Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Aug. 24 to Aug. 30

 Good morning!

I have ten stories to share with you today at the bottom of this post with more stories going live over the weekend, especially since I'm working this Saturday and Sunday. So be sure to check back on The Herald-News site: shawlocal.com/the-herald-news.

But before the stories, I have a list of additional updates, resources, and information. Please check them out, too.

Finally, if you'd like to find more kindness in your life, consider this book.

And have a great Friday!

Event Updates

The BryonySeries Back-To-School display is now up at The Book Market. So do check it out if you're in the area.

Also, we held Bertrand's Back-To-School Birthday Bash at The Book Market last Saturday, so here is a recap of that event.

We also have four events in September (so far). I'll share more about those events next week.

BryonySeries books-in-progress

House on Top of the Hill: Third book in the BryonySeries Limbo trilogy. I now have a good working draft of the entire book, with all but eight chapters that are ready for final edits. I should be able to finish the eight at the next at-home writing retreat in early September. We are still estimating a late 2024 release date for this book, with copies available for sale at WriteOn Joliet's anthology release party on Dec. 6.

The Adventures of Cornell Dyer: No updates here in a very long time, mostly because Timothy and Daniel are super busy with school on top of work (and plenty of work-related traveling). However, I outlined a "bonus" book that is intended for distribution at Bicentennial's "Ye Olde Mayfest" event in 2025. Here is a recap of the 2024 event.

Timothy said his concept for the next book in the actual series will be slightly dark ("slightly" because it's for kids, too) and will involve an old toy store. We are also working on the last book in the series (but it's not the final book, if that makes sense). Timothy is actually writing that one. In order to make progress on any of this, Timothy is hoping to schedule a "Cornell breakfast." But Timothy and Daniel are very busy with work and school right now. We've scheduled and broke several Cornell breakfasts in 2023 and 2024. Our last one was July 2022. So we are LONG, LONG, LONG overdue.

Brainy Ann: The fifth book in The Girls of the BryonySeries is outlined and the first chapter is written, hurray! Jennifer Wainwright, who welcomed her first child into the world in April, has already started working on the cover portrait. I've neglected this book for a few months and hope to revisit it soon. We'd like to release it in late 2024, but 2024 has been a challenging year. We shall see.

Jennifer designed the cover portraits for "Julie and the Too-Hard Homework," "Katie and the Big Fear," "Summer Sisters." and "Karla Joins In," as well as the frontispiece for Lycanthropic Summer.

Rebekah is also slowly (very, very slowly) updating the BryonySeries YouTube and Pinterest accounts. And she' catching up with Kindles for some of the BryonySeries books. So do watch for those.

And finally...

Ed Calkins, Steward of Tara, has sent me twenty-one chapters to edit for his third book in his Ruthless trilogy. His first book is "Ruthless," his second is "The Fifth," and he is also the author of "Denise Unland's Irish Genealogy."

For books and more information about the series, visit bryonyseries.com.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Sue's Diner is a fictional restaurant in the fictional Munsonville that only exists in the BryonySeries.

Each Wednesday, we post a new recipe. The recipe is either featured in one of our cookbooks, will be featured in an upcoming cookbook, or is just an "extra" we want to share with you.

Check out the recipe here.

WRITERS

If you're a writer anywhere in the world, you're welcome to join WriteOn Joliet's Facebook pageWe're based in Joliet, Illinois, but we love to meet and interact with writers outside our area, too.

If you'd like to officially join WriteOn Joliet, we have two tiers of dues and two ways to attend meetings. We also have a marketing arm that's getting longer every year. Check us out at writeonjoliet.com.

I also suggest this book: Little Book of Revision: A Checklist for Fiction Writers. It's exactly as it says. Each page some with one suggestion for revision. The rest of the page is blank, so you can add your own notes. All proceeds benefit WriteOn Joliet.

BryonySeries Back-To-School Book Special at The Book Market (With Ribbit-Ribbits and More!)

Be sure to pop into The Book Market in Crest Hill and check out the BryonySeries Back-To-School display.

We've curated six books that include either a "school" or "learning" theme and included books for preschoolers all the way through adult.

For instance, "Staked!" includes a character whose mother insists she intensely study the paranormal on top of her regular school.

"The Phoenix" includes a "school" for newly turned vampires.

The characters in "Cornell Dyer and the Never Robbers" get schooled in life.

In "Cornell Dyer and the Calcium Deficient Bones," supernatural super sleuth Cornell Dyer serves as a substitute science teacher in a school where all classrooms have classroom skeletons - and the school is in a perpetual and uneven state of remodeling.

And Bertrand the Mouse has two books: one helps kids count and the other that helps them learn their ABCs.

We also have special prices on Ribbit-Ribbits with BryonySeries book purchases (while supplies last)

And we have free miniature book bags and water tumblers with the purchase of any BryonySeries book (again, while supplies last).

Ribbit specials and free gifts apply to any BryonySeries book, not just the ones on the display table.

But where are the other BryonySeries books located?

The other BryonySeries titles are located in the local author section, which is slightly behind and to the left of the display table.

Or just ask Jan Staley, owner of The Book Market to help you find the other books.

Jan is super friendly and always ready to help customers.

And for BryonySeries customers who live out of state...

...please visit our promotions page and reach out to bryonyseries@gmail.com with any questions.

At this time, we do not ship "swag." But we are happy to work out discounts on BryonySeries books to promote the love of reading to all ages.

Finally, Cindy sent me photos yesterday morning about something extra special she's crocheting for our Back-To-School display. We will post about that separately when they are ready to go.

And she's already working on her Halloween Ribbit-Ribbits.

Happy Thursday!

Sue's Diner: Werewolf Sliders

With the Midwest in the middle of a heat wave right now, we're offering a perfect recipe to try.

Instead of cooking, serve up Werewolf Sliders for dinner tonight. The recipe is mostly assembly - you only need to heat up store-bought pulled pork.

This recipe doesn't appear in our fundraising cookbook Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles from "Bryony."

However, the recipe for Werewolf Sliders does appear in GRRR: Twelve paw-tastic werewolf-themed recipes that Rebekah created during the COVID-19 pandemic.

So why wait until Halloween? Try this recipe on the Sue's Diner page on the BryonySeries website.

But try the recipe this week. It will be gone next week. A new recipe will take it's place.

If you have any troubleshooting questions or comments, email us at bryonyseries@gmail.com.

By the way, Sue's Diner is only real in the BryonySeries world. But didn't Timothy do a great job making the page look like a real menu at a vintage diner?

Here is the full diner page: bryonyseries.com/sue-s-diner.

All proceeds from "Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles From 'Bryony'" benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties at bbbswillgrundy.org.

Recap of Bertrand's Back-To-School Birthday Book Bash

Remember when Facebook parties were popular, about ten years ago?

That was the original plan for Bertrand's Back-To-School Birthday Book Bash when Bertrand the Mouse came into our lives in August 2013.

Of course, not all ideas become tangible right away. Every year, we talked about hold the event. And every year the developing just didn't happen.

And in our case, we eventually let the Facebook party idea fade away in favor of an in-person event as Bertrand's mission of bringing the joys of reading to children (and adults, too) evolved.

Of course, the best place to host a birthday party for a crocheted mouse whose mission is books is The Book Market in Crest Hill, which is FILLED with new books, old books, and rare books.

We held our first birthday party for Bertrand the Mouse in 2023, and I missed it due to a trip to the ER.

But I didn't miss it this year - and what a great day it was!

Bertrand's Back-To-School Birthday Book Bash included free games-to-go, free miniature chocolate cupcakes with sprinkles, free BryonySeries water bottles and miniature backpacks, free crocheted mice with purchase, and discounted Ribbit-Ribbits (other crocheted items) with purchase.

We sold four BryonySeries books across various ages and interests ("Squeak," "Staked!" "Bertrand's Day on the Lake," and "The Fifth") and adopted out three mice.

One Book Market customer was leaving with his purchase when our display table caught his eye. He bought a book, adopted a mouse, posted on social media how much he enjoyed both (Janet Staley, The Book Market's owner, let me know), and then sent a friend request.

We also had some great "book" conversations during those two hours.

A fifteen-year-old discussed at length the multi-volume biography he's writing and asked questions about the various ways he can publish that.

Another couple stopped at The Book Market on their way to a wedding because the wife was looking for two books in particular: a Jim Morrison biography she used to own and another set of books whose names she could not remember.

While she hunted on the phone, we talked about all sorts of books. I learned the husband loved fantasy and dragons, so I directed him to a WriteOn Joliet member's books in the local author section, since her Daraga series is fantasy and includes dragons.

As we talked and talked, the wife still couldn't find the book set. She said it was like a "college on a shelf" and she wanted the set with green covers.

I said, "Oh, you mean the Harvard Classics?" I pulled it up right away on my phone - the green set, because my parents used to own it.

She was thrilled, and Jan immediately took her to the Harvard Classics section in The Book Market (because The Book Market has just about every type of book you can imagine).

When they left with their purchases (including a book and adopted mouse from our table), the husband shook my hand and said, "It's been a pleasure."

And that really encapsulated the heart of why we celebrate Bertrand's birthday.

So for those who missed the celebration...

...read a book.

Any book.

Buy a book, get a library card and borrow a book, or read a book from the stack that's accumulating from your bedside.

Repeat the above steps with the children in your life - if you are so fortunate to have children in your life.

I'm not going to lecture you on the joys of reading. You will understand once you experience them for yourself - and no lecture will be necessary. And if you're  reader, you already know, well...you already know.

Finally, in honor of Bertrand's birthday, we are offering individualized discounts on BryonySeries books through Aug. 31.

Scroll through available BryonySeries books on Amazon (our store is still down, most likely until Timothy finishes school in February).

And then email us at bryonyseries@gmail.com and let's make a birthday deal!

Water Therapy

When I a child, I thought like a child in that I mistakenly assumed backyard swimming pools, park district swimming pools, beach clubs, and summer vacations by lakes were the norm - because that is what my family did.

But a lack of resources (either time, money, or both) and husbands who were afraid of water (due to near-drowning experiences, perfectly understandable) meant that I've spent most of my adult life away from water.

My return water came in 2015 when I visited Sarah and her family in North Carolina and went out on Falls Lake in their pontoon boat for a day of boating and swimming.

Because I enjoyed it so much, her husband Sean always took one day off work when I came out so we could also go out on the boat. Twice, Sarah also made the two-hour drive to Wilmington to the Atlantic Ocean.

But I haven't spent a week in North Carolina since 2019 (COVID, finances, other responsibilities at home). I'm hoping May/June 2025 will break that trend since my grandson Lucas will graduate from high school and (of course) I'll want to be there.

This past weekend, I spent two afternoons in a swimming pool with family, the best two summer weekends since 2019. I was originally going to post a few photos but - honestly - I was having too much fun to take photos.

Instead, here are three videos of water beauty from earlier North Caroline trips. Enjoy - and Happy Monday!

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Aug. 17 to Aug. 23

Good morning!

I have eight stories to share with you today at the bottom of this post with more stories going live over the weekend. So be sure to check back on The Herald-News site: shawlocal.com/the-herald-news.

Simply click on the link of the story that looks interesting to you. But before the stories, I have a list of additional updates, resources, and information. Please check them out, too.

Finally, if you'd like to find more kindness in your life, consider this book.

And have a great Friday!

Event Updates

Tomorrow we're hosting Bertrand's Back-To-School Birthday Bash at The Book Market in Crest Hill.

Don't live nearby? Can't make it? Send Bertrand your best birthday wishes to bryonyseries@gmail.com.

And since Bertrand's main role in "life" is to bring the joy of reading to children (and adults!), the best way to celebrate is to buy a book...any book. It doesn't have to be a BryonySeries book.

Or pop into your local library and borrow a book.

And then, most importantly, READ that book.

But...

If you'd like to share BryonySeries books with someone you know, message us at the above email. We'll work out a special discount just for you (and extra-special bulk rates if you purchase more than one Bertrand the Mouse book). That offer is good through Aug. 31, in honor of reading, back-to-school, and, of course, Bertrand's birthday.

Last Friday night, five WriteOn Joliet authors (which includes the BryonySeries) showcased our work at New Orleans North in Joliet. And on then Saturday morning, BryonySeries made bargain-based deals with our booth attendees at Stuff on Bluff."

Well, both days turned out to be adventurous. I recapped both in "A Rainy, Successful Weekend."

A full month of BryonySeries-related activities can be found at bryonyseries.com/calendar-of-events.

BryonySeries books-in-progress

House on Top of the Hill: Third book in the BryonySeries Limbo trilogy. I now have a good working draft of the entire book, with all but eight chapters that are ready for final edits. Baking Therapy

When Rebekah was a little girl, she dreamed of becoming a pastry chef, a dream that hasn't worked out for her (yet).

She will occasionally bake a treat to keep her skills up (and because she enjoys it). But with diabetes running in the family and everyone trying to be very health conscious, she doesn't go all out with baking most of the time.

Still, for Rebekah, baking is relaxing. so when Rebekah's feeling stressed, she will bake something.

Well, we've had plenty of stress the last few years, and this summer proved to be extremely stressful.

So one day after work, Rebekah went all out.

She baked two loaves of buttermilk bread (we gobbled up one before I could take a photo), two loves of banana bread, a few dozen chocolate chip cookies with some vegan chips she wanted to try (the cookies were flat but delicious), and the ricotta cheesecake for my birthday that she waited to make until I felt better (as you can see, we wasted no time digging in).

Of course, baking didn't chase all the stress away. But we could deliciously drown our sorrows while we griped.

How about you? What's your antidote for high stress days?

Sue's Diner: Stewed Fruit with Cream

Although the original recipe calls for stewed fruit, we used this delicious sauce over fresh fruit, which shows how versatile this vanilla sauce is.

You might find other ways to use it, too.

Today's recipe appears in the cookbook Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles from "Bryony."

Here is the background on where this week's recipe falls in the BryonySeries novel Bryony

Melissa is thrilled when John finally invites her to a picnic away from the mansion, just the two of them. Of course, John feels Bryga packed enough food to feed them for a week, but even that careless remark couldn’t completely dampen Melissa’s excitement of being alone with John.

This recipe was adapted from the nineteenth century cookbook Miss Beecher’s domestic receiptbook: designed as a supplement to her Treatise on domestic economy.

A Rainy, Successful Weekend

"Into each life some rain must fall, some days must be dark and dreary."

This poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is very BryonySeries since the mother of Henry Matthews loved Longfellow and often quoted the above line.

But although the artists row at New Orleans North was rained out three hours into the event due to a sudden and turbulent storm, and although rain periodically fell hard during Stuff on Bluff the following day with sparse foot traffic, neither event was "dark and dreary," only the skies.

We experienced plenty of kindness, from the organizers to our fellow artists, who worked together on Friday night to ensure everyone's safety and minimal loss of product.

We experienced plenty of smiles. Not one person left our booth without feeling good about stopping there, our main goal - always.

This isn't a compensatory attitude for poor sales. Because sales were good (twenty books, twenty-five mystery quotes, three shirts), and - for the first time - we sold across all subgenres in the BryonySeries over the two events.

We also sold one "Nine Months of Kindness."

Because of the rain, we packed up most items in Jasmine's nylon backpacks with out logo as our gift to our customers.

And this Saturday, the weather will not matter for Bertrand's Back-To-School Birthday Bash, since the event will be inside. Doesn't the thought of singing "Happy Birthday" to a crocheted mouse make you smile?

Happy Tuesday!

Bertrand's Back-To-School Birthday Bash is Saturday

Have you met Bertrand the Mouse?

Bertrand's always on the go and happy to lend a helping…paw…to bring the joys of reading to children.

Actually, Bertrand wants people of all ages to experience the joys of reading. So the best birthday present you can give Bertrand is to bring home a book (or two) to read and enjoy.

So he's inviting YOU and all your friends and family to his Back-To-School Birthday Bash.

The party will be from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 at The Book Market in Crest Hill.

We will have miniature cupcakes, party hats, BryonySeries books for sale, birthday games-to-go, and crocheted mice for adoption (while supplies last) with the purchase of any Bertrand the Mouse book.

We will also have complimentary BryonySeries tumblers and backpacks with the purchase of any BryonySeries book, perfect for fun, back-to-school reading on the go.

Ever sing Happy Birthday to a crocheted mouse? Here's your chance!

Hoping this post makes you smile on this first day of the new week.

Happy Monday!

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Aug. 10 to Aug. 16

Good morning!

I have ten stories to share with you today with stories posting over the weekend. So be sure to check back on The Herald-News site: shawlocal.com/the-herald-news.

Tonight until late, five WriteOn Joliet authors (which includes the BryonySeries) will be showcasing out work at New Orleans North in Joliet (so please stop by our tents).

And then first thing tomorrow morning, BryonySeries will be making bargain-based deals with our booth attendees at Stuff on Bluff." Come out and make a shopping deal with us!

But before the stories, I have a list of additional resources and information. Please check them out, too.

Finally, if you'd like to find more kindness in your life, consider this book.

And have a great Friday!

If you need editing or help with self-publishing, check out dmbaranunland.com.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Daily updates: I haven't posted anything on Twitter/X (except a daily Bible verse) since September I can no longer schedule posts in advance. I'm not sure yet how to manage the account without that option. But you're welcome to follow me at @Denise_Unland61.

BryonySeries stuff: I used to curated content relating to the BryonySeries on Twitter/X at @BryonySeries and still post assorted related content at facebook.com/BryonySeriesyoutube.com/user/BryonySeries, and themes of each book in the BryonySeries at pinterest.com/bryonyseries.

Again, not sure yet about the direction of the BryonySeries Twitter/X account. Still mulling that over.
