The Artwork is Framed

At Christmas, BryonySeries artist Christopher Gleason surprised me with the original pieces of all five frontispieces he created for Before the blood.

This past weekend, Timothy framed them all. Timothy also framed the "aerial view" of Munsonville's Main Street an artist known only to me "Jenny" created. 

Timothy also framed a painting and note Bertrand "created" as my birthday present last year (with the help of Cindy, Daniel's girl friend). Since then, Cindy's son Justin has become a Bertrand fan and finally got to meet Bertrand in his real crocheted person last night.

KDP Decides for Us

So a couple of weeks ago, I posed this question:

And then I received some great feedback on Facebook.

Most of the responses favored a black and white frontispiece, citing black and white best kept with the prequel's vintage (and over all nineteenth century) theme.

However, I have a book published in 1908 with a color frontispiece. And I found a medical book from 1848 with a color frontispiece. And Rebekah Baran said, "I feel that Victorians would have used color if it was available to them."

Well, it was. And they did, at least some of the time.

We decided to order the first proof with color just to see.

And then we learned if we chose color, we'd have to give up the cream interior. That prompted a call to KDP. My very nice service representative put me on hold to talk up the ladder to find out why. He soon returned with the answer: Because colors don't print accurately on cream paper.

Fair enough.

I felt white was too stark for a novel, so we flipped through some of the novels we owned. We did find a few printed on white paper (not many) and decided to order the first proof in color on white paper to see if we liked it.

Well, last night we had one more blow.

The base cost for a 150-page book with one color illustration was more than twice times the base cost of Bryony, which was nearly twice as many pages.

Then KDP said the lowest we could set the retail price was $20.

Which meant the consumer would have to pay $100 to read all five, which is really one book.

Heck, I wrote it and wouldn't pay $100 for a soft cover book. Even if I signed all five volumes.

So we aborted last night's upload until tomorrow when we can call KDP, but I doubt the answer will favor color.

Technically, a frontispiece would have a color plate and not be printed directly on the same paper as the prose. But that's a feature KDP or any "for-free" self-publishing service offers at the present time.

That's not to say down the road someday it won't be.

But it looks like the frontispieces will be black and white.

On cream paper.

But black and white.

BTW, here is the frontispiece for the third book. In stunning color that perfectly reflects them themes and quote to accompany it.

Which is why we are so attached to the color.

Because the colors themselves are a sort ot "subtext" to each book's mood.

It's a darn shame to lose them.

Color or No Color: That is the Question

So in keeping with the nineteenth century/vintage feel of the Before the Blood story line, these five books won't have chapter heading art as the other books do.

But each book will have a frontispiece and a quote.

Here's my dilemma: the colors in the art are amazing. And the artist, Topher Gleason, incorporated tiny details into the art that aren't readily visible in black and white.

But frontispieces aren't generally in color (of course, older books were all hardcover and these, for the time being, will be softcover).

An interior color image will be more expensive than a black and white one, but it is just one image.

And the colors do tie in with theme - at least the first three do (I don't have the last two yet).

Here are the frontispieces for the first two books (the third image is a copy, and the colors aren't as vibrant, so I'm not attaching that one yet).

One Nearly Done, Four More to Go

On Saturday I met with my editor Colleen Robbins to review her notes on the BryonySeries prequel Before the Blood.

The novel is unfinished on purpose and consists of five parts, also unfinished on purpose, that will be published in 2019 in five separate installments.

She had typed up her comments on each of the five parts, which we reviewed. She had also edited the first manuscript, which she felt only needed a light copyedit.

You know the meeting will go well when the open line is, "First of all: well done," and the last one is "an excellent read."

So I spent Saturday making the changes, formatting the manuscript,and then sending it Rebekah to scroll through my formatting.

Sue Midlock had already made and sent the covers.

Topher Gleason has created three of the five frontispieces.

Once Rebekah assembles the cover pieces, she can upload the manuscript to KDP and order a proof.

The goal is to release the volumes one every two months starting in January.

None of this will shake up the world, I know. Nor will these books have tremendous readership.

But to see the most complicated writing project I've undertaken finally come together after eight years of work is, well, satisfying.

And the books will always be there, just waiting for the right readers to discover them.

Art of the BryonySeries: Topher Gleason

An exhibit of BryonySeries-related art by four of the artists who created book covers and interior illustrations for books in the BryonySeries art is currently on display at the Book and Bean Cafe in Joliet through the month of October.

This week, I'm sharing photos from exhibit's installation on Sept. 3. All four artists are taking commissions.

Today's featured artist is Topher (Christopher) Gleason. Topher created the book cover and interior illustrations for Staked!, the cover for the holiday edition of Visage, the cover for the short story Snowbell, and is in the process of creating frontispieces for all five volumes of the upcoming novel Before the Blood, which is the prequel to the BryonySeries trilogy.

Topher Gleason enjoys painting and writing. Topher’s art is normally reserved for family and a few close friends, but after the suggestions of those close to Topher, he has decided to share his work. Gleason is currently working on two novels. Topher uses watercolor and ink as his medium.

2nd At-Home Writing Retreat Day No. Five

Still planning to spend the rest of the evening fleshing out some scenes, and because of it, I decided to post the blog now.

Except for the fleshing out, the draft of the final book is done and ready for editing.

What helped is I cut an entire scene I planned to write because it no longer worked. What a time-saver!

It's an interesting feeling to finish a draft of a story that originated in my head since 1985. I've been semi-actively working on this prequel since 2011 and actively (as in spending nearly every weekend and even rising extra early on some days to write) since 2014.

Will I look forward to Saturdays in the same way? (Probably. Still have more books to write).

But it will be different. The structures of those stories will be less complicated and less all-consuming, leaving me time for other projects.

Of course, there still is much fiddling needed with Before the Blood before I can call it completely finished. I still have plenty of self-editing to do, and I have an entire checklist of concepts I plan to revisit.

And that's before I work on my editor's changes.

But unless my editor wants me to add anything substantial, the raw part of creation, for this story, is done.

Tomorrow, Rebekah and I will spend the day catching up on neglected BryonySeries tasks. And then Monday, back to work!

For anyone who cheered me on (even if you have no intention of reading it), thank you. It made a difference.

2nd At-Home Writing Retreat Day No. Three

This morning started on an extremely high note.

I sent a scene with a major medical development to my nurse/gore comrade for his take. He wrote the scene back to me in medical terminology.

In short, I nailed it. Go, me!!!

And now, the rest of the day.

Once again I modified my "homework" based on where my muse roamed and how long it took to tackle each section.

Overall, I'm pleased with development, slightly concerned about being somewhat behind (although I did manage to adjust for an entire section I'd forgotten to add to the mix), and fairly hopeful about hitting goal by the end of Saturday.

Unfortunately, I only have part of tomorrow afternoon available for writing, so I scheduled only a small, but extremely significant, bit. And then I have another medium bit for Saturday morning before a dentist appointment. The rest of Saturday is reserved for a major section. I'm hoping some of these will take less time than planned to work in the two overlooked sections.

That said, I'm still one scene short on time, and only outlined another, which means these still need writing.

2nd At-Home Writing Retreat Day No. Two

How can one feel productive and non-productive all on the same day?

But that is how I felt by turns.

Although I modified my writing schedule somewhat (my muse lit up for more scenes than others, and I went with it), I felt on top of the game or even ahead when I noticed I forgot about one entire scene and had to rearrange the remaining ones to make room.

And then tonight, with major description left to write, I found another scene I missed. So I tacked it onto the one that follows with it for Friday afternoon and will hope for the best.

Yet...

What's left still feels doable.

I may just finish a workable draft of the fifth and final book of Before the Blood before Saturday passes into Sunday.

I'll still have to edit it all, of course. And fill in some minor pieces as I do so.

But I can do that while my editor works on the first four.

And by then I'll know if any unexpected developments will require any further adjusting of books one through four.

I can glimpse the finish line. It's been an amazing journey.

But I still have some miles left to go. Better not nap yet.

2nd At-Home Writing Retreat Day No. One

Last night, I divided the remaining draft work for the fifth novel of Before the Blood into smaller tasks.

And then I assigned several per day, deadlines for the non-work writing, if you will.

I'm almost on task, and I'm encouraged I will see the end of most of the initial draft by the end of Saturday.

To get there, I shall have to work my muse extra hard. I pray it holds up. My muse can get kinda lazy.

Of Sandwiches and Baby Cheetahs

A couple months ago, a writer commented to me about the difficulty of finding story ideas.

I sent back a replay about finding story ideas anywhere, including random thoughts. I gave a long line of ideas as they as the flew out of my thoughts culminating with "a baby cheetah appears on your porch and asks for a sandwich."

In the early days of WriteOn Joliet, my former co-leader started offering an optional writing assignment a month to get people's creativity flowing, a tradition we've kept. So for our August meeting, I suggested this silly topic.

One member wrote hers early and misunderstood the topic. She substituted "monkey" for "cheetah."

Another member also wrote his early and posted it on the WriteOn Joliet Facebook page. 

One of my sons, who doesn't belong to the group, loved the idea, may write a piece, and now wants a baby cheetah. 

So even if you don't like to write, if you'd like a hilarious time listening to the pieces (while drinking some excellent coffee from the Book and Bean Cafe...and sandwiches!), pop into our Aug. 16 meeting. 

We'll be there from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Joliet Public Library, 3395 Black Road in Joliet.

I don't have a stock photo of a baby cheetah to post here. But I can promise you plenty of gifs are out there (I've been sending them to my son).

But here's an illustration of a sandwich. 

Because you know, if you give a writer a sandwich, he/she's gonna want a baby cheetah to go with it.

"Heroism in the Workplace" Tour Host: Topher Gleason

I scheduled this particular blog stop for today because I feel its topic is appropriate for Memorial Day, a day to commemorate heroism.

While heroism in the workplace (or the home or anywhere else) is not the same as losing one's life on the battlefield for freedom, standing up for one's beliefs or for the sake of another is never easy.

I find such actions inspiring as does Topher Gleason, Customer Experience Manager at Digital Dealership System, who hosted me on his LinkedIn page today.

On his LinkedIn page, Topher describes himself in the following way: "I strive to ensure excellent service for clients with no objection to traveling a majority of the time. Seventeen years sales experience, eight years sales training experience and seven years management experiences, makes me a very well rounded game changer.

"I am an excellent communicator with the ability to do both online and in-person demonstrations to one or five hundred plus.

"I have a fruitful sales track record with ability to bond effectively in all mediums."

Topher not only tries to model heroism, he believes in mentoring (He is a former Big Brother) and inspiring others in word and deed. I tried to write a post that reflected those characteristics.

In May, I'm tackling one item on my marketing bucket list.

I'm going on tour with the BryonySeries. And I'm not leaving home.

You see, instead of moving from state to to state and bookstore to bookstore, I'm moving from blog to blog, each with its own theme and "flavor," if you will.

No "Story Round-Up," just some Community News (April 19, 2018)

Actually, I had this ready to post yesterday before dashing off to my WriteOn Joliet meeting last night, so yesterday was just plain...full (and full of forgetfulness).

But with upcoming training at work and new processes to learn, I used the last week and a half to catch up on those minute details of half-done projects before the routine changes up.

Now I'm not exactly caught up. But the backlog is about 85 percent gone, a huge relief.

So just one story and it's not even one I wrote. And then the briefs I did edit and assemble from news release. And then switching over to work.
