Sue's Diner: Roasted Root Vegetable Medley

This Roasted Root Vegetable Medley recipe is part of the Thanksgiving menu that's featured in the BryonySeries cookbook: Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles from "Bryony," which is a permanent fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties.

All of these recipes on this Thanksgiving menu are referenced in the novel BryonyThe complete menu is found in the cookbook.

Here is the explanation from the cookbook:

For the Marchellis’ first Thanksgiving in Munsonville, Melissa’s little brother Brian shows off the depth of his newly acquired culinary skills, under the direction of his mentor, Steve Barnes, the village maintenance man.

You can try the Roasted Root Vegetable Medley on the Sue's Diner page on the BryonySeries website

But try the recipe this week. It will be gone some time next week. A new recipe from the Thanksgiving menu will take it's place.

If you have any troubleshooting questions or comments, email us at bryonyseries@gmail.com.

(Did you catch Bertrand the Mouse's photo bomb?)

By the way, Sue's Diner is only real in the BryonySeries world. But didn't Timothy do a great job making the page look like a real menu at a vintage diner?

Here is the full diner page: bryonyseries.com/sue-s-diner. You can't really order, of course (wouldn't it be great if you could?).

Purple Music Roses (And Where You Can Get Yours)

So Jan Stack, the lovely youth services clerk at the Joliet Public Library, with which WriteOn Joliet has a partnership, recently crafted fifty stunning purple music roses for me.

As you may know, both piano music and purple roses are motifs that appear in quite a few books in the BryonySeries

Below this photo you'll find some quote examples from the books and a closeup of the gorgeous paper roses in several shades of purple.

And below THAT, you'll learn where to find these purple music roses this year (and how you can take one home).

Some quotes

Skidding on satin slippers, Melissa fled past the croquet grounds and then the tea garden, in full bloom with Henry’s forbidden purple roses. "Bryony"

With a flourish, John removed his hand from behind his back and offered Melissa his gift. It was a bouquet of one dozen purple roses. "Visage"

Melissa sat at her desk correcting papers by the tiny lamp. It was the only light in the entire room except for the pink candle she burned near the vase of the fresh purple roses she always insisted Kellen buy for her. "Staked!"

For every stem on his experimental roses, roses that were bare when he left them that morning, roses that never bloomed despite years of tending and experimentation, every stem now bore a deep purple bud. "Before The Blood: Henry Matthews"

She dutifully placed them into cut glass vases and filled the room with their fragrance, but more than once her eyes strayed to Mr. Matthews' landscape oils with the tiny purple rose painted in each corner, and then to the chair near the fire where Mr. Simons had sat last night. "Before The Blood: Bryony Simons"

On other nights, Henry abandoned his art and restlessly wandered the vast Simons estate, peering past the seedlings and into the ground to their roots, wracking his mind as to why annuals and perennials once fascinated him, why his uncle built him a greenhouse at Arcadia, and why Henry spent years crossbreeding roses to create a purple variety. What value did it hold? "The Phoenix"

The final room boasted wine-hued carpeting and wallpaper, shelves overflowing with books on most walls, mahogany desks with typewriters and leather chairs, a settee with crimson and gold upholstery, and vases of fragrant purple roses. She strolled across the room and touched a velvety petal. Fresh. Weird. "House on Top of the Hill"

How can I get one?

These purple music roses are only available at The Book Market in Crest Hill (starting Wednesday and while supplies last) and at these two events:

"Light Up The Holidays North Pole Christmas Market: 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 29 (the day after Thanksgiving), Renaissance Center, 204 N. Ottawa St., Joliet

WriteOn Joliet 8th Annual Anthology Release Party: 6 to 8 p.m., December 5, Joliet Public Library, 3395 Black Road, Joliet.

These purple music roses are not for sale.

The purple music roses are a "thank you" gift from the BryonySeries team for purchasing approximately $15 worth of books.

That means any novel, any two combination of cookbooks, any two books in The Adventures of Cornell Dyer series, any two books in the Girls of the ByronySeries, or any three books in the Bertrand the Mouse series.

However, we are not putting a limit on how many roses a customer may receive. They are available for EACH $15-ish BryonySeries books purchase while supplies last.

Happy Tuesday!

A Whole Lotta Event Recapping

Whenever I participated in local events, I typically promote them on this blog - and then provide a short recap a few days later.

Well, 2024 has been filled with as many challenges as 2023 and 2022, and I fell of my recapping. But the recaps are important, I think.

Organizers might like to know I'm thankful for the opportunities they provide.

Artists might like to know my definition of a successful event.

Anyone who's enjoyed a BryonySeries book (or two) might like to know I'm still getting out there.

And anyone who's curious might simply just like to know.

So here are the events I will  briefly (very briefly) recap:

Sept. 14: Spooky Night Out at HellsGate in Lockport

Sept. 24: The Book Market in Crest Hill

Sept. 27: End-Of-Summer Open Mic at the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park Theatre in Joliet

Sept. 28: Local Author Fair at the Downers Grove Public Library

Oct. 12: Panic at the Plaza in downtown Joliet.

Oct. 22: The Book Market in Crest Hill

Oct. 30: Spirits with the Spirits at Black Cat Curiosities in Joliet with WriteOn member Cean Magosky as part of the Joliet City Center Partnership's "Spirits with the Spirits" event.

Read on for a couple-line summary of the event, number of books sold, and my overall impressions.

Sept. 14: Spooky Night Out at HellsGate in Lockport

Event: Fundraiser for local charities.

Books sold: Three.

One large "Before The Blood" (contains all five installments)

"Cornell Dyer and the Eerie Lake"

"Cornell Dyer and the Old Folks Home"

Impressions: Super fun night, despite the fact I'd sprained my knee BIG TIME the previous night. Talked to lots of people and distributed lots of BryonySeries cards. Sold the large BTB to a history buff who talked to us about why he doesn't like fiction. Rebekah came up with a GREAT promotions idea for next year (if we're invited back, of course).

Sept. 24: The Book Market in Crest Hill

Event: We try to get into The Book Market once a month and hang out for four hours.

Books sold: Five

"Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles from 'Bryony"

"Snowbell"

"Bertrand's First Book of Numbers"

"Bertrand's Silly ABC Book"

 "Lycanthropic Summer"

Impressions: We always have a good time at The Book Market - and so do Bertrand the Mouse and Uncle Barty, even if they have to watch our table by themselves for awhile.

Sept. 27: End-Of-Summer Open Mic at the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park Theatre in Joliet

Event: The second open mic of 2024 hosted by Joliet's first poet laureate Uxmar Torres.

Books sold: Zero

Impressions: Book sales aren't everything! Six WriteOners attended the event. I read an excerpt from "A Year of Shadows and Moonlight, Of Gathering Blooms in the Woods," which was probably the most unusual and least understood piece read that night (not necessarily a good thing), but it gave me five minutes onstage, which always makes me a little nervous. So it's good practice for me to get back in front of the mic from time to time.

I always had at least one person at my table most of the night chatting (including one person who previously bought four BryonySeries books and wanted to talk about them). So it was a super fun night, and I'd participate again if accepted.

Sept. 28: Local Author Fair at the Downers Grove Public Library

And also a photo of Rebekah:

Event: Library event featuring authors local to the Downer's Grove area.

Books sold: One

"Katie and the Big Fear"

Impressions: Wonderful gathering of amazing writers. Grabbed plenty of bookmarks to share at future BryonySeries and WriteOn Joliet events. And I reached out to some of my contacts on behalf of two authors who are really trying to make differences in children's lives.

So in that spirit, please check out annieandfriendsadventures.com and bkstrength.com/walked-on.

Oct. 12: Panic at the Plaza in downtown Joliet.

Event: A scaled-down "crawl" event at local businesses due to construction in the city plaza. I was one of just two vendors.

Books sold: Three.

"Bryony"

"Visage"

"Bertrand's Day at the Lake"

Impressions: Well, after getting on my high horse about NEVER leaving an event early...we left early. The businesses near us had closed, the temperatures had dropped, the wind picked up, our product was blowing into the construction one, and Rebekah (who has multiple heath issues) was cold to her bones, despite layers of clothes. The vendor next to us was lovely and had beautiful jewelry. Rebekah bought earrings and this necklace for me.

Oct. 22: The Book Market in Crest Hill from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Event: Again, we try to get into The Book Market once a month.

Books sold: Two

"Year of Shadows and Moonlight, Of Gathering Blooms in the Woods"

I actually don't recall the second one.

Impressions: We always have a good time at The Book Market. If foot traffic is slow that day (and it was on this particular day), the owner Jan Staley and I spend part of the time chatting about all kinds of things.

Oct. 30: Spirits with the Spirits at Black Cat Curiosities in Joliet with WriteOn Joliet member Cean Magosky as part of the Joliet City Center Partnership's "Spirits with the Spirits" event.

Event: A Halloween-themed event in downtown Joliet, where participating businesses host different forms of entertainment. Cean and I came prepared to read original ghost stories. One person was interested in local ghost lore, so Cean shared his story, since that was exactly what that person wanted to hear.

Books sold: One book:  "Lycanthropic Summer" And we sold one mystery gift card.

Impressions: Cean and I distributed a great deal of cards: his cards, WriteOn Joliet, cards, BryonySeries cards, and double-sided cards about WriteOn Joliet's anthology release party on Dec. 5 and our 2025 radio style performance.

We also distributed maps of the other locations (we ran out, too), which people really loved.

This was only the third year for this event, so it's still catching on. Even so, people were enthusiastic, and I finally got the chance to browse Black Cat Curiosities (can't wait to go back).

Tomorrow I'll share my last few events for 2024 and a REALLY special gift with purchase, compliments of a very crafty lady.

Happy Monday!

Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Nov. 2 to Nov. 8

Good morning!

I have nine stories to share with you today at the bottom of this post with more stories going live over the weekend.

So be sure to check back on The Herald-News site: shawlocal.com/the-herald-news.

But before the stories, I have a list of additional updates, resources, and information. Please check them out, too.

And if you'd like to find more kindness in your life, consider this book.

And have a great Friday!

Event Updates

The BryonySeries Halloween display is still up at The Book Market. We were planning to take it down today, but we may now be euthanizing our cat Midnight. So the display will most likely remain up until Tuesday. So please do stop in and check it out. Along with seven curated BryonySeries books for you to browse and buy, the display features all-new Halloween Ribbit-Ribbits from Cindy - and some free gifts with purchase while supplies last.

We are also participating in four more events (so far) in November and December.

North Pole Christmas Market: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Renaissance Center, 214 N. Ottawa St., Joliet. The Christmas Market is part of the Joliet City Center Partnership's "Light Up the Holidays Festival and Parade." And we are participating in THREE unique ways this year. More details to come later.

WriteOn Joliet 8th Annual Anthology Release Party: 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 5, Joliet Public Library, 3395 Black Road, Joliet. FREE chef-created heavy appetizers and desserts and FREE photos with Santa. Chance to meet WriteOn Joliet authors and browse many varieties of locally written genres. One-stop checkout.

Plus, the ByronySeries will appear at The Book Market in Crest Hill from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on one date in November and one in December, both TBA.

BryonySeries books-in-progress

House on Top of the Hill: Third book in the BryonySeries Limbo trilogy, and the book is now live on Amazon. We are hoping print copies available for sale at WriteOn Joliet's anthology release party on Dec. 5.

The Adventures of Cornell Dyer: No updates here in a very long time, mostly because Timothy and Daniel are super busy with school on top of work (and plenty of work-related traveling). However, I outlined a "bonus" book that is intended for distribution at Bicentennial's "Ye Olde Mayfest" event in 2025. Here is a recap of the 2024 event.

Timothy said his concept for the next book in the actual series will be slightly dark ("slightly" because it's for kids, too) and will involve an old toy store. We are also working on the last book in the series (but it's not the final book, if that makes sense). Timothy is actually writing that one. In order to make progress on any of this, Timothy is hoping to schedule a "Cornell breakfast." But Timothy and Daniel are very busy with work and school right now. We've scheduled and broke several Cornell breakfasts in 2023 and 2024. Our last one was July 2022. So we are LONG, LONG, LONG overdue.

Brainy Ann: The fifth book in The Girls of the BryonySeries is outlined and the first chapter is written, hurray! Jennifer Wainwright, who welcomed her first child into the world in April, has already started working on the cover portrait. I've neglected this book for a few months and hope to revisit it soon. We wanted to release it in late 2024, but 2024 has been a challenging year. I'm shooting for early 2025.

Jennifer designed the cover portraits for "Julie and the Too-Hard Homework," "Katie and the Big Fear," "Summer Sisters." and "Karla Joins In," as well as the frontispiece for Lycanthropic Summer.

Rebekah is also slowly (very, very slowly) updating the BryonySeries YouTube and Pinterest accounts. And she' catching up with Kindles for some of the BryonySeries books. So do watch for those.

And finally...

The manuscript for Ed Calkins, Steward of Tara's third book in his Ruthless trilogy is submitted and will be my next editing project once "House on Top of the Hill" is complete. Ed

s first book is "Ruthless," his second is "The Fifth," and he is also the author of "Denise Unland's Irish Genealogy."

For books and more information about the series, visit bryonyseries.com.

One Month of Gratitude

Each month, the calendar on the BryonySeries website lists our events and offers ideas for games, crafts, music, activities, science experiments, and  recipes that pick up themes to one or more of our books.

This month, most of the thirty squares are filled with reasons to be thankful and suggestions for expressing that thankfulness.

Because the calendar is a  BryonySeries calendar, each suggestion is linked to the book that inspired it, but that just for context.

Visit the calendar each day for the next idea, as you would use an advent calendar.

Or browse through the dates and pick a couple of activities that work for you.

We hope that just even one suggestion will increase your thankfulness this year and - if you celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday - make your Thanksgiving Day all the more richer.

Visit bryonyseries.com/copy-of-calendar-of-events.

Sue's Diner: Pumpkin Roll

If you'd like to serve a  pumpkin dessert for your Thanksgiving dinner that isn't pie, we have a good one to share with you today.

And we're sharing it early in case you want a couple weeks to practice it, especially for those who've never made a cake rol).

This week's recipe is "Pumpkin Roll," which Sarah submitted for the BryonySeries cookbook Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles from "Bryony."

Here is an excerpt from Bryony that puts the recipe in context:

Steve arrived at the cottage early Thanksgiving morning, and Brian was up to meet him. Together, they babysat the turkey and prepared side dishes. Brian even set the table.

Melissa spent the morning reading and trying not to think about vampires. Her mother finished a story. The smell of food reached Melissa’s nose long before Brian announced dinner. In amazement, Melissa gazed at the festive table Brian had laid: lace tablecloth, her mother’s real silverware, and even a centerpiece of autumn leaves. Just last summer Brian scorned napkins. Gracing the table, in addition to the turkey, was a medley of roasted vegetables that included regular and sweet potatoes, cornbread, baking powder biscuits, and a salad Brian had tossed with a special dressing he made. Yesterday, her mother had prepared trifle and her traditional pumpkin log with cream cheese filling. The table looked so good no one wanted to touch it.

No one, that is, except Brian. “I mean, we made all this food to eat, right?”

Try this recipe on the Sue's Diner page on the BryonySeries website

But try the recipe this week. It will be gone some time next week. A new recipe will take it's place.

All proceeds from Memories in the Kitchen: Bites and Nibbles from "Bryony." are donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties

If you have any troubleshooting questions or comments, email us at bryonyseries@gmail.com.

By the way, Sue's Diner is only real in the BryonySeries world. But didn't Timothy do a great job making the page look like a real menu at a vintage diner?

The Last Fortune Cookie

So two weeks ago, Timothy and Daniel brought Chinese carryout home for all of us for dinner one night.

For whatever reason, the dinner had an extra fortune cookie. And everyone left it for everyone else.

Well, I'm not one to see a fortune cookie go to waste. So I opened it. And...

...I'm so confused by the meaning.

What are your thoughts (opened cookie is on the second photo, please scroll for it).

See what I mean?

What does this message say to you?

Was "setting" supposed to be "settling" instead?

Yet, even then...I'm still not sure. Maybe I should have left it on the counter?

Thoughts? (I did actually eat the cookie).

A Mess Too Messy For Many Words

Well, my third at-home writing retreat was a huge success in that I completed my goal.

I completed the copyedits on the proof copy of "House on Top of the Hill," the third book in the BryonySeries Limbo trilogy.

But at what cost?

Well (again), I set aside all "life" and housework tasks except those of the greatest necessity, even more than has been set aside all year as one emergency after another wedged themselves into our lives.

Let's just say I have my work cut out for me this month.

So my focus for November is gratitude.

Gratitude I completed the book goal in the midst of a confusing year and a stressful week.

\Gratitude for a home that necessitates house work

Gratitude for life to even have "life" tasks.

Of course, give the past three years in our family, any number of "GOTCHAS" can leap out and derails these plans.

I hoping not.

I'm really looking forward to creating something orderly and beautiful once again from all this chaos.

That's a lovely thought for Monday, isn't it?

So my wish for you today is that, whatever needs sprucing up in your life, you somehow find the space to tackle it.

The illustration is by Sue Midlock, and it appears in "Cornell Dyer and the Calcium Deficient Bones."

Happy Monday!

"Recovering Ruthless" by Ed Calkins, Steward of Tara

So Ed Calkins, Steward of Tara, has sent few telegrams this year.

But that's because he's been hard at work writing his third book in the BryonySeries "Ruthless" trilogy.

The title is called "Recovering Ruthless."

And editing this novel is my next project, once I finish the final copyedits for "House on Top of the Hill" (the third book in the BryonySeries Limbo trilogy).

I've dabbled a little with the manuscript as Ed has sent chapters. But I will really dig into hard, heavy edits on Wednesday, when I have a leftover vacation day scheduled.

I don't have back cover summary yet for "Recovering Ruthless" - or an updated Table of Contents.

But I do have the book's cover art and chapter heading art, once again lovingly created by Ed's wife, Nancy Calkins (aka Nala).

If all goes well, "Recovering Ruthless" will be available for sale by Calkins Day 2024 (February 13).

And, yes, Ed already has ideas for a fourth book (not part of the Ruthless trilogy), using new and returning BryonySeries characters.

But Ed (according to Ed) is likely not among those characters. But that is OK.

For the entire trilogy has shifted away from Ed's backstory to other stories. Readers, I think, will see the growth in Ed, both as a reader and as a person.

Happy Saturday!

If you'd like to officially join WriteOn Joliet, we have two tiers of dues and two ways to attend meetings. We also have a marketing arm that's getting longer every year. Check us out at writeonjoliet.com.

I also suggest this book: Little Book of Revision: A Checklist for Fiction Writers. It's exactly as it says. Each page some with one suggestion for revision. The rest of the page is blank, so you can add your own notes. All proceeds benefit WriteOn Joliet.

If you need editing or help with self-publishing, check out dmbaranunland.com.

ARTISTS

If you need an artist for a project, I offer these recommendations.

NEWSLETTERS

Sign up for The Munsonville Times by emailing us at bryonyseries@gmail.com. The newsletter still isn't official yet, so we don't have an actual link on the website - but we are working on it!

SOCIAL MEDIA

Daily updates: I haven't posted anything on Twitter/X (except a daily Bible verse) since September I can no longer schedule posts in advance. I'm not sure yet how to manage the account without that option. But you're welcome to follow me at @Denise_Unland61.

BryonySeries stuff: I used to curated content relating to the BryonySeries on Twitter/X at @BryonySeries and still post assorted related content at facebook.com/BryonySeriesyoutube.com/user/BryonySeries, and themes of each book in the BryonySeries at pinterest.com/bryonyseries.

Again, not sure yet about the direction of the BryonySeries Twitter/X account. Still mulling that over.

And of course, please follow the adventures of Bertrand the Mouse on Instagram at bertrand_bryonyseries.
