Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Aug. 26 through Aug. 31

Little editorializing this morning. Today/this weekend/next week is busier than most.

Deadlines today and later a funeral in Indiana as a good friend unexpectedly died this week. to and fro, I plan to finish copy editing Cornell Dyer and the Necklace of Forgetfulness, a real sacrifice as I can't read in the car without getting extremely queasy.

Tomorrow: Hanging about the Book and Bean Cafe in Joliet for a lot of the day to take photos of the four artists as they install their art and to attend the WriteOn Joliet Gothic Book Club (come join us!) at 12:30 p.m.

Then for the rest of Saturday and the next two days (except for church) I'm working.

I'm the on call editor for Labor Day. And I have many pages to fill for next week before I can take a few days off.

And what will I do on those few days? Complete the composition of Before the Blood (or very nearly) and get the first four manuscripts to my editor to begin reading while I finish the fifth. Please pray/send out good thoughts/sacrifice a goat that the week goes smoothly (no illness, no tragedy, etc.) that get in the way of my completing it.

On that Friday, I do have a work engagement, some errands, so it will be less productive.

On that Saturday, I do have dentist appointment and the celebration of Timothy's birthday, so again.

On the very last day before I return to work, Rebekah and I are taking a "BryonySeries" day and catch up on all those bits and pieces of tasks that we keep putting off for lack of time.

So you see, I only have three really good days to keep at it.

Onward to the "real" writing. Where to find it?

Non-bylined features:

Monday through Saturday I assembled my non-bylined works - brief posts and calendar listings - into one convenient file and posting them on Facebook in the evening, so readers can easily choose the ones they want to read.

Community news? Again, under the sections tab, under features, and by topic. Updates are posted on these days in print and web (and some only on web on other days as I have the time): Monday (pets), Tuesday (health), Thursday (faith), Friday (arts and entertainment), and Sunday (people).

BryonySeries Throwback Thursday: Only a Dream by Sarah Stegall

Monday, October 11, 2010

Only a Dream?

According to http://www.wikipedia.com/, a dream is a succession of emotions, images, or sounds that the mind experiences during sleep. The content and purpose of dreams are not fully understood, though they have been a topic of interest and speculation throughout recorded history.

Just about everybody dreams. Most of us can recall dreams from different periods of our lives. Some of us even remember a dream from last night. Dreaming happens different for everyone, though science recognizes it usually occurs during the sleep stage of Rapid Eye Movement, or REM.

I believe, for myself, that when I dream it's my subconsciousness working out things my awake self didn't or couldn't deal with. You might disagree. I've learned that dream interpretation has an enormous berth. Recently, I noticed my daily stress has been rolling into my sleep.

I had a very disturbing dream just last night. The progression of the dream made no sense, yet my dream self knew exactly what I should be doing at all points of the dream. Only it wasn't a dream. It was more like a waking nightmare. I'm not really keen with sharing the details so I'll just give you the dynamics. Someone was dying, I couldn't stop it, and right before the dream should end, the face of the dying person was replaced with someone I'd give my life for. Even worse, the details of this dream really stood out.

All day today I've had this dream in the back of my mind. When I broke it down it was almost humorous! The beads of sweat I so clearly remember, turned out to be some drool. The password for the computer in my dream turned out to be the last thing I was thinking of last night. I also believe I gave my blanket a very awesome back rub. I realize my stresses were just amplified.

Other aspects I've come across are: I normally don't remember dreams and the ones that stand out are the ones that happen right before I awake. Sure I've had a few where I wake up in a sweat in the middle of the night, but those are ones where I don't remember much and I eventually nod back off over a book.

This post is quite relevant to Bryony, because Melissa relives a life that isn't hers during the nights. She is faced with lucid dreams or wild hallucinations. Melissa is unsure whose version of events she's dreaming of or if they are even dreams because they seem so real. Denise's manuscript is full of clues that lead the readers into making their own assumptions as to what happens. If you dream tonight, ask yourself in the morning, "Is it only a dream?"

The Power of Mist

"That was the caption on a photo."

This is all I had written from a post began in 2012: the title and this first sentence. I don't remember where I was going with it.

I also don't remember when or how or why I wove this element into Bryony, but I do remember mentally working on the story in the dark of night while throwing newspapers  and watching the mist rise from the canal and drift through the surrounding neighborhoods as I did so, very nurturing to the story.

In fact, the first line of the first book refers to the mist, and in repeat readings, the reader will read it with a different perspective:

As the fog rolled inland off the lake, the approaching dusk grew uncommonly gloomy.

And more references in Bryony:

Mist ascended from the lake and hovered on the path directly above Melissa.

A gauzy film hovered above the trees like a giant spider web, but the sky over the lake was clear.

The mist thickened and rolled across the road toward the drive.

She tried to scream, but thick, white mist strangled her.

The mist danced at her window, and hazy moonlight filled the room.

The last thing Melissa noticed was mist rising past her bedroom window.

She did not see any mist, but she never saw it in town.

One from Visage:

As she turned onto that familiar drive, she glanced backward at the entrance to the woods. Of course, she saw no mist. Why should she?

And one from Staked!

She wandered into Simons Woods and demanded the once dreaded mist to appear.

And one from the last book of Before the Blood:

A strange mist came to town and settled over her lake. The lake always had mist, but this was a different mist, a moving mist, an alive mist. It danced in her mind and toyed with time.

Sue's Diner: Stewed Fruit With Cream

Melissa is thrilled when John finally invites her to a picnic away from the mansion, just the two of them. Of course, John feels Bryga packed enough food to feed them for a week, but even that careless remark couldn’t completely dampen Melissa’s excitement of being alone with John.

We substituted canned peaches for the stewed and added fresh strawberries. Then we froze the extra cream and made ice cream. It didn't make a super-sweet ice cream, so we really enjoyed it.

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Aug. 19 through Aug. 24

A quick few pieces of news to share and then onto the stories.

1) The WriteOn Joliet website has a new look. check us out! www.writeonjoliet.com.

2) Come meet some of us in person. We have a table at the Will County Celtic Fest tomorrow and volunteers will be running the booth from noon to 9 p.m. We have books for sale, information about us and some of our upcoming events.

3) Slooooooowly making my way through proofreading Cornell dyer and the Necklace of Forgetfulness. It's been a busy month socially, and my main focus right now is Before the Blood. Although I do hope to finish Cornell this weekend since I'll be on the road (not driving).

4) And speaking of Before the Blood, the goal is to plug up all the composition gaps in the last book during my second at-home writing retreat in early September. In the meantime, I've been rereading and editing...and liking what I'm reading and editing! Finally, right?

5) The Art of the BryonySeries exhibit goes up early September and will remain in place through Halloween. Be sure to check out the wide variety of art: four artist, many different types of work and mediums. Also, a reception will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 27. Stop in to say "hi," meet some local talent, and inquire about commissions, since all four artists are taking them. And yes, they do book illustrations and cover design.
