Story Round-Up: Features in The Herald-News, Oct. 29 through Nov. 3

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out to WriteOn Joliet's semi-annual open mic night last night at the Book and Bean Cafe in Joliet. To reference one of my favorite Beatles songs, "We're getting better all the time" and that was evident in last night's readings.

If you missed last night's event and weren't able to pick up a flyer with the details of our anthology release party, it will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Book Market on Plainfield Road in Joliet. Hope to see you there!

As I'm already behind on a packed Friday (deadlines, teaching tonight, working weekend), I'll just head right over to the round-up of this week's Herald-News feature stories.

Where to find my non-bylined works? Why, on this blog, of course.

I recently began assembling my brief posts and calendar listings into one convenient file and posting them on Facebook in the evening, so readers can easily choose the ones they want to read.

Now if you don't want to wait that long, you can find the Gotta Do It calendar, as well as the pets, health, faith, and arts and entertainment calendars, under the sections tab on the left hand side of http://www.theherald-news.com/. Click on "features" and the topics drop down.  Gotta Do It runs under "people."

Community news: Again, under the sections tab, under features, and by topic. Updates are posted on these days in print and web and in web on other days as I have the time: Monday (pets), Tuesday (health), Thursday (faith), Friday (arts and entertainment), and Sunday (people).

Daily updates: I do post the briefs and calendars on Twitter during the week, so you're welcome to follow me at @Denise_Unland61.

BryonySeries stuff: I post curated content relating to the BryonySeries at @BryonySeries. And assorted related content at www.facebook.com/BryonySeries. And of course, please follow the adventures of Bertrand the Mouse on Instagram at bertrand_bryonyseries.

Thank you for reading The Herald-News. And for reading this blog. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Joliet woman makes 'happy family rules' easy to use

Peggy Stewart feels the wisdom is simple and so is the delivery. No yelling. No nagging. No counting to three before enacting consequences.

Just placemats, a gentle reminder at meals of what parents expect from children.

It's the type of product Stewart wished she had back in her parenting days.

An Extraordinary Life: Joliet man knew the value of hard work

Born in a boxcar, Joseph Orosco always worked hard and taught his children to do the same.

But Joseph did so in ways he enjoyed and with a goal of benefiting others.

That's the spirit: Joliet area critters don Halloween costumes

When it comes to Halloween, why should humans have all the costume fun?

Apparently these owners – and maybe their pets – agree.

Check out our gallery of dressed-up pets and decide for yourself.

'You never know when life is going to change'

When Derek Hogg of Channahon was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in May 2013, neither he nor Holly Holly knew what it was.

Derek had just turned 30.

'It's not a race, it's a marathon'

Graphic designer. Cyclist. Athlete. Graduate student.

Nick Younglove was all of these – until this past July 18, when a diving accident left him paralyzed
just two weeks before his 27th birthday.

'You can't prepare yourself for something like this'

Terri Lynn Schook, a Joliet Central junior, ran up the school steps one day and passed out.

That was the first indication Terri, pictured with her daugher Jayla Jenning and her mother Diane Schook, had cardiomyopthy or enlargement of her heart, Terri mother's Diane Schook of Joliet said.

Mystery Diner: MyGrain Brewing Company goes for quality experience in downtown Joliet

I wasn't disappointed in the new coffee stout option while Iron and Steel, the double IPA, was my favorite.

Joliet church 'reforming' local connections during reformation anniversary

Rachel Hornsby, chairman of Faith Lutheran's community life committee, said the grants will also help participating churches build relationships with each other.

"We're all small churches trying to do the same things with the same amount of funds, if not less," Hornsby said. "We thought it was a great thing to do for our community: to bless them [the other churches] with our good fortune."
