Instead of Cooking

This weekend was cookbook cooking weekend, except Rebekah and I didn't cook at all.

Once a month, we schedule a time to cook four recipes from Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles from "Bryony" to help promote the cookbook, which is a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties atat www.bbbswillgrundy.org.

Order the cookbook at www.bryonyseries.com.

We both like cooking, so it's overall fun to work together preparing, and sampling, vintage foods.

But with a big project looming on Monday, I had some extra work to do. Rebekah also has a major work project tomorrow, so she prepared for it this weekend, too.

Coupled with a side project (a Joliet resident's memoir) and editing the fifth book of Before the Blood (I made it through chapter 23), the weekend flew past.

So if you missed last week's recipe, you can still try it at https://www.bryonyseries.com/sue-s-diner.

But since we didn't cook, we need to figure out dinner. And I have some social media to schedule, and walk to get in.

How did Sunday night arrive so fast?

Nothing Irish

How this for neat and compact?

This morning: worked on editing Before the Blood.

Noon: A very long lunch (and way to short of a visit) with one of my best friends from eighth grade. We had such a great time, we forgot to commemorate the occasion with a selfie.

Afternoon: Finished up some of last week's "real" work and tackled some of Monday's work since I have a big project to do that day.

Early evening: Household chores with two of the kids.

Somehow, I still managed to log in nearly 12,000 steps. Not the 23,000 I try to hit most days, but I'll take it.

Tonight: Rebekah brought home a medium Gloria Jean's. It's just me, the coffee, and the manuscript until my energy tanks.

I really, really, really would like to complete the editing by Oct. 7.

But Oct. 7 is a busy day. So I need one very good night tonight as it's impossible to get much done fiction-wise during the week.

Hope your weekend is/has been full of many blessings.

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Sept. 23 through Sept. 28

In a word: WOW!

Wow! Wow! Wow!

A HUGE, heartfelt THANK YOU to each and every person who took a few minutes to stop by Book and Bean Cafe in Joliet to check out the "Art of the BryonySeries" exhibit and meet the artists: Matt Coundiff, Terri Ellinger, Topher Gleason, and Sue Midlock.

The last guest left at four minutes to closing time.

If you missed it, there's still time to see it.

The very nice Dick Schuster from Joliet Community Television (JCTV) came out and did a 15-minute segment. He is planning to air the episode several times a day through the next mont (the exhibit comes down on Oct. 31).

For the station's program schedule, visit cityofjoliet.info/residents/jctv.

Also, the exhibit will remain up another month. I do have plenty of photos to share and am hoping to make albums on the BryonySeries Facbeook page in another week or so.

To learn more about each individual artist, visit the story that ran in The Herald-News:

Into the Words

This morning I woke up about an hour earlier than usual.

I had missed a dose of medicine last night (got busy, thought I'd taken it) and felt its lack. After taking the next one right on schedule, I debated the merits of either going back to sleep or getting up and editing chapter eighteen of the fifth book of Before the Blood.

I chose the latter.

Work and life keep me busy enough that I never, and I mean never (if fact, my discipline surprises even me) open up my manuscript during the week. Thoughts and ideas often come to mind while I'm walking, and I will jot them down.

But writing or editing fiction of any substance? Never.

Today, I chose pretend over sleep. And I'm feeling the tired effects of it now, along with the elation of spending two hours into an extremely magical place where consonants and vowels are transformed into an alternate reality.

It was nice to break from routine.

And I'll keep reminding myself of it through every yawn and swig of dark roast coffee.

Thank You, Dear Readers

Yesterday morning when I posted the blog, I was very close to another milestone, which quietly arrived without notice or fanfare from me as I worked.

For bloggers that are famous and bloggers that attract huge traffic to their sites, this milestone may not seem like much.

But for me, who started with nothing except an idea and a desire to build, it's enormous.

I'm talking about total reader views.

Yesterday, I hit 300,000 total views since I began this blog on Aug. 1, 2010.

Yes, it's taken a long time to reach it.

Back in 2010, when my daughter Sarah Stegall offered to help collect recipes for the BryonySeries cookbook, she became so entranced with the project, she created the Bryony Facebook page as a Mother's Day gift (I had no idea how to start a page and probably still would need help today) and the next month, she offered to build a website (She had no idea how to build one. But she had the time, at the time, to figure it out and she did).

Then she created a Twitter account and a Flickr account (we've never used the latter). I'd read authors should have something called a blog. She researched that and set up this blog. then she researched SEO, keywords, and hashtags. For the first year, I wrote the blog (based on Sarah's ideas because I had no idea what to write) and she tagged them because tagging was a concept I could not grasp.

We cheered the first few views, the first double digit views, the first 50, the first 100.

With blogging nearly every day, it took almost six years to the day to reach that first 100,000 in total views. And we cheered that, too.

The next 100,000 took just fifteen months. That number got a bit of a boost late last year when I began blogging twice a day to attract a wider audience. Since the start of the blog, I'd posted links to all my feature stories on Friday, a story round-up. But the bulk of my work since I became an employee in 2014 doesn't have a byline and yet contains valuable information for the Joliet area community: local events and the great projects people are doing.

So I began adding links to those in a second blog, posted in the evening, as a way of letting readers know those stories are available, too. The analytics show some people are reading them.

And we attained the third 100,000 in slightly less than nine months.

Since that time, my youngest daughter Rebekah Baran has become my partner in all things BryonySeries.

Every now and again someone mentions to me he or she reads my blog. Every now and then someone posts a comment on Facebook. Overall, I really have no idea who you area. Comments on the blog are even more sparse than the ones on Facebook.

But the analytics also show all those views aren't (albeit some probably are). I hardly ever have huge jumps in traffic that would alert me to bots.

Most of the traffic comes from Facebook, followed by Twitter, and then Google.

Whoever you area, I'm thankful. Thankful, thankful, thankful, thankful.

And so I'm sharing this with you today. Because it's your milestone, too, probably more than mine.

Without you, dear readers, there would be no milestone to celebrate.

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Sept. 16 through Sept. 21

For the first time in a very long time, I am right on schedule for a Friday. And I feel pretty good about it (although it's early, I know).

So many projects are coming together right now: the cooking "how" I pitched to The Herald-News a couple years ago, the BryonySeries prequel finally in editing. It's very satisfying.

And I'm actually getting a weekend away this weekend for a very cool experience. Recap next week.

For those who follow Bertrand the Mouse on Instagram (scroll down for information) and wonder where he went, here's the story. I didn't post photos of him during the at-home writing retreat (he was't a priority, sorry little mouse), and then the next week was plain crazy (under the weather, coming back to work after being off a week).

So I took him out for a swanky dinner and showing off photos of what HE did during my writing week. Two are posted on his page with more to come.

Now, where to find my official writing, me on social media, and my two stories, since this week was a catching up week?

BryonySeries Throwback Thursday: New Writer's Group Begins Feb. 2, 2012

Monday, January 30, 2012

New Writer's Group Begins Feb. 2, 2012

The Three Rivers Arts Council (TRAC), 413 Mondamin, Minooka, is hosting a new writer's group, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. every first and third Thursday of the month. Stop in with your latest (or not-so-latest) project, enjoy some coffee, and share and learn with fellow writers. We're laid back and friendly, so please, don't be shy!

Friday night's writer's assessment was tons of fun (Yes, assessments is how we writers define fun). I had the opportunity to read a variety of fiction, and also, in some cases, had the privilege of being the first set of eyes (other than the author) to read those printed words. In addition, we raised a little money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties, so it was a great night.

From January's two assessments came a core group of people eager to meet more often to give and receive feedback on their works. Since writing is a solitary occupation, it was refreshing for me to meet others whose idea of a perfect evening is transferring their creative ideas from brain to paper.

On another "note," two of my sons accompanied me to TRAC's first open mic night. Timothy, who sings well, but only for family, friends, and empty warehouses, took the stage with three songs and "wowed" those present.

Way to go, Timothy!

Wrapping Up Another Project (And It's Not a Book)

So I project I pitched to The Herald-News a few years ago is finally coming to fruit-ion.

I can't share the details here, but be sure to check out tomorrow's Herald-News. What was once a good idea because a really nice collaboration of many different talents.

It's very satisfying to watch it all come together. I hope you enjoy it!:)
