Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Nov. 25 through Nov. 30

T'is the season to be super busy!

With some extra work projects this month and extra meetings today, I'll just (almost) right to the stories.

One upcoming event of particular note: The WriteOn Joliet Gothic Book Club is concluding it's "read" of Sue Mydliak's Birthright season this Saturday. For the next couple months, we will take a fantasy turn and read Colleen Robbins Daruga's Quest.

If you haven't checked us out, tomorrow would be a good day to do so. We meet from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the Book and Bean Cafe, 3395 Black Road in Joliet (inside the Joliet Public Library).

The book club is perfectly free (the coffee is not), and one does not need to belong to WriteOn Joliet to attend.

According to a news release from the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic, 1 in 3 people in the U.S. has prediabetes. This means a person's blood glucose is higher than normal, but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis.

Commentary on "The Dark Side of the First Christmas" by Robert Arakaki

On Christmas Eve, I read an article that really resonated with me: "The Dark Side of the First Christmas" by Robert Arakaki.

Arakaki began by describing the elements many associate with Christmas: the scent of pine, happy songs, children excited with anticipation, Christmas shopping, eggnog, candy canes, twinkling lights, etc.

There's nothing wrong with these elements, although some people do feel out of step if they aren't "feeling it."

But maybe the people feeling "less merry and bright" have more in common with the nativity than those full of Christmas cheer.

Arakaki elaborates on the each of these: Joseph's doubt, Mary's illegitimate pregnancy and its potential scandal, Jesus being born into occupation territory and having no rights as a Roman citizen, his political refugee status (flight into Egypt), Herod's paranoia, the slain children,

Jesus is born into a dark world bringing a promise of resurrection. So maybe the ultimate Christmas message is this:

"So evil murderous rulers, political refugees, grieving mothers, brave fathers are all part of the Christmas story. They represent the dark side of Christmas often overlooked. Let us remember that our suffering and the sufferings of the world are among those “light affliction” which God even now might be working for great and unimagined Glory."

Arakaki's article reminded me that we don't pack Christmas away with the tinsel and lights; we use them as props to welcome the True Light into our hearts and then carry Him with us into a weary world.

Dreaming Up a Good Story

These were my two thoughts at 3:40 this morning.

No. one: Wow, getting rid of a headache is rather nightmarish (It's been a long couple of months of off and on again migraines).

No. two: This would make a great story.

Here's the dream:

I dreamed that someone I knew wanted to murder someone in Elwood and then commit suicide. Because I knew this person would kill me and my two youngest kids (who were pretty little in the dream), I pretended to go along with it.

So this person began to confide in me. The medium was poison. And she showed me the syringe she was going to use.

Now the setting was bizarre. It looked like a department store on the main floor (We were standing in the medicine department), but my kids were hanging out in the basement. In fact, they were waiting for me to come downstairs and watch TV and color with them.

A few aisles away, several police officers were giving another acquaintance some free food. I had a package of frozen ravioli someone had given me, so I added it to the distribution, quickly tipped off the police officers, and fled to the basement, locking and bolting the door.

I heard lots of angry yelling from upstairs for a long time and then quiet.

Before long, I heard the door rattle and one of the policemen saying everything was fine now and to come out.

By now, I was semi-conscious but still wrapped in the dream.

It's also when I realized my mistake.

By hiding away, I could no longer see the activity on the other side of the door.

Now, everything seemed too convenient.

Was it a friend or foe on the other side?

And did he now have the syringe?

At this point I woke up, fully alert, had the first two thoughts, and decided it would be stupid to get up so early.

So I set the alarm for 4:30 and went back to sleep.

I'm always amazed by the way our minds reassemble bits of information. Here's what it did:

The last emails I sent at bedtime were to several police officers for a story in progress.

My oldest son, who is diabetic, but non-insulin dependent, is having health issues and used to live in Elwood.

I had read a post from a person receiving food before bedtime.

Also before bedtime, I had printed and packaged up some coloring sheets for my grandchildren.

Rebekah and I made a list of things we need from Walmart on Saturday.

And she wanted to make the frozen ravioli with the pork chops, but I told her to save it for later and use the potatoes instead.

And, of course, I like a good story twist.

What I Did for Two Days Instead of Blogging

I didn't start out not intending to blog, but as time slipped away, I did let it go.

I started Saturday off with scheduling some social media and an early breakfast with my brother and sister-in-law that was so relaxing, it extended into most of the morning.

And then I spent part of the afternoon working. I still had a couple stories to write since I had taught the monthly fiction workshop on Friday night.

Afterward, Rebekah and I worked on a surprise project for Christmas that's been on my idea list since the Channahon days. Timothy put up the tree, and it's a beautiful tree.

On Sunday, we watched two movies that's been on our "must see" list for awhile: Crazy Rich Asians and Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic. I enjoyed both, but the first was Americanly predictable, and the second, although it started off slowly, was very well executed.

Note to writers: At least twice, Book of the Atlantic stops the motion for back story and "info dumps." And guess what? Both times it works! It only goes to show: context, context, context.

Sunday night I had the house to myself, so I cleaned said house in preparation for today, walked a bit, and scheduled some social media.

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Nov. 18 through Nov. 23

Feeling so thankful this morning!

Yesterday I made it to my St. Nicholas in Homewood and gave thanks with my church community, worked while my family napped and then cooked our traditional Thanksgiving dinner (poor boys, kettle chips, and pumpkin pie), and then took care packages to one son who had to work and another who has been out of work for the last month due to an infection in his bone.

The day was joyful and serene, really a great day!

Today it's back to deadlines and teaching a writing workshop tonight. Have a great Friday readers, writers, and vampire fans!

Color or No Color: That is the Question

So in keeping with the nineteenth century/vintage feel of the Before the Blood story line, these five books won't have chapter heading art as the other books do.

But each book will have a frontispiece and a quote.

Here's my dilemma: the colors in the art are amazing. And the artist, Topher Gleason, incorporated tiny details into the art that aren't readily visible in black and white.

But frontispieces aren't generally in color (of course, older books were all hardcover and these, for the time being, will be softcover).

An interior color image will be more expensive than a black and white one, but it is just one image.

And the colors do tie in with theme - at least the first three do (I don't have the last two yet).

Here are the frontispieces for the first two books (the third image is a copy, and the colors aren't as vibrant, so I'm not attaching that one yet).

One Nearly Done, Four More to Go

On Saturday I met with my editor Colleen Robbins to review her notes on the BryonySeries prequel Before the Blood.

The novel is unfinished on purpose and consists of five parts, also unfinished on purpose, that will be published in 2019 in five separate installments.

She had typed up her comments on each of the five parts, which we reviewed. She had also edited the first manuscript, which she felt only needed a light copyedit.

You know the meeting will go well when the open line is, "First of all: well done," and the last one is "an excellent read."

So I spent Saturday making the changes, formatting the manuscript,and then sending it Rebekah to scroll through my formatting.

Sue Midlock had already made and sent the covers.

Topher Gleason has created three of the five frontispieces.

Once Rebekah assembles the cover pieces, she can upload the manuscript to KDP and order a proof.

The goal is to release the volumes one every two months starting in January.

None of this will shake up the world, I know. Nor will these books have tremendous readership.

But to see the most complicated writing project I've undertaken finally come together after eight years of work is, well, satisfying.

And the books will always be there, just waiting for the right readers to discover them.

A Good Time Really Was Had By All

This past Friday night, WriteOn Joliet held its second anthology release party at The Book Market in Crest Hill.

Between writers, guests, and patrons who took advantage of the store's later hours due to the event, we had a steady stream of people from 6 to 8:30 p.m. - with the owner, Janet Staley still ringing up purchases long after 8:30 had passed.

People had fun and many left with a stack of books. These were combinations of WriteOn Joliet's first and second anthologies, titles by individual authors, and books from the store.

And the food...

The food was phenomenal, thanks to our chefs who created it: Timothy Baran, Jasmine Rosenboom, and Rebekah Baran. They are already planning next year's menu for next year's event, which will be held Nov. 15, 2019.

Even Bertrand had a great time!

The glorious weekend continued (for me) the next morning when I met with my editor for Before The Blood.

But that's a post for tomorrow.

In addition to selling used – and a limited amount of new – books, people can donate books to The Book Market and receive credit toward the purchase of books from the store, owner Janet Staley said. She doesn't want books ending up "in some landfill."

"They're too precious," Staley said.
