Future meals you don’t worry about when you’re fed
With the planning I cursed by
More cooking fat has the first guy.
The one the uneatable wood sprite call Uncle Ed

MEANWHILE, A MORE IMPORTANT MEETING...

While the crew talked of who they’d be eating
The remaining had their own book club meeting.
They discussed far future writing
And found three so exciting
That they made “O” list for future summer reading

The cliff hanger is; what three books got chosen?

Ruthlessly Yours,
                                                          Ed Calkins
P.S, I look forward to being on the panel the next Calkins day

Ed Calkins: The Beat Goes On

Dear MOMI,

What have I done!

I've started a story that will take four thousand years to complete and has to be told in limerick form.

More then that, the characters keep stealing my pen.

Who'd have thought Glorna would be such a punk, Ed Calkins so twisted, and a vegan gator such a bully.

None of this was my idea, but here is the third in my nameless epic limerick.

THE POET DATES THE TIME WHILE WHINING HIS STORY IS TOO HARD TO WRITE

By now It was now clear as clear can be
That both Glorna and Ed were in two thousand BC
And their gator companion made three
Now, I must be out of my tree
For thinking this telling would easy be

THE MISFIT THREE BRING WOOD FOR CARVING TO THE SHIP THEY HOPE TO SET PASSAGE BACK TO ENGLAND FROM, EVEN THOUGH THEY WILL BE FOUR THOUSAND YEARS TOO EARLY TO RETURN TO WHERE DENISE LET THEM DIE.

While the brave captain was in O’s dwelling
The three carried to the ship that was smelling
Wood removed for the dead tree
To be carved for the sailors to see
The wives that the threesome were selling

And since none of the three could carve wood
The silly steward asked if the crew would
Carve the women he described
By the stories he prescribed
And the figures’ figures that would have to be good.

ED CALKINS PITCHES HIS "WIVES," WHICH ARE OBVIOUSLY WOMEN HE NEVER MET

“First a queen with a fetish for being rolled into rugs
Cleopatra of the future Egyptian thugs
And if you meet her it would please her,
If you call yourself Julia Caesar.
Then she just might give you a few hugs.”

“Then the mystical goddess, Aphrodite
Should be married to one high and mighty
But for a limited time, what the heck
her for a place on your deck.
Just image how she looks in a nighty.”

Then there’s this Boudica the Celtic queen
With a reputation of being quite mean
But if you watch right the omens
She doesn’t like the Greeks or the Romans
But for young sailors she makes quite a scene

“Maybe horses and nude women is your guilty pleasure.
Might I suggest that Lady Godiva is your treasure
The long-haired mystique that attracts is
Her method of protesting taxes.
By riding naked through Coventry for good measure”

“There’s another that I think you should know
The whole world will call her Marilyn Monroe
She will famously flirt
Wind will hike up her shirt
This blond bombshell will make your heart go."

“Dolly Parton known for her voice and platinum blond hair
And chest you’d wish you could bare
And her homey southern charm,
Why she’d be worth the whole farm
But for passage to Ireland is quite overly fair”

THE CREWS' CARVINGS OF ED WIVES WERE QUITE GOOD

As Ed pitched, the figures carved by the crew
Made each statuette looking life like and true
Down to the smallest detail
You’d have thought any male
Would be a knickknack collector of new

THE FIRST MATE WANTS A REAL WOMAN

Said the first mate, “Look here is the deal
We’d consider you offer a steal
And take only one wife not six
If you offer us this in the mix
Make only one of the statuettes real

ED DOESN'T BELIEVE THEY WANT REAL WIVES. HE UPS THE OFFER BY THROWING IN DENISE'S ADOPTED IRISH NIECE (WITHOUT KNOWING IF THERE IS SUCH A NIECE)

Now Ed replied to the men of the sea,
“If your wives were your own cup of tea,
You’d sailed were they are
Instead of from them so far
You’re just haggling for a larger fee.”

Replied the first mate. “This is way out of hand
It’s my own wedding that chase me from land
You’d leave too if you met her
But if you can do no better
Well then you can just stay here on the sand.”

“Want a wife that make you immortal as I?
Greatness and novels are an over told lie
Well you can’t have Denise
But I throw in her adopted Irish niece
Gees you’re making this bid over high”

It was then that the second mate spoke
Sounding as if he was making a joke
“It’s starvation not tall tales we’re cursed
And of wives that won’t be, we had worse
But we have room for a gator, wood sprite and bloke.

THE FIRST MATE WANTS MORE WIVES, FEARING MURDER IF THERE AREN'T ENOUGH WIVES TO GO AROUND

The first mate’s rage made his face turn quite blue
Shouting, ‘men you just don’t have a clue
With too few wives, I know what would happen
When seven women, eight men and the captain
Fight to the death over who marries who

THE SECOND MATE WANTS MORE WIVES ADDED TO THE OFFER

Said the second, “I’d feel peace inside
He knows of many wives If he hasn’t lied
How about this new deal
A new wife every meal
Means every third day I get a new bride.”

ED SUGGESTS THAT EACH MAN COULD HAVE EVERY WIFE WITHOUT INCITING JEALOUS RAGE BECAUSE THESE WIVES EXIST ONLY IN THE IMAGINATION. STILL, HE DOES UP THE OFFER

“I well know that prenuptial infatuation
Can cause war against nation to nation
Its this way, I call
Each should marry all
There is privacy in one’s own imagination”

“So what I can’t do,” the steward did say
“Is supply three brand new women each day
So one bride per day it will be
for room and broad for us three
Hell, I can give my whole stock away.”

THE THREE ARE ABOARD BY THE TIME THE CAPTAIN RETURNS

By the time O’ Winfree came back in to the picture
With his own plan to add to the mixture
Asleep, but with smile his crew wore
Were as impoverished as before
But each counted themselves seven wives richer

GLORNA SENSES A TRAP

Whispered Glorna to Ed, “This is sleazy.
The fear in my stomach make me wheezy.
We gave words not real women
Some kind of web, they’d be spinnin’
They let us aboard way too easy.

ED'S MORE WORRIED ABOUT BED BUGS

Ed says, “Bed you should dread not the deal
Most men only want women who aren’t real
And to combat the confusion
I recommend self-delusion.
Which is no help for the bite of bed bugs you’ll feel."

To be dragged on even further….

Ruthlessly yours,

Ed Calkins
